Millie Bobby Brown is no stranger to shutting down criticism.
For instance, the actress from “Stranger Things” has lately responded to criticism about her mixed American and British accent.
It’s no wonder Millie can easily change accents since her spouse, Jake Bongiovi (the son of Jon Bon Jovi), is an American-born individual.
Millie clarified on the SmartLess podcast with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett on March 10th that for a brief period, something significant occurred regarding her accent. She humorously dubbed it the “accent gate” because it was incredibly frustrating. At one point, everyone seemed to be discussing her accent, expressing concerns about it. However, she playfully reminded them, “Friends, I’m married to an American.
In her explanation, she mentioned that switching between speaking with her husband Jake (whom she married in May after three years together) and his family in the U.S., and returning to her native accent, has now become a natural habit for her.
Whenever I’m with his relatives, I instinctively switch to a North American accent,” the young man explained. “However, I recently visited England, and as soon as I heard my parents’ voices, I immediately reverted back.
Furthermore, Millie pointed out that assuming different dialects for her acting parts has influenced her everyday speech. In her words, “If you want me to portray these characters, but you don’t want me to transform into them, then I must be hearing and speaking as they would. It’s all part of the process.
Similarly, Millie has expressed this opinion previously, pointing out that her upbringing in Hollywood significantly influenced her speaking style.
In her TikTok posted in March 2024, she declared, “I am a performer. Raised under public scrutiny, in the heart of America, I am accustomed to adapting. When I step onto set, I act, and I strive to imitate people.
Millie has also recently spoken out against negativity online regarding her appearance.
In a video posted on Instagram on March 3rd, the actress from Electric Slate expressed a desire to discuss an issue she believes impacts more than just herself. This topic, she stated, has a significant influence on every young woman who experiences life under the limelight and public gaze.
She went on to say, “I was brought up under public scrutiny, and it’s puzzling to me why people can’t seem to mature alongside me. Instead, they expect me to remain as I was in the early seasons of ‘Stranger Things.’ Since I don’t, I find myself being criticized.
In an effort to underscore her argument, Millie highlighted particular articles that insinuated she appeared older than her actual age.
She expressed that what’s happening here isn’t about journalism; it’s more like harassment or bullying. It’s troubling to see mature writers focusing on analyzing my physical appearance, personal decisions, and it becomes even more disconcerting when some of these articles are written by women.

Since Millie Bobby Brown first came into the limelight at age 12 with her debut in “Stranger Things” in 2016, she has faced growing criticism about her appearance as she transitions into adulthood. Some fans have commented that she looks and behaves older than her actual age. In response to this scrutiny, Millie addressed the issue in an Instagram video on March 3, stating: “I grew up in front of the world, but people can’t seem to grow with me. Instead, they expect me to stay the same as I was in ‘Stranger Things’ season one. But because I don’t, I am now being targeted.” She also criticized individuals who tear down celebrities for attention-seeking purposes. Millie declared: “I refuse to make myself smaller to meet unrealistic expectations. I will not be shamed for how I look, dress, or present myself.” She concluded by urging people to do better, not just for her sake, but for the benefit of every young girl who deserves to mature without fear of being judged and criticized.
After her appearance at the premiere of “The Electric State” on February 24, criticism poured onto Millie’s social media platforms regarding her appearance, with comments such as “I had to double-check if she turned 21 recently or 40” and “She looks older than ever!”. In response to this criticism, an article titled “No One Cares How Old You Think Millie Bobby Brown Looks” was published by British Vogue. Notably, Millie herself acknowledged the article on her Instagram Story on February 27, saying “Thank you.
Despite some critics commenting that Millie looked older than she is in a selfie posted on Dec. 29, the actress swiftly responded. On her January 1 Instagram Story, she wrote, “Women age!”, adding, “Not sorry about it 🙂
In a March 2024 interview, TikToker Max Balegde inquired about comments from fans regarding whether Millie Bobby Brown was losing her British accent. “Let me address that briefly,” Millie replied. “I’m an actress. I grew up under public scrutiny. I spent my childhood in America. On set, I act and adapt to fit the role. Consequently, I try to mimic people.”
Although she acknowledged her speech sounds more American in various contexts, such as with her fiancé Jake Bongiovi or on a late-night talk show like Jimmy Fallon’s, she couldn’t help that her British accent was stronger when she was in England. “I don’t do it deliberately,” she added. “I apologize if I offend you. But, listen, I’m doing my best. I’m trying my hardest!
Millie observed a shift in people’s behavior towards her once she reached the age of 18 in 2022. On the podcast “The Guilty Feminist” in April, she discussed the challenges of growing up in public view as a young adult. She explained that it was both disgusting and accurate to say that she has had to deal with being sexualized due to her fame, a struggle she has faced for a long time.
She recalled an instance when she wore a fluffy dress to a red carpet event at the age of 16 and faced criticism for trying to appear older with its low cut. “Is this really what we’re focusing on?” she questioned. Instead, she believes the conversation should revolve around the talented individuals present at the awards show and the people they represent.
At that time, she made a decision to stop sharing personal content on her social media, instead choosing to use her platform to inspire others. “You won’t see my private life,” she explained. “What you’ll see are the things I choose to share with the world. I hope if there’s a 12-year-old who lies about their age to create an account on social media, they won’t be exposed to the harmful world that exists online.”
