‘I’m honestly scared to go to sleep’: Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s hardcore mode is finally here for anyone who wants a ‘tougher slice of medieval life’

In the latest update, version 1.2.4, for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, a few glitches have been addressed – such as adjusting herb shop prices and offering Henry a fresh bald hairstyle. However, it’s not these minor features that are truly exciting – what really sets this patch apart is the addition of a challenging new game mode, which adds an extra layer to the overall experience.

Hardcore mode is here, and it’s not for the faint of heart,” the patch notes say. “You won’t see your location on the map. You won’t fast travel. You won’t get surrendering enemies, visual cues in combat, or even basic directions, unless you earn them.”

In addition to the standard gameplay, you can choose some long-term disadvantages at the start of your adventure in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. These choices will significantly impact your experience as there’s no easy route to success.

The blog post announces that “Hardcore mode” is now available in Bohemia. This new gaming experience promises to significantly challenge players who are willing to confront a more demanding aspect of medieval existence within Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.

During your gameplay, you’ll need to customize your own adventure by picking at least three long-lasting disadvantages from the start. For instance, one option is the Heavy-Footed trait, which amplifies the noise you make while moving and hastens the wear of your shoes. Another choice could be Sweaty, which makes you smellier as you traverse the world, or Numbskull, which decreases your rate of experience gain.

Karel Kolmann, lead game designer at Warhorse Studios, discusses how they’ve taken the difficulty level a step higher for the hardcore mode in this new game compared to the same mode in the first game: “In the initial game, we limited features like showing your location on the map and providing a compass. However, for this edition, we’ve introduced an additional layer of challenge. Now, players can interact with various NPCs to ask about their location in the world, which adds a sense of realism and engagement. You might even come across travelers on the road and seek their guidance.

The “Shy Feature” prevents access to map aids. Initially, it may not seem problematic, but some gamers have noted that when used alongside the “Somnambulist Feature,” which causes sleepwalking, it can lead to inconvenience as you might fall asleep and wake up in an unpredicted location.

It’s truly inconvenient when you unexpectedly find yourself somewhere unfamiliar, especially when there’s something important to do nearby upon waking up. Bashful helps alleviate this issue by providing navigation guidance, eliminating the need for asking directions.

At this moment, I’m genuinely anxious about falling asleep because it occurs so frequently. Moreover, it doesn’t seem to increase the challenge, only causing inconvenience. If it happened occasionally, it might be amusing, but its frequency has me both anticipating and dreading it, which seems absurd to me.

Among other benefits available to you, one option is the “Punchable Face Perk,” which escalates the hostility of travelers you encounter. This might lead to a punch to your lights in the midst of a dusty road somewhere, but you can rest assured that you’ll wake up in the same location.
