In simpler terms, Brazil experienced a violent military rule that began in 1964 and lasted until 1985. During this period, numerous citizens mysteriously vanished without a trace. The concept of remaking Back to the Future featuring Meghan Markle might seem appealing, but the film “I’m Still Here” is based on a true story from the 1970s. It follows Eunice Paiva (Fernanda Torres), wife of Rubens (Selton Mello), an architect and former congressman who disappeared. After living in exile for six years following the Brazilian military coup, Rubens has returned, and the family now resides near the picturesque Leblon beach with their five children.
The constant presence of military trucks and aircraft serves as a chilling reminder that a dictatorship looms, casting a shadow over what should be a beautiful paradise. Ruben, in secret, makes clandestine phone calls and exchanges packages, which has led to his arrest by the police, with European ambassadors also being detained. This suspicious activity concerns Vera (played by Valentina Herszage), who is sent to university in Lindon for her safety. Eunice, aware of her husband’s potentially dangerous activities, focuses on caring for their children and maintaining the illusion of a harmonious family life, which is beautifully portrayed through photographs and home movies. However, the film takes a dark turn when army officials arrive at their house to interrogate Ruben, never to be seen again.
I’m Still Here” delves into Eunice’s tumultuous journey, as she grapples with uncovering the truth about her husband and where he is. This quest dominates Eunice’s life for the next 25 years. Initially, she tells the children that their father is traveling, but as they mature, they start to suspect something amiss regarding their father’s disappearance. Fernanda Torres delivers a compelling portrayal of Eunice, who fights to maintain composure for her kids while also striving to overcome the barriers set by authorities in her quest for answers.
The movie, following the book by Rubens & Marcelo’s son Marcelo, leads us to the year 1996 where we discover the location of their fathers. Later, it takes us to a heartfelt and emotional family reunion in 2014, with Eunice, now old and frail, still exhibiting her characteristic defiance and positivity towards her loved ones.
Under the direction of Walter Salles, this film marks his return to feature-length productions since 2012. Consistent with his artistic motif, it portrays individuals navigating oppressive situations while preserving their humanity. Reminiscent of his acclaimed works such as ‘Central Station’ and ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’, ‘I’m Still Here‘ holds its ground. Despite a somber narrative, the movie maintains an optimistic tone by the end.
