As a long-time fan of Indiana Jones, the release of Bethesda and MachineGames’ Indiana Jones and the Great Circle feels like a dream come true! I’ve been on this adventure since the first movie hit theaters back in 1981, and this game seems to capture the spirit of Indy perfectly.
It appears that Bethesda and MachineGames’ “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” is poised to bring 2024 to a thrilling close. Today, early access for Premium and Deluxe Edition owners became available, and as reviews start pouring in on Metacritic, anticipation grows. ComicBook’s review gave the game a score of 4 out of 5, praising it as “a remarkably faithful and meticulous adaptation of the Indiana Jones character that will be tough to beat if this franchise is ever taken up by another studio.” As more reviews come in, there’s a growing consensus that this game ranks among the best Indiana Jones titles ever created.
At the moment, the Metacritic critic average for the game “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” stands at 86/100 after 43 reviews. The PC version of this game scores a bit higher with 87/100. Currently, it holds the highest rating among Xbox exclusives released this year, surpassing “Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II” which is at 81/100. However, it doesn’t currently top the all-time list of highest rated Xbox exclusives. The titles “Forza Horizon 5“, “Microsoft Flight Simulator“, and “Halo Infinite” each hold scores of 92/100, 90/100, and 87/100 respectively.
Compared to other games produced by MachineGames, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle scored slightly lower than Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, which received an 87 out of 100. However, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle surpassed their other titles, such as Wolfenstein: The New Order with a score of 79/100, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood at 76/100, and Wolfenstein: Youngblood, which was their lowest-rated game, scoring 69/100.
As far as Indiana Jones games go, The Great Circle is considered the top-rated title in the franchise’s history. Prior to its launch, LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure and Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine held the highest rankings with scores of 77/100 and 75/100 each. On the other hand, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings from 2009 was the lowest-rated game in the series, scoring a 55/100. The Great Circle significantly surpasses this low mark.
At the moment, “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” shares the top spot with “Raiders of the Lost Ark” as the highest-rated Indiana Jones productions according to Metacritic ratings. This marks a refreshing change from a series of less impressive releases, with “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” and “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” receiving scores of 65/100 and 58/100 respectively.
The majority of reviews commend the game’s narrative and commitment to the series, particularly highlighting that The Great Circle is an outstanding tribute to the renowned archaeologist and his journeys in terms of size, mood, and wit. However, some constructive criticism was given concerning performance problems and visual discrepancies, primarily observed on the Xbox Series X|S version. With time, these technical issues are expected to be addressed and rectified.
It’s important to note that this score can change over time as more reviews are published. The game fully launches on December 9th, meaning user reviews will also pour in and that score will become public. As these early reviews appear to indicate, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle appears to be one adventure you would be remiss in missing out on.
