Ella Emhoff is reflecting on her time as a member of the United States’ second family.

The stepdaughter of the former Vice President Kamala Harris (and daughter of Doug Emhoff, who was then the Second Gentleman, and his former wife Kerstin Emhoff) gave insights into her real-life experiences during Harris’ tenure before Donald Trump took office on January 20th.

The 25-year-old shared on Instagram, ‘Today, we’re all experiencing a range of feelings,’ accompanied by photos spanning the last four years, featuring Lady Gaga and brother Cole Emhoff. Currently, I’m grappling with a wide assortment of emotions as I look back on these past 4 years.

Ella, a fashion designer and model who completed her studies at the Parsons School of Design in New York City in 2021, thanked her followers for helping her carve her unique journey, while also acknowledging those who haven’t been as encouraging.

She went on to express her heartfelt appreciation for all those who stood by her throughout this challenging phase in her life. Some moments were incredibly joyful, others painfully difficult. For those who caused unnecessary hardship, she couldn’t help but feel disappointed.

She expressed, “It’s been absolutely remarkable and a privilege to be the second-born daughter. I appreciate your trust in allowing me to do things in my unique style.

How did Harris spend her day? She went to the inauguration of Trump, whom she faced as a rival in the 2024 U.S. presidential race, and later traveled back to California to meet up with firefighters who have been tirelessly battling the various wildfires around Los Angeles.

However, throughout her tenure as Vice President, Harris frequently emphasized the significance of her cherished role – that of a “Momala” to Ella and Cole.

In 2023, she shared with People magazine, “Momala is one of my favorite titles. It’s more common than we often discuss – co-parenting. We don’t typically call ourselves stepparents, but rather individuals who play a vital role in nurturing a child whom we deeply cherish as our own. The kids bestowed this name upon me, and I wear it with honor.

Shyamala Gopalan and Donald J. Harris were both born in 1938, with Shyamala hailing from southern India and Donald from Jamaica. As graduate students at the University of California, Berkeley and members of the Afro American Association study group, they met in 1962 and married the following year. Their daughters Kamala Harris and Maya Harris were born in 1964 and 1967, respectively.

In her 2020 Democratic National Convention speech, Kamala Harris described their relationship as blossoming during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. However, they later separated. In her book “The Truths We Hold,” Harris wrote that by the time she was five years old, the couple’s incompatibility had led to their divorce, with Shyamala taking charge of their upbringing.

After his academic career at the University of Wisconsin, Donald joined Stanford and is currently an emeritus professor of economics. Tragically, Shyamala passed away in 2009 at the age of 70. She was a renowned breast cancer researcher whose work on isolating and characterizing the progesterone receptor gene significantly advanced our understanding of hormone-responsiveness in breast tissue.

Growing up in Matawan, New Jersey, but originally hailing from Brooklyn in 1964, I’m Doug Emhoff – a lifestyle expert, attorney, and educator, who relocated to Los Angeles with my family during my teenage years. I earned my B.A. in Communications from California State University, Northridge in 1987 and followed it up with a J.D. from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law three years later.

As I shared with CBS’s Sunday Morning, fate brought me together with my remarkable partner, Kamala Harris, in 2013 after a mutual friend arranged a blind date for us. After some gentle prodding from a pal, I sent her a playful text during a Lakers game, which read, “Hey, it’s Doug. A little awkward, I’m texting you.” She replied with an enthusiastic message about the Lakers and, as it turned out, hid her admiration for the underdog Warriors.

I must confess that I was unsure if she would ever respond after I left what I considered a rather ridiculous voicemail. But to my delight, Kamala found my message “just adorable,” even though she did admit to Googling me before our date.

Three years later, we exchanged vows in a courthouse in Santa Barbara, California, just before Kamala was elected as the U.S. Senator in 2017. As the first-ever second gentleman and the first Jewish spouse of an American president or vice president, I am proud to stand by her side. In addition to my public role, I have taught law courses at Georgetown University and am a devoted father to children Cole and Ella Emhoff, whom I share with my former wife Kerstin Emhoff.

Cole Emhoff, born in 1994, will forever cherish the moment he was introduced to Harris. In his own words, “I met her and we shared an extraordinary meal,” Cole recounted to Glamour in 2020. “It struck me that Doug had encountered someone who was entirely distinct and truly exceptional. I believe for all of us, it was love at first sight.”

Cole completed his education at Colorado College in 2017. As reported by People, using information from his now-private LinkedIn profile, he has worked for Brad Pitt’s production company Plan B. Cole is also married to Greenley Littlejohn, with Harris officiating their wedding in 2023.

Born in 1999, Ella Emhoff, named after the legendary jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald, recounted a familiar feeling from her initial encounter with Harris. “It seemed as though we had been acquainted for ages,” the artist expressed to Glamour while still in high school. She emphasized that it was crucial to understand Harris as an individual first, rather than just a politician.

Years later, Ella introduced Harris during the 2020 Democratic National Convention, where she accepted her vice-presidential nomination. Her LinkedIn profile reveals that Ella, who previously confirmed her relationship with GQ editor Samuel Hine, graduated from New York’s Parson’s School of Design in 2021 with a degree in Fine and Studio Arts. Prior to this, she interned at A.L.C. and worked as a fabricator at The Haas Brothers.

In addition to being a multi-disciplinary artist, having established her own company Soft Hands, Ella is also a model represented by IMG Models. She has showcased her work in both Paris and New York Fashion Week.

Harris’ younger sister, Maya Harris, plays a significant role in her life. As Harris herself stated in 2019 to The Washington Post, their bond is unbreakable, and they have been together through all the joyous, challenging, and transitional moments of their lives. During Harris’ 2020 presidential campaign, Maya served as a campaign chairperson and later advocated for her sister’s vice presidency alongside President Joe Biden. Previously, she worked as a senior policy advisor to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during Clinton’s 2016 presidential bid.

Born in 1967, Maya graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, and later earned her law degree from Stanford Law School. Her career includes leadership roles at the Ford Foundation, ACLU of Northern California, a senior fellow position at the Center for American Progress, a visiting scholar appointment at Harvard Law School, and a contributor to The Covenant with Black America.

Maya is married to Tony West, former Associate Attorney General, and current Chief Legal Officer at Uber. They have a daughter named Meena Harris together.

1984 saw the birth of Meena Harris, who happens to be Harris’ niece. She graduated from Stanford University for her undergraduate studies and furthered her education at Harvard Law School. Beyond her career as an attorney, she has also held significant roles at Facebook, Slack, and Uber.

Later in life, Meena established Phenomenal, a company that combines consumer goods with media, having produced musicals like “Suffs”, “& Juliet”, and “A Strange Loop” and acquiring the satirical women’s magazine “Reductress”. She is also a successful children’s book author with titles such as “Kamala and Maya’s Big Idea”, “Ambitious Girl”, and “The Truth About Mrs. Claus” under her belt.

Meena is also the mother of daughters Amara and Leela, whom she shares with Nik Ajagu.
