Inside Out 2 Just Delivered One of the Biggest Disney+ Debuts of All Time

As a dedicated fan who grew up watching Pixar masterpieces and still holds the original Inside Out close to my heart, I must say that the sequel has truly outdone itself! The sheer scale of its success both on the big screen and on Disney+ is nothing short of astonishing. It’s like Riley’s emotions took over the world with their captivating storytelling and relatable characters.

In 2024, Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out” sequel reigned supreme at the box office, not only claiming the title of the year’s top-grossing film but also establishing itself as the highest-earning animated movie ever (excluding 2019’s “The Lion King”). Given its immense cinematic success, it’s hardly shocking that “Inside Out 2” is breaking records in the streaming realm as well.

On Monday, it was revealed that “Inside Out 2” had the second largest five-day premiere on Disney+’s streaming service, surpassed only by “Encanto” in 2021. Notably, however, “Inside Out 2” was the most viewed film on Disney+ in regions such as Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.

As a devoted Disney enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that, since its premiere on Disney+ last Wednesday, “Inside Out 2” has garnered an impressive 30.5 million views worldwide! This strong showing suggests that the film will have a long and prosperous life on our home screens. It’s worth mentioning that a few years back, “Encanto” managed to make a significant impact in the streaming realm despite its modest box office performance due to theaters being closed for much of 2020. After its Christmas debut, “Encanto” became a global sensation on streaming platforms, demonstrating the immense power of Disney’s digital content!

What’s Next for Inside Out?

Due to the massive triumph of “Inside Out 2” at the box office and streaming platforms, fans are naturally curious about Disney and Pixar’s future plans for the series. While many are speculating about “Inside Out 3”, a spinoff is actually set to arrive first, and it’s slated for release soon.

The television series “Dream Productions,” hailing from the universe of “Inside Out,” is set to debut on Disney+. This show takes place within the timeframe between the original film and its sequel, without introducing new characters such as Anxiety. Instead, it delves into the section within Riley’s mind responsible for generating her dreams, with “Dream Productions” premiering on December 11th on Disney+.

In the upcoming season of “Dream Productions,” we’ll see the familiar faces of Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Kensington Tallman, Lewis Black, Tony Hale, and Liza Lapira rejoining the crew. Joining them are new additions to the franchise, Paula Pell, Richard Ayoade, Maya Rudolph, and Ally Maki. The series is penned by Mike Jones and produced by Jaclyn Simon.

Regarding another “Inside Out” movie from Disney and Pixar, they haven’t made any formal announcements about it so far, but it hasn’t been ruled out either.

In his conversation with Fandango this year, Pete Docter (director at Pixar) expressed a sentiment that the tiny fraction of the world we’ve explored in Inside Out represents only a small percentage, with much more left undiscovered. Essentially, he emphasized that there are numerous possibilities and ideas from both the first and second movies that didn’t fit the story or thematic elements, leaving room for future creative exploration.
