Selena Gomez knows the world can be a nasty place.
However, despite her tactic of responding warmly to critics, reading negative comments, especially those concerning her weight, sometimes takes a toll on her emotions.
During their interview on the “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast on March 24th, Selena expressed this thought: “I often find myself getting distracted by things,” she said. “It doesn’t bring any value to your life. It’s just so challenging with the choices, the people you encounter in dating. It seems like men don’t care about those issues.
The 32-year-old went on, “I believe we’re all burdened with a lot, and my weight is one of those burdens too. Everyone seems to have an opinion, and it’s been quite disheartening. I don’t want to be labeled as a victim, but I must admit it’s made me somewhat cynical. And yet, I feel a pang of guilt for admitting this. But honestly, it’s the truth.
Selena has openly discussed her weight changes due to her long struggle with lupus and hasn’t hesitated to respond to critics commenting on her physique. However, she recognizes that being a prominent figure, she is under close observation when she attends public events.
The “Only Murders in the Building” star expressed that it’s common knowledge women tend to experience stronger emotions regarding their appearance, clothing choices, and other aspects. She admitted that when preparing for an event, her thoughts often revolve around hoping she can take a photo and then relax afterwards.
She went on to say, “It’s people’s perception of me based on my character that’s at issue. I’m often told I don’t ‘fit’ because I’m not white enough, and similarly, I’m not considered ‘Mexican’ enough. There are many aspects of my appearance that stand out, and unfortunately, I can’t help but notice them. They don’t contribute anything positive to your life.
A more effective approach for the “Younger & Hotter Than Me” singer has been stepping away from online platforms and disregarding the comments.
She mentioned that she’s more content without it, as she had to pause periodically. Even now, being human, she takes breaks and often reads things. However, most of the time she manages to disregard distractions. At the moment, her phone doesn’t have anything on it. So, there are strategies for overcoming such situations.
Yet, Selena acknowledged that following a barrage of negativity, she’s grown adept at embracing affection, particularly from Benny – the man who asked for her hand in marriage last December, marking their first anniversary together.
She mentioned that when you compliment me, dear, I truly trust his words. Nowadays, I’m wary of people flattering me insincerely. He speaks honestly because he genuinely feels that way, and it’s those sincere sentiments that make me feel appreciated.

In a TikTok video shared on May 3, the daughter of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe expressed, “Not a big deal, but I’ve just hit a significant accomplishment online as a woman. Two separate individuals commented on my physique.
She went on to say, “The first one suggested that I should join a gym called ‘Oz*mpic’ since I’m overweight. The second one claimed that I was not eating enough because I look too skinny. However, my weight remained the same during the time between their remarks. And frankly, it’s none of their business if it did!
Ava stated, “Nobody should be criticized based on their appearance.” She continued, “Often, we don’t realize the hardships others face or their inner struggles. Yet, regardless of who you are, your beauty extends far beyond mere physical appearances.
Following some comments that were disrespectful towards her body, the singer known as “I’m Good” retaliated against the critics by addressing why she is fed up with the constant criticism regarding her physical appearance. In a tweet from June 23rd, she openly acknowledged weight gain and expressed her exhaustion over the discussions, stating bluntly, “Next!!!”.
In another message, the 33-year-old wrote, “People naturally experience changes in their weight.” She elaborated, “Life can be unpredictable, and it’s essential to remember that one might not fully understand another person’s situation, such as medications, health issues, and so on…
Following some criticism on Instagram about the actress from “House Bunny” being too thin in a photo, she responded by saying, “I felt compelled to address this issue to raise awareness about body shaming. The harsh comments left on my picture yesterday left me feeling quite down, as I was having fun with the silly photos I took. It was an unflattering angle that made me appear smaller than I am in real life. However, just because you believe it’s your duty or even your prerogative to express unfiltered opinions or judgments about my body for others to see… it isn’t.
She went on to say, “It’s unhelpful and downright disrespectful when you criticize my weight in your comments by suggesting I’m too thin or need to eat more. Such remarks are body-shaming, and it’s behavior I strongly oppose.
Over a week past that point, she posted a picture of herself lounging in a bikini soaking up the sun, captioned, “For those who aren’t fans…with affection and gratitude, kisses from my [peach emoji]. I’ll continue to keep smiling regardless [peace sign emoji].” (As an overly enthusiastic fan)
In February of 2021, the actress found herself at the center of public conjecture over her pregnancy, sparked by images shared online showing her in a dark blue tank top on an Australian film set. Taking to Instagram in a rare post, she criticized the news outlet that published these photos, stating, “It seems I’m not pregnant… Yet it seems acceptable in 2021 for people to speculate and comment on a woman’s body shape whenever they please? Let’s strive for better, @nypost.
The star of the show “Flip or Flop” addressed criticism about her appearance on social media, saying that people were commenting on her thinness or suggesting she should eat more. She clarified in an Instagram Story video on February 7th that this is her natural weight, and that she had simply returned to her original weight after giving birth. So, rest assured, she’s doing well.
After parting ways with Jim Edmonds, the ex-Bravo star requested her followers to halt comments about my physique. “‘Have a burger.’ That’s what they suggest. To be honest, I am underweight according to myself: “But please, I ask for understanding. I am tirelessly working to balance my life, putting my children first in all aspects.
In response to being labeled “too skinny,” the renowned singer defended herself against the criticism by stating, “Is there something wrong with my physique? I’ve always been slim. I practice ballet and do a lot of stretching exercises, which not only benefit my physical health but also my mental and spiritual well-being.” (To Entertainment Tonight)
She made it clear: “If you’re sensitive to criticism, this may not be the ideal setting for you. I prioritize my own needs and move away from things that don’t benefit me. I entrust my superiors to handle any potential issues that might arise, and if anyone is affected, they will deal with it. As for me, I must concentrate on what aligns with my interests, feelings, and lastly, remember, you can’t make everyone happy.
In June 2020, the singer of “Good as Hell” spoke out against body shamers. She explained in a TikTok video that she’s been working out for five years to achieve her own ideal body type, not anyone else’s. She asserted, “I don’t owe you any details about my body or why I work out, because I know I’m beautiful and strong. I do my job well and that’s all that matters.
The self-assured singer has never shied away from speaking out against body shamers. In an interview with Glamour back in 2016, she expressed, “If someone calls me fat, even in a vulnerable moment, I chuckle to myself and think, I’m doing my best, so there’s nothing more I can do.” She further stated, “I don’t have a six-pack. frankly, it doesn’t seem very enticing to me.
Following the Oscar winner’s decision to share an unclothed image online, one commentator, who later deleted their tweet, expressed disapproval by saying, “It’s hard to picture someone in their 50s continuing to post suggestive content for male attention during menopause, when they could be enjoying time with their grandchildren instead. It seems that maintaining dignity gracefully in the aging process is becoming less common.
Later on, Halle retorted playfully, “By the way, did you all know that a shrimp’s heart is actually found in its head?
The star of “Señorita” earlier shared a message on Instagram Stories to her critics. In her lengthy post, she mentioned that she usually avoids social media to shield herself from hurtful things, but recently came across an article about body shaming. Initially feeling insecure about how she imagined the pictures must look, she then realized that everyone has bad photos and awkward angles. Her body isn’t perfect, as it isn’t made of stone or muscles. She continued by expressing her concern for young girls growing up in a world where social media presents an unattainable perfection. They see heavily photoshopped images and believe they are the norm, when in reality, they aren’t. Airbrushed skin is fake, and it’s becoming the new standard of beauty. She wrote this post for young girls like her sister who are growing up on social media, constantly exposed to edited pictures. She wants them to know that cellulite and fat are normal, beautiful, and natural. On this day, she refuses to be swayed by the untruths. She hopes you won’t either.
In May 2019, the singer shared a video of herself performing at Hangout Music Festival in a black leotard. This prompted a social media user to tweet, “To be honest, I didn’t think she was that large!? I’ve only seen her before in the song with those two country musicians!!” However, the pop star responded swiftly, saying, “I put on some weight, deal with it.
She additionally criticized the fashion world, as she asserted that certain designers declined to outfit her for the Grammys due to her weight. On Instagram in January 2019, she expressed, “Encourage women to embrace their bodies rather than making them feel inferior because of their size.” She added, “We are beautiful at any size! Whether small or large! And my size 8 figure is heading to the Grammys anyway. #LOVEYOURBODY
Previously, a famous individual shared a photograph showing her family rejoicing following her husband Stephen Curry and his Golden State Warriors teammates clinching victory against the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals. In the image, the celebrity is noticeably cradling her son Canon. Subsequently, one of her followers inquired, “Is there another baby on the way?
She laughed, but said emphatically, ‘No way!’ At that moment, every picture shows my 30 lb son putting a strain on my back.
In a different post, someone commented, “It seems that child weighs around 30 pounds, which suggests some significant health concerns.” However, the cookbook writer quickly dismissed this, saying, “I’m sorry, but that’s not correct. Absolutely not.
A mere seven days following the arrival of her newborn, the podcast host shared a message on Instagram with her followers.
She expressed her feelings of frustration in December 2018, stating she needed to vent because she was so upset. She wanted to share a photo of her stomach to showcase her journey towards health, but ultimately decided not to post it due to the negative comments she received on her previous picture. In response to the criticism, she clarified that she did not undergo a tummy tuck, nor does she have a personal chef or daily training routine. She mentioned that she had experienced multiple stomach surgeries before, including a c-section, and was still recovering with some pain. Despite this, she felt compelled to defend herself for posting the photo with a belly bandit wrapped tightly around her waist and high-waisted pants.
She questioned why women feel the need to compare themselves to each other and shame one another, stating that every woman has a unique journey and body type, which heals differently and looks different. She called on everyone to be kinder to themselves and recognize that every woman is beautiful in her own way. She urged people not to tear others down by comparing them but instead to uplift each other. She ended the post by expressing her love for her audience and returning to taking care of her baby.
In April 2018, the actress from Fuller House posted a photo of her having dinner with her son Lev Bure. At that time, someone rude made a comment saying, “Even with all that exercise, you seem heavier than your husband. Did you alter your eating habits?
Nevertheless, the actress promptly dismissed the critic. In response, she said, “If a 25-inch waist appears large to you, then perhaps your perspective is skewed. Take care.” [She was implying that her body measurement wasn’t something to judge or comment on.]
