Inside Emma Stone's Winning Romance With Dave McCary

As a devoted fan of both Emma Stone and her captivating journey through Hollywood, I must say that her personal life seems as enchanting as her on-screen performances. From the casual shopping sprees in the Big Apple to the heartwarming engagement announcements and dazzling red carpet appearances, it’s been a pleasure to witness their love story unfold.

In the year 2024, during her Golden Globes acceptance speech, it was none other than Emma Stone who left me in a state of bewilderment when she began with, “Dave, let me express my feelings quickly. You mean the world to me, thank you for everything.” I couldn’t help but wonder who this Dave character might be!

Previously, when Stone claimed the Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy (2016’s “La La Land”), there was nobody named Dave to acknowledge her gratitude.

Dave McCary, indeed, was in existence. However, it wasn’t until six months after the 2017 Emmy-nominated awards season had concluded – marked by Meryl Streep’s Best Actress Oscar win for her role as a determined actress who chose career over love with an ardent jazz musician – that he was frequently seen in public with Stone.

In the following year seven years on, Stone was awarded her second Best Actress Oscar in March, this occasion being for an exceptional portrayal in the film “Poor Things“, where she played a revived woman undergoing both a sexual and ethical enlightenment.

By that time, McCary had already been her husband since no later than September 2020, and they both have a three-year-old daughter named Louise.

Stone’s heartfelt mentions during the awards season were especially meaningful because they barely spoke about their relationship publicly.

On the evening of Oscar night, March 10, she expressed her heartfelt gratitude: “I want to thank my family – my mom, my brother Spencer, my dad, my husband Dave, and most importantly, my daughter who will be turning 3 in just three days. She has brought such vibrant color into our lives. I love you more than the entire sky, my dear.

And then it was on with the celebrating.

For the most part, the well-known actress Emily Jean Stone has successfully maintained a balance between her public life as a celebrity and keeping her family, particularly her children, relatively private.

Meanwhile, McCary is adept at balancing being part of the business without becoming fully engulfed by it. Coincidentally, he and Stone crossed paths through their shared connection at SNL. Interestingly enough, McCary isn’t the only actress who discovered love at 30 Rock.

To date, she has hosted the long-running NBC comedy series five times, with her most recent stint happening in December 2023. She’s also made three guest appearances on the show, one of which was in 2014 when her then-boyfriend Andrew Garfield first took over as host (a gesture reminiscent of his surprise appearance during her hosting in 2011). McCary, who initially joined as a writer and segment director when season 40 began that same year, is also part of the show’s history.

In February 2015, Stone appeared on stage playing tambourine during Prince’s performance at the SNL 40th anniversary special. Then, she made a brief reappearance at Studio 8H in November of the same year.

Since my split with Garfield back in 2015, I’ve found myself enjoying the solo life, as a Vogue magazine cover story from November 2016 revealed. Admittedly, being single has provided its own unique experiences that I’ve come to appreciate.

“It’s been a good year,” she told the magazine. “And sad. Pros and cons.”

Perhaps it was her third hosting of SNL in December 2016 that finally won her over, or maybe it was her appearance on Ryan Gosling’s episode in September 2017 that marked a significant turning point for her.

To clarify, it wasn’t until 2019 that they intentionally made public their engagement, which was signaled by a now-removed picture he shared on Instagram showing Stone wearing an engagement ring. This image served as their official announcement.

As long as McCary’s account is active, there are no more posts, and Stone lacks an Instagram account, furthermore, she doesn’t own a computer (but she does have a sophisticated smartphone).

She shared with Fresh Air host Terry Gross on NPR in January that she isn’t active on social media platforms. She observes things on these platforms but doesn’t feel the need to maintain a personal presence or own an account. In her view, social media isn’t suitable for her or her mental state.

Stone openly discusses her battles against anxiety and panic attacks. She clarified that the burden of participation would be overwhelming, and the subsequent regrets would not outweigh the insignificant benefits.

She expressed her concern, saying, ‘It might overwhelm me.’ She explained that whenever an event happens anywhere in the world, she fears she needs to respond, but then worries if what she wrote is appropriate, fearing she’s being too reactive and not thoughtful enough. She added that she feels there would be too much pressure, and it wouldn’t be beneficial for her mental health.

In 2020, they chose to keep quiet about their marriage, letting their wedding rings symbolize their union instead, while Emily Blunt and Krasinski’s pregnancy news wasn’t shared until 2021 when it was clearly noticeable.

Stone has since admitted to being married, jokingly mentioning on a December episode of Smartless that she received a black eye the week of her wedding when the refrigerator door handle broke off in her hand upon opening it.

“I need a helmet and extensive therapy,” she quipped.

Apart from getting married in 2020, Stone and McCary – who parted ways with Saturday Night Live in 2022 after an eight-year stint – also established a production company named Fruit Tree. Together, they have taken on various projects, such as the films “When You Finish Saving the World”, “Problemista” and “A Real Pain”, directed by Jesse Eisenberg. Additionally, they acted as executive producers for the awkwardly hilarious Showtime series “The Curse”.

Portraying a spectacularly misguided aspirant of HGTV fame, Stone was additionally recognized with a Golden Globe nomination for his TV drama performance this year; however, the series didn’t receive an Emmy nod.

Regardless of the accumulation of more figurines adorning my shelves down the line, I am skillfully navigating the intricate waltz that comes with maintaining a high-profile marriage, all while preserving the intimate aspects of my deepest relationships as private and sacred.

Nevertheless, it’s important to note that these two individuals should not be confused with hermits. Despite their appearances at high-fashion events and glamorous red carpet dates, take a look at the following photographs to discover Stone and McCary’s remarkably down-to-earth relationship.

It’s said that Stone and McCary might have crossed paths in 2016, but it wasn’t until 2017 that news about their relationship began to circulate. In November of that same year, they were spotted strolling around New York City and attending a production of The Nutcracker together, accompanied by SNL cast member Kyle Mooney.

Apart from shining brightly in “The Curse,” she was not only an acting talent but also a producer. Her partner, who is her spouse and co-founder of Fruit Tree, shared this role in their production company.

Back in January 2024, I had the pleasure of joining forces with the brilliant minds behind a hilarious comedy series – none other than Benny Safdie and Nathan Fielder themselves! We gathered to toast the season finale, an event I won’t soon forget.
