Indiana Jones was the second best-selling game in the US its debut week, behind another Xbox property

As someone who has been following the gaming industry for decades and has witnessed the rise and fall of many beloved franchises, I must say that the debut of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has left me pleasantly surprised. After the disappointing reboot of the Tomb Raider series, it’s refreshing to see a classic franchise being treated with the respect it deserves.

For one of the year’s final major games, we have some intriguing preliminary data. Normally, I eagerly anticipate monthly data releases from Mat Piscatella, the executive director and analyst at Circana. Occasionally, he offers additional weekly insights into the U.S. video game sales trends, which I always appreciate.

Last Monday, we learned that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle by Bethesda Softworks and MachineGames ranked as the second highest-earning game during its initial week, ending on December 14, 2024. However, Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 held onto the top spot, continuing its reign as a successful first-party Xbox release that debuted a few months prior to Indiana Jones. Since its launch, Black Ops 6 has consistently outperformed other games in sales, taking the lead as the best-selling game for both October and November in the U.S.

I use the term “full debut week” specifically because it begins on December 9, which marks the release of both the standard edition and Xbox Game Pass version of Indiana Jones. Those who bought the Premium Edition or the Premium Upgrade (for Game Pass subscribers) could start playing from December 6. These sales aren’t included in the next week’s figures, making the total sales more impressive. This is particularly noteworthy because players who are only accessing the game through Xbox Game Pass don’t show up on the dollar sales charts.

Additionally, Piscatella posted separately that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle ranked as the third most frequently played game on Xbox Series X|S systems during that particular week, according to Circula’s data which monitors total playtime instead of simultaneous users.

Room for one more outing in the future?

As a tech enthusiast, it’s clear that the initial sales of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle are promising, though we’ll have a clearer understanding of its success as time unfolds. Regardless, I’m thrilled to see such a strong start, and I eagerly anticipate positive word-of-mouth spreading, leading to increased player count and sales. Who doesn’t want a dose of classic fun and some good old Nazi-punching in their lives?

Instead of allowing Quake and Wolfenstein to fade away, I’m eagerly hoping that the talented team at MachineGames will give us another Indiana Jones game as a testament to their skill in bringing cinematic properties to life. Perhaps this new adventure could take place immediately following the events of The Last Crusade?

If you need more convincing on picking this game up, read my review of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, where I wrote that “From the manner in which every line is delivered and scene is shot to the smirk on Indy’s face when solving a puzzle, it’s clear that everyone at MachineGames just gets what makes Indiana Jones so special. This is a game that can sit next to the original trilogy with pride.”

Currently, you can play Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on the Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, or with your Xbox Game Pass Ultimate/PC Game Pass subscription. The PlayStation 5 edition of the game is planned for release sometime in the spring of 2025.
