The highly anticipated 2024 exclusive from Microsoft, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, is coming to PlayStation on April 17th. This adventure, praised as one of the best Indiana Jones experiences in years, combines exploration with stunning cinematics for PS5 players. Here are some important facts about the PS5 version of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle you should know before buying it.
Additional Updates and Fixes
On the PS5 version, several exciting new features have been introduced that are accessible across all platforms. One of the most significant changes is the enhancement of whips with two fresh abilities: ‘Open Season’ and ‘Sleight of Hand’. The former creates a debuff on enemies, making them more vulnerable to attacks, while the latter smartly disarms opponents, sending their weapon directly into Indy’s hands. Since its launch in December, the game has received three updates aimed at addressing an extensive list of bugs and problems, ensuring that new PS5 players enjoy a smooth and bug-free gaming experience.
DualSense Functionality
One distinctive feature setting the PS5 apart from other gaming consoles is the realistic tactile sensation provided by its DualSense controller. In their upcoming port, Machine Games aims to fully utilize this unique aspect. While specifics have yet to be disclosed, the PlayStation Store page confirms that the DualSense’s vibration effect and trigger function will be supported. Given other games compatible with DualSense, we can anticipate haptic feedback adjusting according to terrain and varying resistance levels in the triggers when firing different weapons or setting up a well-aimed grenade.
PS5 Pro Enhancements
If you’re an Indiana Jones fan and lucky enough to own a PS5 Pro, you’ll be thrilled because many of the stunning visual upgrades usually reserved for high-end PCs can now be experienced on this advanced Sony console. Although Bethesda hasn’t disclosed exact details about the PS5 Pro enhancements for this Indy adventure, we do know from the PS Store that it carries the ‘enhanced for PS5 Pro’ label. This suggests that features such as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), advanced ray tracing, and possibly a 120 FPS mode may be included.
PS5 Editions
Three versions of the game “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” are available on PS5. The standard version costs $69.99 and contains just the game. For $99.99, you can get the Premium Edition which offers access to the upcoming DLC ‘The Order of Giants’, a new Temple of Doom outfit, a digital artbook, and early access play for PS5 owners. But if you’re looking for something more exclusive, there’s also a Collector’s Bundle priced at $189.99. This bundle comes with some physical items like an 11-inch globe with a hidden storage compartment, a leather-bound adventure journal, and all the contents of the Premium Edition.
Pre-order Bonuses
No matter which edition you choose, every PS5 version that’s pre-ordered comes with an exclusive Traveling Suit outfit for Indiana Jones and a whip as accessories. These items are purely cosmetic in nature and they might not be available for purchase later through the store for those who didn’t pre-order.
Release Date and Early Access Times
Time is running out fast! I really don’t want to miss the opportunity to pre-order this game, as it drops on the 17th of April, which happens to be a Thursday. The good news is that if you go for the Premium Edition, you’ll get early access starting from the 15th of April! Can’t wait!
Is a Microsoft Account Needed to Play?
As a gamer, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that playing Indy and the Great Circle on PS5 won’t require a Microsoft account. However, given the trend with Xbox exclusive games like Forza Horizon 5, it seems likely. Yet, it’s important to note that not all of Microsoft’s single-player games have required a sign-in – take Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment for instance, they didn’t need one. So, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if this specific single-player adventure falls under the same category.
Disc Versions Require Internet Download
It’s unfortunate to note that physical copies of the game need an internet connection for downloading the game and its content in order to play it. Although the high-end Collector Bundle from Bethesda includes a disc, it specifies in the fine print that an internet connection is necessary for playing the game and accessing additional content.
Voice Talent
Speaking of the game, it’s got plenty of appealing elements. For any Indiana Jones-themed project to thrive, it needs exceptional voice acting, and this game delivers on that front remarkably. Troy Baker managed to convince us with his interpretation of Indy’s voice. It’s both charismatic and personalized while still retaining that familiar Harrison Ford essence. The female character, Gina Lambardi, who joins Indy in unraveling the mystery of the Great Circle, is convincingly portrayed by Alessandra Mastronardi. However, it’s the main antagonist, Emmerich Voss, who steals the show with his performance. Actor Marios Gavrilis does an outstanding job of embodying Voss’s chilling and unhinged character.
Exploration
One unique feature that sets this game apart from others in its genre is the first-person viewpoint, which intensifies the player’s immersion, making for more detailed exploration and problem-solving. The protagonist, Indy, uses a camera and journal to record hints and notes as he navigates the game’s varied settings. The in-game UI, showing Indy peering at his map or journal, significantly enhances the feeling of stepping into his shoes as an explorer. Moreover, the game is filled with collectibles cleverly hidden in hard-to-find spots, providing players a strong incentive to veer from the main path.
Wide Environments
The extensive exploration opportunities in this game are primarily responsible for its focus on exploration. Wandering through expansive landscapes provides a sense of fulfillment due to all the open space available. However, it’s important to note that while the storyline follows a linear progression, there is a significant amount of slower-paced exploration within these vast areas. The game features numerous key moments and cinematics, but also offers ample chances for leisurely exploration.
Stealth
The game’s deliberate tempo is particularly evident in its stealth mechanics, where a significant portion of the battle strategy involves creeping up on enemies for a silent takedown. Navigating past patrols and maneuvering around guarded areas plays a crucial role in this Indiana Jones-style adventure, and it’s executed well due to thoughtful level design and user-friendly controls.
Combat
In the game “The Great Circle“, there’s intense hand-to-hand fighting, but it deviates from the usual fast-paced shooting style of Machine Games games. Instead, combat in this game centers around improvised melee weapons, Indy’s whip, and a restricted supply of small firearms. The whip, a well-known tool, is used effectively for stunning and disarming opponents in this game.
Oodles of Melee Weapons
In this game, ammunition is hard to come by, so you frequently end up using various environmental objects as melee weapons instead. From oversized flyswatters to pipes and even pots and pans, there’s a surprising variety of items used for close combat. However, you’ll always have your fists at the ready, making it possible to engage in intense brawls. The game focuses heavily on hand-to-hand combat, and while it can get messy, there’s an undeniable thrill in knocking out Nazis with your bare knuckles.
Game Length
The game’s diverse gameplay is beneficial since it typically lasts around 25 hours. According to Howlongtobeat, a comprehensive playthrough can extend up to 38 hours, while a quick storyline run takes approximately 15 hours. As a result, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle stands out as one of Machine Games’ longer titles, offering PS5 players with an Indiana Jones fix ample content to delve into and discover.
