As a passionate gamer, I was utterly blown away when The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered unexpectedly swooped in and stole the show on April 22nd. Yet, it was a tough blow for the indie devs who had planned their grand launch on the same day, leaving them scrambling to regroup.
Jonas Antonsson, one of the founders at independent publisher Raw Fury, recently shared his thoughts on Twitter regarding how the release of major “shadow-drops” from games such as The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered can lead to other titles launching simultaneously becoming overlooked or “buried.
As a young gamer, I was captivated by the magic and adventure of Oblivion, and that fascination has never faded. Now, as an older player, I’m genuinely thrilled to witness this classic game getting a fresh start and being introduced to a new wave of gamers.
For independent developers and publishers, a significant issue with these large-scale sudden releases (often called shadow drops) is that they tend to get lost in the shuffle. We don’t have the financial resources or marketing power to compete head-on, so our strategies are more deliberate and thoughtful. For example, we carefully time our launches, taking into account other games being released at the same time, to increase our chances of attracting attention.
Afterward, Antonsson highlighted Red Soul Games’ Post Trauma, a title that Raw Fury released on April 22. It’s a puzzle-horror game influenced by PS2 era masterpieces, where you explore settings, confront dangers, and encounter other lost souls in the dark recesses of Gloom.
Antonsson expressed fondness for the game that was recently released, but he also empathized with our team and particularly the developer we’ve collaborated with extensively over the years – who has put an immense amount of passion and dedication into his creation.
On April 22, Raw Fury playfully tweeted: “It’s so fortunate that Post Trauma was the standout release of the day, and nothing else noteworthy occurred!
According to Bethesda and Microsoft’s perspective, the unexpected release of Oblivion Remastered has been a major triumph. The game garnered significant attention upon its launch on Steam, and it’s been the talk of the town online as players rejoice over the return of quirky character expressions, old glitches, and memes.
Despite Microsoft vigorously promoting other games, even they struggle against the momentum of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Remastered, also known as Oblivion Remastered. This week, Kepler Interactive, the publisher of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, admitted to the ‘Barbenheimer’ effect – releasing during the same week as Oblivion Remastered. Both games debuted simultaneously on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
Regarding Raw Fury, when they announced the release date for Post Trauma, they likely weren’t aware that Oblivion Remastered would be capturing everyone’s attention instead. It might simply turn out to be one of those unforeseen occurrences.
