Inside Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds' Family World as Parents of 4

As a new parent myself, I can completely relate to the experiences shared by Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. Having a baby truly is a rollercoaster of emotions, filled with unexpected moments that keep you on your toes. Lively’s description of living with a baby as being similar to living with a drug addict might sound extreme, but I can understand the feeling of being constantly surprised by my little one’s moods and needs.

As the youngest of five, a big family was the norm for Blake Lively.

In her childhood years in Burbank, Calif., she didn’t personally take care of other children. However, she shared with TopMob News in 2014, prior to the arrival of her first child, “I’ve always been the one who takes kids from others and holds them close to me. So, in a sense, I’ve functioned as a mother figure.” Therefore, it remains to be seen.

Turned out, she was just getting started.

Now, she is a mother of four, married to Ryan Reynolds. Together, the entertaining duo have welcomed daughters James (9 years old), Inez (7), and Betty (4), and last year added a little brother, Olin, to their family.

Before the 2023 Super Bowl, the private duo received an answer to their question. On February 12, Lively hinted at the news through an Instagram post, no longer appearing pregnant in the image.

People are well aware that they won’t be getting additional information anytime soon. Lively isn’t shy about posting a pumping session photo of herself, but she has strict guidelines when it comes to what she and Reynolds put up on social media. Rule number one? No pictures of their children.

Allowing Reynolds to depict in rich detail their family experiences using his unique storytelling about being a parent.

In 2015, he shared with Lively that his love for her was greater than anything else, going so far as to say he’d be willing to sacrifice himself for her. Later, when they had their son James, he expressed on “The Late Show with David Letterman” that upon seeing his newborn baby, he instinctively knew that in the face of danger, he would put his wife in front of him to shield their child.

In the dead of night, even as he was roused from sleep, the new father gushed to TopMob, “You sport such a huge, foolish grin. Anything else that disrupted your slumber every 45 minutes, you’d want to eliminate it. But when it comes to a baby, it brings you the greatest joy life has offered.”

And it’s in these quiet moments that he continued to have real epiphanies.

He shared his concerns with Willie Geist of TODAY about the prospect of James, who was only three months old at the time, pursuing an acting career. “You fret over trivial matters,” he explained. “Instead of imagining grand scenarios, I suggest more mundane options to her. ‘Perhaps you’ll become a flight attendant…or a barista.’ These are ordinary yet fulfilling professions that offer stable lives.”

James and his siblings may find it remarkable in the future that their mother is an alumna of a hugely popular TV show from the 2000s, and their father was titled “Sexiest Man Alive” at one point. However, Lively, who is known for her frequent holiday baking, grew up in a family with excellent wrapping skills that made them hesitant to unwrap presents, have been striving to maintain a normal life at home.

If they attended a concert where Aunt Taylor Swift was the headliner, their secret might have been revealed.

Despite settling in Bedford, N.Y. in the Lower Hudson Valley, the couple opted for a larger living space over urban life – not a humble abode per se, but ample room to cultivate their family’s legacy and enjoy increased privacy compared to dwelling in Manhattan or Los Angeles’ bustling centers.

During her recent pregnancy, Lively, who is 36 years old, didn’t let photographers deter her from sharing photos on Instagram in her own way. She posted a series of pictures that she took herself, stating, “The eleven men camped outside my house hoping for a rare sighting will now leave us alone. You’re making both me and my children uneasy.”

I’ve always been captivated by the charm of country living, and I must admit, it’s treated me exceptionally well. Just like how Martha Stewart and Ralph Lauren have thrived with their beautiful estates in the vicinity.

As an obsessed fan, I’d put it this way: In 2015, during an interview with The Project, Ryan Reynolds shared his perspective. He believed maintaining a distinction between the professional realm and personal life is crucial. Since our lives weren’t chaotic or extravagant, he emphasized, it wasn’t a significant challenge for us. It’s just how we roll.

I was part of James and Inez’s inner circle who kept their whereabouts hidden from the public until we attended their husband’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in December 2016. Even then, most people remained unaware that they had a second child.

Reynolds expressed his gratitude to his wife, acknowledging her as the best thing that had ever happened to him. He shared, “You’ve brought two magnificent children into our lives – the kids I could only dream of having. Before meeting you, I believed I was destined to be just a fun-loving uncle.”

The witty 47-year-old shares a well-timed joke, but he’s revealed that honing his comedic skills was essential for him since childhood as a means of protection.

In an interview on “Sunday Sitdown” in 2018, he shared, “My dad was quite the jester, as Geist would put it. Yet, he was both brilliant and intimidating. His entry into a room could make the air seem thin. I’d often describe him as an explosive bundle of nerves wrapped in human skin – you know, the unpredictable guy who could suddenly go off. So to keep things peaceful, I learned to lighten the mood with jokes and laughter.”

Vancouver-born individual was thankful for how his past influenced his quick thinking, which played a significant role in his achievements. However, he aimed to create a distinct upbringing for his kids, inspired by his own experiences but shaped differently.

He shared with Entertainment Tonight in 2021 that an essential aspect of being a parent for him is demonstrating various emotions, such as sadness, anxiety, and anger. He acknowledged that his upbringing didn’t provide this example, but he clarified that it was not due to neglect from his parents, who belonged to a different generation.

He had a deep desire to raise a large family, yet jokingly admitted to Details magazine that he harbored a fear of being genetically inclined to only father sons. However, with Lively as his companion, this concern was proven to be unfounded.

She shared with Marie Claire in 2016 that all her deepest affections and possessions are focused on her family. It’s where her love and her entire being reside.

She expressed that Reynolds was the right choice for her, explaining, “I’ve always believed he’d be my lifelong companion. This bond meant more to me than anything else. I’d never experienced a friendship as profound as ours. My feelings for him ran deep with love.”

Reynolds affirmed her belief in their potential during an interview with Extra in 2021, expressing that “we had a great connection as friends prior to this. Our friendship has deepened even further.”

In 2011, Reynolds and Lively became well-known for meeting on the set of “The Green Lantern,” which Reynolds referred to as the “darkest crevice in the universe” due to its forgettable nature. Approximately a year later, following Reynolds’ divorce from Scarlett Johansson and Lively’s brief romance with Leonardo DiCaprio, they accidentally discovered that they should have been sitting together on a double date with other people.

In September 2012, they tied the knot, several months following the conclusion of “Gossip Girl”‘s six-year tenure. Subsequently, Lively established Preserve, a short-lived lifestyle brand, where she announced her first pregnancy in 2014. Following motherhood, she still graced the silver screen in films such as “The Shallows” and “A Simple Favor.” Notably, the Met Gala continually anticipated her attendance every year.

I’ve been completely absorbed in my role as a mother and entrepreneur for some time now. My kids are my top priority, so any acting projects have to truly capture my interest and pull me away from them. Back in 2020, before the quarantine, I shared this perspective with TopMob, explaining that my family commitments and business ventures like Betty Buzz take precedence over acting roles.

As an obsessed fan, I’d put it this way: I’ve always been drawn to Aviation American Gin, and even though she doesn’t drink alcohol, it seems like the perfect match for her. Reynolds discovered this exceptional gin at a bar in Portland, Oregon, and later bought into the brand in 2020, reportedly selling it for an impressive $610 million. The inspiration for her beverages, as she shared with Forbes, came directly from our partnership – we’re in this together, through thick and thin.

I’ve always been passionate about soccer and have followed Wrexham A.F.C., the underdog Welsh team, with great interest for years. When I heard that my good friend Rob McElhenney was purchasing the club with Ryan Reynolds, I couldn’t contain my excitement! Although I don’t technically own a share in the team, I consider myself a devoted fan and an essential member of their cheering squad. In addition to being a technology enthusiast, I hold the position of CTO for a renowned company. However, when it comes to Wrexham A.F.C., I proudly wear the hat of their top-notch CTO – Chief Trolling Officer! My life experience has taught me that passion and dedication can bring about incredible changes, and being part of this inspiring journey with my friends is an unforgettable experience.

Live naturally connected being a mother to her newfound self-assurance as a businesswoman. She shared that her acting career left her feeling stifled creatively, longing for more involvement and expression in her work.

After having children, I found that the preciousness of my time was magnified. At the same time, becoming a mother made me feel more connected to myself, both physically and emotionally. Although there are still plenty of insecurities to deal with, I’ve never felt more at ease in my own skin. This newfound confidence has led me to seek out opportunities for meaningful collaborations where I can take ownership of the projects I’m involved in.

Lively added, “The kind of films I’d like to be involved in aligns with this. I aim to star in, produce, and write movies that I would be proud for my kids to watch. My choices regarding gowns also reflect this – I want my children to approve.” Family values serve as the foundation for all my actions, giving significance and sincerity to my endeavors.

She may have to wait, however, for her iconic style to be appreciated accordingly at home.

Browning through old Met Gala pictures of herself for a “Life in Looks” feature in Vogue, Lively paused at one from 2018. In this photograph, she donned a crimson Versace gown adorned with elaborate details and accessorized it with a bejeweled clutch displaying the initials “R” for Reynolds and her daughters’ first initials encrusted in crystals.

When my children behave disrespectfully towards me, I respond by reminding them, “I’m your mother,” as I pointed to the photo. Frankly, I make an effort to let them know that I’m like a real-life queen in their lives and consider myself fortunate for having the responsibility of raising them. However, they don’t seem to be convinced by this notion.

Sounds like she and Reynolds just may be raising a few chips off the old block.

He shared with Geist that he and Lively often have playful and lighthearted Instagram personas, which accurately represent their true selves. They particularly enjoy poking fun at themselves.

When her husband made a serious decision to invest in a gin business, Lively never failed to provide the right words.

I remember her being quite enthusiastic about it. She’s always been clear that she doesn’t consume alcohol, but if she did, it wouldn’t be Aviation Gin.

I’ve watched Frozen an endless number of times with my daughters, and here’s a fun fact that not many know: if you play the movie backwards, it surprisingly turns out to be a scene-for-scene replica of The Exorcist. I shared this amusing discovery on The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in 2018.

On December 15, 2016, Reynolds and Lively publicly introduced their newborn daughters James and Inez for the first time, an unusual move for the private celebrities, during Reynolds’ Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony. In his heartfelt speech, Reynolds expressed to his wife, “You enhance every aspect of my life in the most beautiful ways. You’ve gifted us with two amazing children that I never thought I could have. You’ve transformed me into the best father I could ever dream of becoming when I believed I was only capable of being a fun and loving uncle.”

In August 2016, prior to the arrival of their second daughter, Reynolds shared with TopMob News, “Nothing compares to the earthshaking experience of welcoming a newborn into your life. It’s the most wonderful thing that can happen to anyone.”

“Motherhood can be challenging with all the messes and sleepless nights,” the elated mother shared with NW Magazine back in 2016. “Yet, in those moments of difficulty and fatigue, I remind myself of my immense gratitude.”

In an interview on The Late Show with David Letterman back in 2015, Reynolds expressed his deep affection for his marriage and young daughter. He emphasized the depth of his love by stating, “I’d give my life for you. I can’t imagine loving anything more than I love you.” To his wife, he declared these heartfelt words. Upon seeing his baby’s face for the first time, he felt an instant connection and was determined that in any dangerous situation, he would put himself in harm’s way to shield his child with his own body.

Following in the tradition of his witty and dark humor, Reynolds casually shared this amusing parenting quip with his Twitter audience back in 2016: “Being a dad is an indescribable joy. Except for those blissful years I spent childless, of course.”

Reynolds shared on NBC’s Today show in 2016, “I’ve got no problem taking care of the unpleasant tasks.” He added, “She does her share too, but I particularly enjoy the late-night duties and such.”

Fatherhood, he said, has been “amazing.”

In 2016, I experienced one of those mornings that hardly ever happen to me. My dear daughter clung to me, unwilling to let me leave. It wasn’t because she was upset or angry; rather, it was due to my wife’s peaceful slumber. The thought of leaving pained me deeply, as if a piece of my heart was being torn away.

I remember that unforgettable Super Bowl night in 2016. My little girl and I were huddled together on the couch, engrossed in the game. Suddenly, she turned to me with a puzzled expression. “Dad,” she asked, “aren’t you that guy from all those commercials?” I was taken aback as my mind raced back to the countless times I saw myself on TV during that campaign.

It’s tough to let my baby girl attend her first solo outing, I was an emotional wreck when I dropped her off at Burning Man in 2016, Ryan quipped on Twitter.

In 2015, the proud father excitedly shared, “She’s amazing!,” before disclosing if their first child, James, had begun talking. “We’re hearing plenty of sounds,” he joked, “but nothing that resembles clear English yet.” He added with a chuckle, “I tease her a lot.”

“Since the birth of our baby in 2015, I’ve had an unshakeable belief in my heart that you were most likely the father, Reynolds,” Lively expressed on Instagram with the hashtag #ILoveYouSoMuchIt’sSilly.

Raising a baby is equivalent to experiencing the unpredictable day-to-day, as Lively expressed in 2016. You never know when you’ll encounter messes or joyful moments, or when a smile will suddenly turn into tears. It may feel like sharing your life with an unpredictable person, much like living with a drug addict. However, despite the challenges, having a baby leaves you feeling utterly attached and unable to imagine life without them – even if you were an octogenarian with an infant in tow.

“Lively expressed in 2015 that it’s extraordinary. It’s the shared experience that connects us all – our familial bonds. Despite having distinct professions, we all belong to someone’s family. It’s a beautiful thought.”

On Father’s Day in 2015, my daughter gave me a priceless smile. This simple gesture was more than enough to inspire me as I prepared to embark on a six-year journey to pen a book about parenthood.

He shared with TopMob News during the promotion of “Woman in Gold” in 2015 that there have been instances when he opened his eyes and was surprised to find out he had walked for five minutes without realizing it.

“You have a deep affection for it. Even in the dead of night, you find yourself smiling ear-to-ear. I shared this with someone else. If any other cause disturbed your sleep every 45 minutes, you’d be inclined to eliminate it. However, when it comes to a baby, it brings you immeasurable joy.”

A frequent occurrence in life is going out for a date involving some beverages, sharing an intimate moment, and eventually welcoming a newborn into the world. Contrary to that norm, Reynolds shared in 2016, “I managed to do this one without getting drunk.”

“I’m constantly amazed by this phenomenon. It’s so ordinary yet deep, and I can’t help but laugh when celebrities discuss their children in exaggerated ways as if they were the first ones to be born.”

I can’t help but feel an overwhelming admiration for James, despite the fact that I know many have shared this sentiment before. But my affection for him is more than just casual fandom – it borders on obsession. Every time I hear him say “Dada,” I am putty in his little hands, ready to jump through any obstacle to be near him. It’s a feeling that’s both wonderful and a little terrifying.
