As a long-time fan of Indiana Jones and an avid gamer, I must say that I am both excited and apprehensive about Troy Baker stepping into the iconic role made famous by Harrison Ford. On one hand, Baker has proven himself to be one of the most versatile voice actors in the industry, lending his talent to a wide array of beloved characters such as Joel Miller in The Last of Us, Sam Drake in Uncharted, and even Batman in LEGO Dimensions. However, Indiana Jones is not just any character; he’s a symbol of adventure, mystery, and heroism that has been synonymous with Ford for decades.
In an upcoming release of “Indiana Jones: The Great Circle” for Xbox and PC this year, the game will showcase Troy Baker’s vocal skills. Initially, the executive producer Todd Howard hadn’t planned to cast Baker as the main character, but in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, he admitted that he had initially turned down Baker for the role. Over time, Baker has grown popular and recognizable among players. Considering this and the game’s setting, Howard opted to consider many potential candidates instead of selecting someone who resembles a familiar face to the audience.
Due to extensive tryouts, Bethesda eventually determined that Baker was the ideal candidate for Indiana Jones. In a subsequent video conference, Howard explained to Baker the thought process behind their choice.
Howard informed Baker that during a blind test, people consistently picked you as their preference,” or simply, “In a blind test, people favored you each time, according to Howard.
Baker has become one of the video game industry’s biggest voice actors, having voiced characters like Joel Miller in The Last of Us, Sam Drake in the Uncharted games, and Batman in LEGO Dimensions. The actor’s versatility has made him an industry staple, but that can be a double-edged sword; given how familiar gamers have become with Baker’s work, it’s not surprising that Howard might have had reservations about casting the actor. Indiana Jones isn’t a character like Batman, where there have been countless actors playing the role across decades; this is a role that has been associated almost exclusively with one prolific person. There’s a lot of pressure to get it right, and in addition to the voice, there’s also the motion capture aspects. Fans can be assured that this is something that Baker took very seriously.
I’d be more convincing if I could demonstrate my skills,” Baker told Rolling Stone. “If you don’t trust me while I’m merely standing there with the whip, you might doubt even more when you see me actually using it to crack it.

As a gamer eagerly awaiting the release of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, I’ve had a sneak peek at Harrison Ford’s successor, Madison Baker. From what I’ve seen so far, he’s nailed Ford’s distinctive voice and charisma. We’ll get to hear him in action soon, as the game drops on December 9th. It’s no small feat stepping into a role that’s been defined by one actor for so long, but I’m optimistic that Baker will rise to the challenge.
