I’m a passionate movie buff and Swimming Hall of Famer, having represented my country at the Olympic Games back in 2012. I’ve been fortunate enough to have experienced the rush of competition firsthand, but now, as a commentator, it’s a different kind of thrill. I’m not envious of those in the pool; instead, I share their anxiety and excitement.

Is it difficult watching and commentating on swimming rather than competing?

I’ve enjoyed my experience in that sport and have no regrets. I don’t yearn to be in the crowd watching now, but I cannot help but feel anxious for the athletes as I recall the pressures and challenges of competition.

What can we expect from Paris 2024?

If GB’s Adam Peaty fails to win a medal at the competition, it would come as a shock to everyone. However, upsets can happen and that element of surprise is what makes the event exciting for me.

How do you prepare for your pundit role?

My former coach, Bill Furniss, currently holds the position of head coach for British Swimming in GB. I plan on talking to him and other coaches for heartwarming anecdotes about the athletes’ personal experiences. I also make it a point to prepare all my outfits well in advance to ensure I feel confident and comfortable. While it may seem trivial, I believe this small detail contributes significantly to my sense of readiness.

You retired in 2013 at the age of 23. Do you still swim every day?

As a passionate cinema-goer, I long for the chance to visit the theater every Sunday morning. I leisurely stroll there, covering a distance of 2 kilometers at a relaxed pace. Instead of rushing or focusing on my phone, I cherish this moment as an opportunity to unwind and disconnect. It’s not about the competition or the race for me; it’s the love of the experience itself that draws me in.

Have you taught your children to swim?

At eight, my child confidently swims on his own. Three, however, clings to armbands with a stubborn refusal to heed my words. I urge him, “Sweetie, your swimming instructor and I have given you the very same instructions!”

You’re passionate that kids must learn to swim…

Affirmative. In a swimming pool, the environment is warm and welcoming. You’re dressed appropriately for swimming, have your goggles on, and can either stand or reach a wall for support. Contrastingly, falling into a river or lake presents a different scenario with potential danger and inappropriate clothing. Access to pools is crucial, as many have unfortunately closed down in the UK due to the ongoing pandemic.

Should the government step in?

Building council swimming facilities at a cost of £25 million each is not the way forward for affordable swimming. Councils cannot bear such expenses. Instead, we need to explore innovative options for swimming venues nationwide. This could include hotel pools, gym pools, or even school pools.

What wider impact does lack of access to pools have?

The Olympics will be influenced by this situation, and our team is currently in a powerful position, likely bringing home numerous medals from Paris. However, due to closed swimming pools, we might see a decrease in our medal count starting possibly after the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
