Inside Nicole Kidman & Keith Urban’s Epic Love Story

In January 2005, during the G’Day LA: Australia Week gala, Keith Urban found himself feeling quite low-spirited when he encountered Nicole Kidman.

Yet it took him four months to pick up the phone.

In 2013, during an interview with Ellen, Nicole Kidman recounted that she had said something like, ‘You didn’t seem to notice or appreciate me at first glance,’ and he responded, ‘I did see you, but I chose not to show it.’ However, our paths crossed again after a few months, and four months later, he reached out to her.

A month after that, the Oscar winner was sold, as well.

2019 saw Kidman expressing to People magazine that her relationship with Urban was profoundly intense. She admitted she had come to believe by then that he was the one meant for her, perhaps due to her romantic nature, her acting background, or her strong faith. In her words, “Ah, here he is.

Not long after that, she didn’t hesitate to formalize their union, exchanging vows with Urban on June 25, 2006, at the Cardinal Cerretti Memorial Chapel in Sydney.

Or

She didn’t hold back from making it official shortly after that; on June 25, 2006, she married Urban at the Cardinal Cerretti Memorial Chapel in Sydney.

In an interview with Elle in 2014, Kidman expressed that she enjoys the experience of getting married and then growing to understand each other better. She acknowledges that this approach might sound peculiar, but for her, it feels like a more organic way of connecting.

Later on, it was disclosed that a scenic motorcycle ride through Woodstock, New York, and a romantic picnic were key factors in finalizing their relationship.

“I was a goner—I mean, c’mon,” she told WSJ. Magazine in 2020.

In my line of work as a lifestyle expert, I’ve had the pleasure of observing many relationships, and one that truly stands out is that of the elegant actress and the country singer from Nashville. Initially, some may have found their union unexpected, but over the past 19 years, they’ve consistently proven to be a perfect match. Whether gracing the red carpet together or sharing moments on Instagram, their love story continues to captivate us all.

Given the seemingly constant stream of performances, premieres, and award events across films, television, and music, there have been numerous chances to capture them expressing affectionate glances towards one another.

On selected occasions, the girls Sunday Rose (age 16) and Faith Margaret (age 14) accompany their parents in public events, like when the 2021 Golden Globes were held virtually via Zoom.

Additionally, they attended the 2024 AFI Achievement Award Gala where Kidman was being honored. Kidman herself described the event as “remarkable.

At the April 2024 event, she shared with TopMob News that she was driving in a car with her family, responding with “What? OK, let’s go,”. What has been repeatedly emphasized to her is to savor these special moments because they are so uncommon. Remarkably, she will be returning to work immediately after the event by boarding a plane.

Although Urban may have attended more Academy Awards, Golden Globes, and Met Galas than a typical New Zealander might have imagined when he first ventured onto the U.S. country music scene in the late 1990s, Kidman has also become a regular at events like the CMAs, ACMAs, CMTs, and international concert halls.

And yes, she does get a thrill from seeing her husband in his element.

In simpler terms, “He started playing when he was six years old and his enthusiasm for it is clear,” Kidman said before the 2016 CMT Music Awards. “He doesn’t feel anxious; instead, he’s eager to get on stage.

In her 2013 conversation with Ellen DeGeneres, when presented with a photo of Urban playing the guitar alongside their daughters in the back of a pickup truck, Kidman confirmed, “He is heavenly, yes, that truly reflects our lifestyle. They play music and dance, and that’s his trusty old truck.

It’s fantastic being married to a musician because you always have music playing around the house,” said Kidman, who’s known for her roles like Moulin Rouge and has even sung duets with her husband. “There’s an undeniable joy in having music. Keith is skilled at multiple instruments, often playing the piano at 7 in the morning. This means our mornings are filled with breakfast around the piano, making music a significant part of our daily life.

However, their relationship isn’t just about love and shared music moments; it’s also marked by trials they faced early on. Yet these struggles have made them cherish their present even more deeply.

On Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast in 2020, Urban expressed that she was the person he had been searching for his entire life, and everything needed to transform within him if he wanted to follow that path. He described it as a pivotal juncture in his life, stating that it was either seize this opportunity or miss out on it forever – essentially, this was his one chance to get it right.

In October 2006, only a few months after their wedding, Urban, who had previously discussed his drug issues in the 1990s, admitted himself into the Betty Ford Center for help with alcohol addiction. To show her unwavering support, Kidman postponed the remainder of her promotional tour for the film “Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus“.

In November 2007, Urban expressed to People magazine why he decided to enter rehab. He stated it was a choice between doing the right thing and potentially saving everything or risking losing everything he feared losing.

He stated, “It’s clear we crossed paths at the perfect moment,” he said. “She mentioned from the start she wanted to be courageous with me. It feels like something beyond us was orchestrating our connection and has been guiding us ever since.” Urban added, “It was incredibly challenging for her to endure that.

Kidman openly discussed her experiences with the media after bravely navigating a highly-publicized separation from Cruise, a man with whom she shares daughter Bella Kidman Cruise (aged 32) and son Connor Cruise (aged 30). She revealed that she and Urban chose to share their personal life events openly together.

She stated in the October 2007 edition of Vanity Fair: “You may try to deceive, with tricks and illusions, but then how can I visit every weekend?” This experience has also taught me a valuable lesson.

Reflecting on our brief encounter, it’s only been about two years since my chance encounter with Urban, I can’t help but feel we were both rather solitary souls. To put it simply, I believe we were two individuals who dared to be vulnerable at a time when we could truly connect with each other. There was an intricate blend of fear and courage within us.

Nicole Kidman disclosed that it was a particularly difficult environment that spurred Keith Urban into his recovery journey, but since then, she has gained an immense amount of knowledge from being in a relationship with someone who is recovering. She is more than eager to support him through this process. The two of them are strongly dedicated to their relationship.

Reflecting on the past, I can see now that connecting with Nic, falling for them, and forming a relationship was instrumental in maintaining my sobriety – a fact I didn’t fully comprehend until later. It was this connection that helped me stay strong. (Said to Rolling Stone Country in 2014)

Urban sought help at a treatment facility mere weeks following the release of his album aptly named “Love, Pain and the Entire Insanity“.

I didn’t care about anything other than making a significant change in my life and doing whatever necessary for it. I was incredibly fortunate that Nic organized an intervention for me. A close-knit circle of friends was present during the intervention, and from there, I began my journey.” He reminisced.

Referring to Kidman as his “rock” is quite an endearing description, and Urban himself has not shied away from using that term. When asked if he was apprehensive about undergoing vocal surgery in 2012, he shared with Rolling Stone that he didn’t feel fear. Instead, he felt confident in the hands of his surgeons. Having Kidman by his side made a significant difference; she was incredibly supportive and provided him with much-needed strength throughout the process. She even traveled all the way to Boston for the surgery and stayed with him every step of the way.

In 2016, when I shared this with CBS News, I expressed that meeting and marrying her wasn’t just a significant shift in my life, but rather the commencement of it. It felt as if I was saying, “Here begins my life.

Without a doubt, even the most compatible couples won’t escape the gossip mill unscathed after being together for many years, facing whispers of potential splits.

In 2013, Urban stated, “Those who truly know us are the most shocked by everything and asking, ‘Why wouldn’t you stand up for that?’ I respond, ‘It’s futile,'” but he added, “Our life itself will serve as our defense.

So the question remains, how to keep that life they’ve built together chugging along?

“We just work at it. We love each other and we work at it. It’s beautiful work,” Urban has said.

In anticipation of their significant 10th anniversary, Kidman shared with TopMob News during the 2016 Tribeca Festival, “We decided we’d celebrate all through the year.” Urban also expressed his sentiments, saying, “We truly feel so fortunate.

However, an intriguing question that arises is, what maintains their ability to reach maximum levels of romantic bliss, given they spend more time apart than the typical couple does? Or perhaps this isn’t entirely accurate?

Kidman said early on that, once they hit seven days apart, “we start to hurt.”

During the premiere of Grace of Monaco in Cannes, Kidman revealed to Rolling Stone that Urban had shared with him how challenging it was for them to be apart, describing it as “excruciatingly hard.” At that time, he mentioned they hadn’t been apart longer than five days. He emphasized that despite the distance, they maintain a strong connection, frequently communicating via Skype and phone calls multiple times each day.

In a 2015 interview with DuJour, Nicole Kidman shared that she and her husband rarely text one another. Instead, they prefer to speak over the phone. She explained that their communication is usually limited, but when they do text, it’s more about expressing a desire to hear each other’s voices. Additionally, they don’t typically email either, opting instead for maintaining an intimate and personal connection.

So that’s why when they do text, it’s… “that kind of text.”

In 2014, Kidman revealed to InStyle that Urban always wrote a love letter for her whenever he was traveling overnight.

Previously on the show “Ellen” in 2013, Urban stated that he doesn’t use emails. Instead, he prefers phone calls and occasionally a text message, which he finds appealing – perhaps just one, a special kind you might understand. However, Ellen got him to admit this reluctantly, playing hard to get.

“Nice, sex texting,” he offered. “I’m a little red right now.”

For the majority of times, they manage to stay composed mainly by staying in close proximity. On occasion, Urban travels by airplane, while Kidman does likewise when geographical barriers such as continents or oceans require traversing.

Nicole Kidman shared with DuJour an instance during Urban’s U.S. tour when he unexpectedly flew from America to London to attend the opening night of her play, Photograph 51. She said, “I tried to reassure him not to come, but he insisted,” she reminisced. “He endured a 10-hour flight just to be with me for one night, then returned to perform his gig. That’s what I call love in action. It’s extraordinary. And I would do the same for him, which is our promise as a couple.

Of course, they aren’t always racking up airline miles. They amass fuel points, too.

She expressed this: “I’ve primarily experienced America from the perspective of a tour bus, and I shared that with InStyle. Keith and I share a nomadic spirit; our homes can be anywhere. Our daughters have adopted this wanderlust as well, so we take them along on our journeys (and occasionally give them significant roles to play).

Ultimately, Kidman expressed that she has a strong connection with rural living. She enjoys being outdoors and values simplicity, a more laid-back lifestyle. She prefers a sense of community over the hustle and bustle of city life. This is what she was accustomed to growing up, and it’s the lifestyle she prefers.

It’s clear at this point that the two individuals, who share similar natures, were perhaps not a perfect fit, although to Urban, they continue to resemble the unusual encounter of Earth and Venus.

Urban stated, ‘My spouse seems otherworldly, as if she’s from a different star.’ She’s heavenly, and I often feel like I was destined to be with her. This is the most eloquent way I can express my feelings towards her and our relationship.
