I’m Up For It

[Caution: This article reveals plot details for Sinners.] “Chicago is just Mississippi with skyscrapers instead of plantations,” Smokestack Twins Smoke and Stack (Michael B. Jordan) say to their cousin, Sammie (Miles Caton), upon returning to their hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi. We find out that the brothers, Elijah and Elias, were both soldiers and gangsters who traveled together: from the battlefields of World War I in Germany to the criminal underworld of Chicago.

In a different setting, the twins had been employed by Al Capone and amassed their wealth by extorting the mafia. This ill-gotten money was then used to establish their own juke joint in the Mississippi Delta. At one point, Smoke mentions, “We’re done with Chicago.” To this, Smoke’s wife Annie (Wunmi Mosaku) replies, “Chicago has discarded you two.

Are the twins done with their time in Chicago, or might there be a prequel to the Sinners series focusing on Smoke and Stack’s involvement with the mob in the Windy City? Jordan expressed to Total Film that he would be open to such a project, stating, “I’d be up for it. I’m not saying [director Ryan Coogler] definitely would, but I’m just saying, I would be open to it. He ultimately makes the decisions.

In a playful manner, Coogler said, “I’m not in charge,” referring to his wife and co-producer Zinzi Coogler. “In fact, for me, the best movies make it feel like a story already took place, and another one is about to unfold. So, that’s the highest praise someone can give.”

“It means that you care about the characters, wanting to know their past and future,” Jordan explained.

While Coogler generally avoided discussing a prequel for Sinners, he was clearer in shutting down conversations about a Sinners sequel. The movie concludes, as a spoiler alert, with Stack getting bitten and transformed into an immortal vampire by Mary (Hailee Steinfeld), and Smoke meeting his end during a gunfight with Klansmen outside the twins’ juke joint.

The director of “Creed” and “Black Panther” shared with EBONY that he rarely considers the possibility of a “Sinners 2.” He explained that after focusing on series films for some time, he desired to step away from that pattern.

Coogler explained, “I was excited to work on a movie that felt fresh and meaningful to me, and I aimed to offer something distinctive and exceptional to the audience. I wanted the film to be like a complete meal: the appetizers, main course, and dessert, I wanted it all. I desired it to be a comprehensive and polished piece. This is how I described my vision for it. This was always my goal.

The movie titled “Sinners” dominated the box office consecutively for two weeks, earning an additional $45 million during its latest run. This brings its total earnings to $161.6 million worldwide since its debut on April 18.
