Despite concerns over the PS5’s performance, sales have been brisker in the U.S., with units moving quicker than the PS4 at a greater cost. Moreover, by the year 2024, it had significantly widened its lead over its previous generation counterpart.
According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella’s report, by the end of December 2024, the PS5 has seen a 7% higher total sales figure compared to where the PS4 stood at the same point after its launch. As of December 2023, this difference was 6%, which means that over the past year, the new-generation system has strengthened its edge in sales.
It’s important to mention that the price of the PS5 is higher than what the PS4 was at the same stage in its lifetime. Additionally, the supply of the next-generation console has been severely limited for a long period following its debut.
By comparison, as of December 2024 in the U.S., the Xbox Series X|S lagged behind the Xbox One – which was already seen as a letdown – by 18%. This gap was only 13% through December 2023, indicating that Microsoft’s latest console may be losing its initial appeal rather quickly.
In Japan, the PS5 is holding its own alongside the PS4, but it’s encountering challenges in keeping up in price-conscious Europe. It will be intriguing to observe how Sony plans to tackle this issue by 2025.
The sales of PS5 are comparable to those of PS4 in Japan, but in Europe, where cost is a significant factor, it’s finding it hard to keep up the pace. It will be exciting to see what strategies Sony plans to employ to overcome this challenge by 2025.
