Industrious developer fits Microsoft's big Windows 11 2024 update to 'DVD-size' with extra storage to spare

What you need to know

  • Several users have taken to social media to highlight their concerns over Windows 11, version 24H2 taking too long to install.
  • Tech enthusiast and developer NTDEV recently indicated Tiny11 supports and shrinks Windows 11, 24H2 to a compact install size of 3.54GB.
  • Tiny11 strips Windows 11 of key services and features to achieve its compact size.

As a seasoned observer with decades of experience in the tech world, I find myself both intrigued and sympathetic towards the plight of Windows users grappling with the latest update to Windows 11. The sizeable installations and potential system instability are issues that have long been a thorn in the side of many, myself included.

It has been announced that support for Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025. This is just under a year away, and most Windows users appear unhappy about Microsoft’s decision to move forward with these plans.

In the current market scenario, Windows 10 holds a significant lead with an impressive 62.79% share. Yet, it’s important to note that Windows 11 is steadily growing in popularity as the approaching end of Windows 10 encourages users to buy modern computers compatible with Windows 11.

There are varied reasons that can be attributed to users’ reluctance to upgrade to Windows 11, including Microsoft’s stringent system requirements and flawed design elements. Nonetheless, the shift is inevitable.

Notably, a diligent software developer named NTDEV has developed Tiny11 – a streamlined edition of Windows 11 intended for older computers that fail to meet the stringent system requirements of the standard Windows 11. This innovative program reduces the 20GB installation size of Windows 11 to under 4GB of RAM.

The developer’s recent work showcases remarkable progress, with Microsoft recently releasing the significant update for Windows 11, version 24H2, packed with cutting-edge AI features like Windows Studio Effects, Live Captions, among others. There are indications that Microsoft’s contentious privacy and security tool, Windows Recall, could make a return.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve noticed quite a few users voicing their worry on social media about the lengthy installation process of Windows 11’s big 2024 update. The delay could possibly be due to the update’s considerable size. Yet, it seems that Tiny11 might offer an “easy-install” solution instead.

Recently, NTDEV posted on platform X (previously known as Twitter) that the upcoming 2024 update for Microsoft’s Windows 11 can be used with the Tiny11 ISO builder. The Tiny11 tool reduces the installation size of Windows 11, version 24H2, making it small enough to fit onto a standard DVD.

According to a post by NTDEV, they successfully performed a fresh installation of Windows 11 version 24H2, which was optimized for smaller space requirements using Tiny11 and LZX compression techniques. In essence, the developer reduced the update’s installation size from its original large format to approximately 3.54GB.

remarkably efficient given that typical Windows 11 installation takes up around 20-30GB of your hard drive space. Since it’s less than 4GB, it can be installed on a DVD drive, leaving plenty of room for extra storage.

Tool named Tiny11 enables users to perform a custom installation of Windows 11 on their devices, excluding additional services and applications that might not be required.

It worth noting that the experience could potentially ship with its fair share of setbacks, including blue screen errors, system instability, and data loss. You also risk not getting updates from Microsoft since they are not supported on your system or even “bricking” your device.
