Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Doesn’t “Encourage Gunplay,” Director Says

As a gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit, it’s refreshing to see a developer like MachineGames stepping out of their comfort zone and delivering something truly unique. After years of first-person shooters, they’re finally giving us an Indiana Jones game that feels authentic.

MachineGames has been predominantly recognized for its first-person shooter games due to its contributions to the Wolfenstein series. However, it’s essential to note that their upcoming game, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, will deviate from this pattern, as it won’t be a first-person shooter, despite featuring guns in gameplay.

In a recent chat with Edge magazine (as reported by GamesRadar), creative director Axel Torvenius shared insights, stating that the forthcoming action-adventure game doesn’t primarily promote shooting, instead emphasizing the importance of employing one’s intelligence and whip in navigating through it.

Torvenius stated, “We discourage resorting to gunplay. A more preferred approach is employing intelligence and resourcefulness instead.

As a gamer, I’d express it like this: “I can’t help but think about Indiana Jones. If they were to make a game centered around shooting, it just wouldn’t feel right for the character. What sets The Great Circle apart is its focus on ramping up the danger when using a gun – making every shot count.

He noted that Indy lacks supernatural abilities and it’s usually apparent how challenging combat is for him,” he said. “Ultimately, he’s a teacher and somewhat accident-prone archaeologist. He finds himself in bizarre predicaments frequently due to his intense passion, which often places him against adversaries and dangerous situations.

To maintain authenticity with his character, he won’t be seen perpetually attacking enemy camps. Instead, the developers at MachineGames aim to highlight the perilous nature of combat. Our objective is to convey that engaging in a firefight puts you at great risk of being hit. Similarly, shooting at enemies can prove hazardous since they possess an alarm system and are likely to reinforce their ranks.

Game director Jerk Gustafsson explained further that while the game will feature numerous firearms, due to their “boisterous and hazardous” nature, players will be incentivized to explore multiple strategies – such as employing guns in close combat.

In this game, there are many guns available, but you opt not to employ them because they’re too noisy and risky, he explained. Instead, you can grab a gun and alter it so that it functions as a close combat weapon. This method of using a gun aligns perfectly with the character of Indiana Jones.

MachineGames, known for their first-person shooter games in the past, aims to offer a distinct gaming experience with their upcoming title. This new game promises to be more in line with the story it represents, and it will feature open areas, sim-style gameplay elements, and social stealth mechanics. Learn more about this here.

The action-adventure game titled “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” is set to release on December 9 for both Xbox Series X/S and PC systems. The PlayStation 5 version will follow suit in the spring of 2025.
