The undervalued action hero, famously known for his high-octane performances, returns to his element in the initial glimpse of the upcoming action-packed thriller titled “Wings of Dread“. This film seamlessly blends the stunning martial arts sequences reminiscent of one of the top modern action movies ever made, “The Raid”, where our hero, Uwais, takes center stage. With a confined setting within an airplane and the adrenaline-pumping action that “The Raid” is known for, “Wings of Dread” promises to swiftly ascend your list of must-watch action films.
Directed by Pengfei Qin (famous for “Red Cliff”) and Ashton Chen (“Ip Man 2”), with the latter also starring alongside Iko Uwais, plot details for the movie “Wings of Dread” are currently being kept secret. However, from the limited footage available, it appears that “Wings of Dread” will showcase both Uwais and Chen utilizing their unique talents, set against a backdrop of 30,000 feet in the air. You can watch this intriguing preview below.
In a reported collaboration between Iko Uwais and streaming platform iQIYI, the movie titled “Wings of Dread” is set to premiere. This film, available in the US and other regions since 2018, promises an action-packed thrill ride for any genre enthusiast. By packing the masterful martial artists from The Raid into a confined airplane cabin, it raises the stakes significantly – surviving on a plane is much more perilous than anything John Wick, even with his canine companions, has ever encountered.
It’s Baffling, But Hollywood Has Struggled To Find a Place for Iko Uwais
In spite of the massive triumphs of “The Raid” and its sequel, “The Raid 2,” as well as the continued success of director Gareth Evans with the recent Tom Hardy-starring Netflix action film “Havoc,” Iko Uwais continues to be an underestimated action star in contemporary cinema. Despite his appearances in numerous other critically acclaimed action movies, such as “The Night Comes for Us” and “Headshot,” it’s puzzling why Hollywood has yet to fully utilize the talents of this actor and martial artist.
Despite Uwais’s undeniable charm and exceptional martial arts skills, films such as “Snake Eyes”, starring Mark Wahlberg in “Mile 22” and the action sequel “Expend4bles” haven’t provided him with the limelight he deserves. Maybe action enthusiasts are onto something when advocating for him to land a role in Jason Statham’s upcoming movie, “The Beekeeper 2”?
Stepping away from Hollywood temporarily, Uwais has now established his own production company, Uwais Pictures. His goal is to mirror the achievement of low-budget, locally produced films like “The Raid“, “The Raid: Redemption“, and “The Night Comes for Us“. The company aims to integrate combat choreography, action design, and stunt work from the very conception of its projects.
The initial production underway is titled “Timur“, inspired by the true-to-life hostage situation in Mapenduma that occurred in 1996. Notably led by now-Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, this incident will serve as the basis for the movie. Remarkably, it’s Iko Uwais’ directorial debut, and he is also slated to star in this action-packed thriller project. The second film on our list is “Ikatan Darah“, where we follow a former martial arts competitor who finds herself embroiled in a dangerous web of loan sharks, needing to intervene to save her younger brother from online gambling debts that could jeopardize their family’s well-being.
