I’m Fighting for My Life

Katie Thurston is detailing the most troubling experience of her life

As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it this way: After a former contestant on “The Bachelorette” revealed that her breast cancer has advanced to stage four with liver metastasis, she opened up about her current emotional state during her ongoing fight against the disease. She expressed her deepest concern as being the fear of passing away.

Katie shared during her April 17 interview on Emmanuel Acho’s podcast ‘Uncomfortable Conversations’, that she often finds herself asking questions related to the duration of treatment and follow-up scans, such as “How long do I need to take this medication? When is my next check-up to see what’s going on?”. She added that a diagnosis can make one feel like they are constantly looking back over their shoulder due to its weight, despite every day being a precious gift because we are all ultimately dying.

At age 34, she confessed that since marrying Jeff Arcuri earlier this year, the advancing nature of her condition has led others to think she may not have much time left. This perspective has also started influencing her own outlook on life.

She expressed a desire to remain hopeful, but admitted she hasn’t felt this way herself. Her doctor, however, has never given her reason to doubt the situation. The treatment plan and path they’ve chosen have proven beneficial for many others.

Based on her observations of previous patients on the health plan she’s enrolled in, Katie has solid grounds for feeling optimistic about her chances.

She said something unexpected, ‘At least I’ve got five years,’ but deep down, she hopes for much more – perhaps even twenty or more years, considering the progress in medical technology.

However, although Katie, who was a contestant in season 17 of The Bachelorette, has had to grieve over much of the life she had envisioned at this point, she acknowledged that Jeff has been an immense source of support for her.

Katie remarked, “We received the diagnosis within just over ten months since we started our relationship. It’s incredible how strong and healthy our connection has become.

She expressed it as, “It’s almost as if there’s a feeling of reassurance or safety, like ‘All your perceptions about this love were correct.’

Oh my goodness, Katie! It’s you, the incredible woman who bravely shared her breast cancer journey back in February. Can you believe it was all Jeff’s idea to get hitched so swiftly during your health battle? Incredible! They officially became Mr. and Mrs. in March, and I couldn’t help but be touched by how he aced the ultimate relationship test. Simply amazing, Katie!

She shared with US Weekly not long after their wedding, “He’s clearly committed for the long haul.” Every day, he demonstrates his dedication in ways that constantly amaze her.

In the summer of 2024, Katie Thurston became worried when she found a tiny lump in her breast. She initially thought it might be related to her period or exercise-induced muscle soreness. However, since this lump didn’t disappear like she expected, she decided to consult a doctor about it. Despite assuming it would be harmless, her suspicions were proven wrong during the visit.

Initially, Katie’s doctor advised her to consult a specialist for a breast ultrasound due to concerns. Subsequently, she underwent a mammogram. Later, she mentioned in a video uploaded on March 18, 2025, that she was asked to have a biopsy following the mammogram. Only then could they confirm if it was breast cancer, with her appointment being on February 5, and receiving the official diagnosis by February 13, 2025. She vividly recalled the moment she learned about her stage 3 diagnosis.

“It’s the most terrible feeling I’ve ever experienced,” said Katie, who highlighted that there was no history of breast cancer in her family on Good Morning America on March 19, 2025. “You are simply devastated. The shock is immense. As a 34-year-old woman, you’re not prepared.”

She announced her stage 3 diagnosis to her fans on February 15, 2025, via Instagram. “Over the past two weeks, I have experienced a variety of emotions – despair, anger, sadness, denial, and then strength, determination, readiness,” she wrote. “I cried a lot.”

She intended to chronicle her journey to help others, having found solace in the stories of other young women battling breast cancer. “Early on, I looked for stories like mine – young women with breast cancer, invasive ductal carcinoma, mastectomy, pregnancy after breast cancer,” she continued. “Their tales provided comfort. So I aim to offer the same support to others. This is the beginning of sharing my journey, and it’s going to be a long one. Accepting my reality was the hardest step, but I am ready to fight this.

Five months following her engagement to comedian Jeff Arcuri, whom she met through Instagram in 2024’s spring, Katie received a diagnosis. Originally planning a wedding and starting a family, they now find themselves dedicating this year to treatment and recovery instead. As a precaution, they chose to freeze their embryos due to cancer treatment concerns affecting her fertility. This process was documented by both in mid-March 2025, with an update provided at the end of that month.

Katie shared the results of their embryo freezing on Instagram Stories March 31, 2025: out of 17 eggs retrieved, only six were fertilized, three made it to the blastocyst stage, and after genetic testing, they managed to freeze two embryos – one Grade B and one Grade C. This is the reality of IVF.

Katie has also mentioned the possibility of using a surrogate in the future. She emphasizes that Jeff and she had discussed the importance of her health, and when the time comes, surrogacy may be the best option for them. Katie reminds fans to refrain from judging celebrities who pursue surrogacy, as one never knows what personal struggles they might be facing. However, Katie also expressed that she and Jeff are content with the possibility of being a childless couple.

Katie and Jeff decided to take their relationship to the next level by getting married on March 22, 2025 in New York, with Katie having recently moved across the country after months of long-distance dating. She shared the news with Us Weekly, explaining that the intimate ceremony took place in the backyard of their apartment, attended by their parents, officiant friend, and newly adopted dog Charlie.

The decision to get married was particularly significant for the couple, as Jeff wanted to demonstrate his love and commitment amidst the challenges of chemotherapy and its impact on Katie’s health. According to Katie, one evening Jeff said, “I want to show you that I still love you and that I’m here to stay,” and proposed marrying her the very next day.

Although they plan to have a larger wedding in the future, Katie noted that Jeff’s impromptu proposal was a powerful demonstration of his commitment to stand by her through sickness and in health. For Jeff, there was also a practical reason for saying “I do” – he wanted the ability to be with Katie during her hospital stays, and felt that being legally married would give him more authority and support in those situations.

Just days after their blissful union, my beloved idol, Katie, disclosed some startling news: a PET scan had discovered “some areas” in her liver that hinted at cancer, now confirmed as stage 4. In an Instagram video posted March 28, 2025, she courageously admitted, “Stage 4 might sound terrifying, and it is, but given my triple-positive status and the early detection of these relatively small spots on my liver, I am brimming with hope for a favorable outcome.

Following her stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis, Katie shared insights on her treatment strategy. On her Instagram stories at the end of March 2025, she explained that the liver cancer was a metastasis from her breast cancer, implying that her primary concern would be treating the breast cancer. The initial plan involved six rounds of chemotherapy.

However, just before Katie was due to commence this treatment, she received new information. On April 4, 2025, she wrote on Instagram that she had prepared for her chemo session but was informed that her pathology results for the liver, breast, and lymph nodes were HER2 Negative, despite initial tests at Kaiser indicating they were HER2+. This sudden change led to a discussion with her doctor about additional testing and the implications for her revised treatment plan. As a result, Katie mentioned that it seemed chemotherapy was no longer an option.

Though she should be happy about this development, Katie has received three updated diagnoses in just two months, leaving her feeling uncertain. She emphasized that seeking multiple opinions and thorough testing had been crucial during her early cancer journey.

In the ongoing battle against cancer, Katie takes each day as it comes. On March 31, 2025, she penned on her Boobie Broadcast channel, “Sometimes life feels like an unexpected twist, but I can’t deny this is my journey now.” The phrase ‘living like you’re dying’ may sound simple, but it’s proving more challenging to practice, especially when one is living it. We all are moving closer to our final destination each day, not in a gloomy sense, but as an unavoidable part of life. So whether I have cancer or not, I am grateful for the gift of today. There are days when I feel low, but I strive to make the most of my time, regardless of my health status. Katie is also urging her followers with a valuable piece of advice: “Don’t delay, take action. Get regular check-ups.” She expressed this sentiment on Good Morning America.
