As I delve into the world of these talented individuals who have graced our screens with their captivating performances, it is truly fascinating to observe the ebb and flow of their careers. Just like that, NCIS has been on for 21 years.
Since 2003, I’ve been hooked on this CBS series, NCIS, that follows the investigative exploits of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. It has consistently ranked among the most-viewed scripted shows on television, defying external challenges like cord-cutting and a dynamic entertainment industry, as well as internal turbulence such as significant cast changes.
Before Mark Harmon left in 2021, Pauley Perrette’s departure stood out as the most dramatic one. She was the beloved forensics expert Abby Sciuto since the show first began.
Previously, actors like Michael Weatherly had transitioned to different roles before her, but nothing compared to the tense departure of Perrette in May 2018, which ignited a puzzle that remains unsolved to this day.
To put it in my own words, it wasn’t a shock when she left. You see, Perrette – the actress who’s now living a life beyond the spotlight – had announced back in October 2017 that season 15 would be her swan song. I, as a devoted fan, was just following along on this exciting journey of hers.
In the spirit of transparency and to avoid misinterpretations, I chose to break the news myself on Twitter back in April 2018. The decision for Abby to depart was not just a sensational plot twist for television; it carried a deeper significance.
Even though it was during the start of NCIS’s 14th season in 2016, she expressed her gratitude every day by saying, “I am constantly overwhelmed with feelings of gratitude,” and added on Hollywood Today Live that she was “extremely happy” and couldn’t believe she got to play Abby Sciutto. In simpler terms, she had been feeling incredibly grateful since the start of the NCIS season in 2016, expressing her happiness and amazement at being able to portray Abby Sciutto on Hollywood Today Live.
When questioned about the limited number of Emmy nominations the show had received (which was three at the time, and hasn’t changed since), the actress expressed her preference for spending any evening at home with her dogs, holding a beer and knowing that she has money in the bank, over being “dressed formally, feeling uncomfortable under the sun, and receiving an award from someone.
After departing from the series, it appeared that Perrette held a distinct perspective about the things she was parting ways with. A week following the broadcast of her last episode, the actress made it clear that she was tired of the various online theories trying to justify her choice to step down.
In a tweet on May 12, 2018, Perrette stated, “I chose not to speak out about the incident, but there are tabloids spreading false stories about me. If you believe these stories, I kindly ask that you leave me alone as you don’t truly know me.” (Apologies needed, friends.)
The self-described “Twitter-aholic” continued in the early hours of May 13, “Maybe I’m wrong for not ‘spilling the beans’ Telling the story, THE TRUTH. I feel I have to protect my crew, jobs and so many people. But at what cost? I.don’t know. Just know, I’m trying to do the right thing, but maybe silence isn’t the right thing about crime. I’m… Just… ?” Then, 20 minutes later, “There is a ‘machine’ keeping me silent, and feeding FALSE stories about me. A very rich, very powerful publicity ‘machine’. No morals, no obligation to truth, and I’m just left here, reading the lies, trying to protect my crew. Trying to remain calm. He did it.”
Two hours passed, and she remarked, “For as long as I can remember, I’ve been advocating for anti-bullying initiatives. However, it’s become painfully clear to me, especially considering the MTopMob incident, that if you’re compelled to attend school or work, such behavior is truly appalling. I chose to leave. I endured multiple physical attacks. Now, I fully grasp the severity of the situation. Stay safe at all costs. Nothing is worth compromising your safety. Reveal your struggles to someone.
CBS Television Studios promptly addressed the concerns raised in the heavy tweets, telling TopMob News in a statement, “Pauley Perrette had an exceptional stint on NCIS, and we will miss her dearly. More than a year ago, Pauley shared a workplace issue with us. We treated it seriously and collaborated with her to find a resolution. We are dedicated to maintaining a secure work environment across all our productions.
Later, Perrette expressed her gratitude on Twitter, saying, “I’d like to thank my studio and network, CBS. They’ve always treated me well and stood by me.
Viewers paying close attention to the details didn’t miss the fact that throughout the entire season, Abby and Gibbs, who is the Special Agent in Charge, never appeared together on screen. In her farewell, Abby wrote a note to Gibbs instead.
Approximately ten days later, The Wrap revealed that a disagreement between Perrette and Harmon emerged in October 2016 when she confronted him over his pet dog, who had reportedly bitten a crew member requiring stitches. It was stated by Harmon’s lawyer to The Wrap that the dog did not return to the set afterwards.
Following our epic clash on set, I’ve learned from an inside scoop that she would grace us with her performance on specific days, while he would deliver his magic on others. Yet, despite our schedules not overlapping, we managed to create a phenomenal show together – it was just a scheduling quirk that kept us apart during the filming process.
Ultimately, whatever hastened her exit, Perrette sounded genuinely sorrowful about leaving
It deeply saddens me to contemplate a world without Abby, as I expressed to CBS News in April 2018. The thought brings me great sorrow. I’m still mourning…I often find myself shedding tears daily on my commute to work and on my way home at some point. Then, I take a deep breath and tell myself, ‘Alright,’ knowing it will get better.
She remained just as proud as before of her intelligent and self-assured personality, whose impact on girls aspiring to study math and science came to be known as the “Abby effect.” Perrette further remarked, “Abby turned science into something cool, accessible, and appealing for young women. Not only did she encourage it, but she made it seem exciting, fun, and enticing.
Over multiple seasons, she consistently ranked highest among favorite female prime-time television stars. Her final appearance was a fitting conclusion as well. However, just before announcing her departure, there seemed to be significant personal challenges affecting the actress.
Prior to the unfortunate dog-related incident that became public knowledge, Gary Glasberg, the showrunner of NCIS, had tragically passed away unexpectedly in September 2016. This event left the entire production team mourning deeply. Perrette expressed this collective grief on Twitter with the statement, “Our hearts are shattered.
In January 2017, it seems she became highly motivated by political issues, her father’s hospitalization, her dog’s recovery from surgery, and criticism from certain quarters that celebrities should confine themselves to their own sphere, all while watching the SAG Awards.
She tweeted, “Do you believe my thoughts don’t count just because I’m an actor?” She added that she had thoughts when she worked at a car dealership, Taco Bell, as a bartender, and as a cook assistant in a boat with a foot of dirty dish water… Her (very conservative) father is currently in the hospital and she’s anxious because she cares for him deeply, politics don’t change her affection towards him. She’s his little girl, filled with fear at this moment. Her dog is undergoing surgery and rehabilitation, making her even more anxious. Her boss passed away suddenly, and his memorial service took place today, and she misses him dearly and it’s tough. Three of her friends have died this year.
Perrette added, “Does this seem like ‘CELEBRITY PROBLEMS?'”
Hailing from New Orleans in 1969, Perrette completed her high school education in Georgia. During her final year, she was honored as the Homecoming Queen and received accolades for ‘Best Personality’ and ‘Most Amiable’.
Instead of pursuing a career as an FBI agent after studying sociology, psychology, and criminology in college, she eventually relocated to New York City where she took on various temporary roles such as bartending, while waiting for the opportune moment to meet a director. This encounter then opened doors to numerous commercial projects.
On CBS This Morning in 2015, Perrette called her acting career a “total accident.”
She eventually settled in L.A., and soon after made her television debut on an ‘ABC Afterschool Special’. Later, she secured a recurring role in the highly-regarded drama series ‘Murder One’, created by Stephen Bochco. Although ‘Murder One’ only ran for a second season, Perrette continued to advance in her career.
Eventually, recurring appearances on both “Frasier” and “The Drew Carey Show” paved the way for Perrette to secure the role as Jennifer Love Hewitt’s eccentric apartment manager in the spin-off series of “Party of Five,” titled “The Time of Your Life.
That job didn’t last, either, but Perrette—whose raven-dyed hair (she’s a natural blonde), tattoos and subtly raspy voice came to signify the smart/sassy/sarcastic supporting role—was only a couple years away from a two-episode stint as Abby on the CBS military legal drama J.A.G. The rest is synergistic history.
Perrette gleamed on CBS’s The Early Show in 2011, expressing that “our journey has been steadily climbing since the start,” and it “continues to thrive and expand. It’s simply amazing, and everyone involved with our series adores it. We’re just filled with gratitude and joy. This job is a dream come true.
She modestly dismissed the notion that the series’ recent success was solely her doing, stating instead, “It’s not just about me. It’s about everyone involved – their combined efforts in creating the show, as well as our shared passion for it and the fun we’re all having during the process.
Reflecting on her character’s influence in 2018, she pondered to USA Today, “I believe, after so many years, an older generation might perceive someone with tattoos not as a criminal but rather as a scientist.
In their private life, Perrette got engaged to Thomas Arklie, a former British Royal Marine and aspiring actor, on Christmas Day 2011. On several occasions, she expressed that they would not marry until same-sex marriages were legally acknowledged. This was a common stance among celebrities during that time.
On June 26, 2015, when the U.S. Supreme Court declared the Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional, opening the door for same-sex couples to marry in every state, Perrette was among several famous couples who saw their path to marriage become less complicated.
For the past four years, Perrette, an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, had been actively working towards a federal marriage-equality law. The following Friday felt incredibly strange to her. “My life as an activist for civil rights and a straight ally has been about marching, speaking, donating, rallying, holding protest signs,” she explained to FOX411 a month later. “It’s been about the rhythm of march, speak, march, speak, rally, hold posters, repeat. And then, suddenly, it was all over. It felt so odd.
She mentioned that several of her friends who are gay were tying the knot, but she hadn’t contemplated her own situation just yet.
As a lifestyle expert, I find myself reflecting on the various advantages marriage offers. For my partner and me, this union brings unique perks such as shared insurance plans and other benefits. It struck me that numerous same-sex couples who have been together for 25 years or more could also reap these rewards. Thus, embracing this new chapter in our lives fills me with excitement.
By that time, she had become fully cognizant of the drawbacks, having been married to rocker Francis Shivers, known as Coyote Shivers, from 2000 until their separation in 2004. Their divorce was finalized in 2006, but she obtained a restraining order against him earlier, in 2005.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it this way: Based on court records reported by the New York Post, the restraining order against Shivers was initially issued due to a history of emotional abuse and was renewed numerous times. However, in an unfortunate turn of events, Shivers was arrested in April 2012 for violating the order when he and his wife Mayra unknowingly dined at the same Los Angeles restaurant as his ex-wife. In a court filing, Shivers accused his ex-wife of using restraining orders as a tool for harassment.
For quite some time now, I’ve consistently asserted that such an event would unfold – in legal records and police statements, as Shivers admitted to the Post back in 2013, with imprisonment imminent for his transgression.
In 2017, Perrette spoke with 48 Hours for a special on stalking without directly mentioning her ex-husband by name. She stated, “I have a permanent restraining order, yet they can only do so much. The main issue we face today is that the stalking laws haven’t been updated since the advent of the Internet. This is absurd because many stalkers utilize the Internet as their primary tool. We need to make significant changes, particularly in regards to Internet stalking laws.
2008 saw Shivers labeled as a “persistent litigant” by California state authorities, which essentially signifies that he was found to be exploiting the legal system for harassment or manipulation purposes. In an interview with Fox News, he referred to Perrette as a “habitual fabricator of false accusations.
In addition, Perrette was for a short time engaged to NCIS camera operator Michael Bosman, whom she began dating in 2005 during her divorce process. However, she never made it to the altar with Arklie.
She told CBS News in April 2018 that she had tried it but it wasn’t for her when asked about her love life. When questioned if she was happier since this realization, she responded that she was delighted and considered the time she took to realize “This isn’t necessary. I don’t need a boyfriend, husband, girlfriend, or any label.” Instead, she does whatever she pleases, and she believes that independence is cool.
Instead, her home was brimming with affectionate four-legged companions – her rescued dogs being ever-present as she sat for an interview with CBS News prior to Abby’s last episode airing.
She enthusiastically declared, “They are absolutely my children!” She continued, “Every aspect of my life revolves around them. Whenever someone asks, ‘Do you want to go out?’, I respond, ‘No, because that would divert me from my beloved pets!’
Simultaneously, notoriety presented both pros and cons for Perrette. She constantly thanked her supporters, yet she wasn’t fond of the attention that accompanies celebrity life.
In 2011, she shared with CBS News that everyone is friendly and enthusiastic around Abby, saying, “I’m not just any ordinary person when it comes to Abby on a typical weekend.” Perrette went on to say, with a smile, “It’s truly a remarkable occurrence, no doubt about it.” She admitted that she once tried to use subtle strategies to avoid being recognized, but “those tactics no longer work. The cat’s out of the bag.
By the time she departed from NCIS, her tone suggested growing weariness about the topic. In April 2018, she expressed it as, “It feels like a product, and it’s quite dehumanizing. I believe I deserve some personal space now. Perhaps I should just stay home and attend church.
She pointed out, “To make things clear, pursuing celebrities is not appropriate in a church setting. Just thought I’d mention that. Chasing after celebrities should be avoided in hospitals, restrooms, and churches alike.
Despite the circumstances, she valued her fans so highly that she wouldn’t alter her iconic hairstyle, not even for her own life.
After about ten years of doing hair dye at home, Perrette developed an allergy to PPD (P-Phenylenediamine). Initially, this only led to scalp irritation, but it can potentially be life-threatening if the dye routine isn’t altered. To inform her fans about this issue, she chose to share this important information.
In 2015, Abby revealed on The Queen Latifah Show that she used black hairspray to maintain her signature look. Now, if she touches her head, it appears as though she’s been mining coal, she joked. However, Abby claimed that the world wasn’t yet prepared for a blonde Abby.
Perrette confessed her admiration for Abby, stating she adores her so deeply and aspires to be like her when older. She went on to say that there’s something extraordinary about the character, resembling an anime figure in a way. Abby has remained consistent in appearance over time, and altering this could seem odd or strange, just as giving Charlie Brown a full head of hair would feel unusual, wouldn’t it?” (She eventually discovered coloring technology that seems to outsmart her.)
It’s clear that Perrette’s compassion extends beyond acting: She penned the song “Beautiful Child” to aid initiatives addressing suicide among LGBTQ+ adolescents. She also established scholarship programs at Valdosta State University, Georgia, and New York’s John Jay College of Criminal Science for students interested in forensics studies. In 2015, she collaborated on the cookbook “Donna Bell’s Bakeshop“, a tribute to the New York bakery bearing her late mother’s name, which opened posthumously after her passing from breast cancer in 2002.
Perrette shared on CBS This Morning that her mother was an exceptional person, but she passed away too soon. She expressed that losing a mom, regardless of age, makes one feel like a foundling. It’s a strange, disorganized feeling, she suggested. For those fortunate enough not to have experienced this loss yet, my heart goes out to them.
In November 2015, Perrette underwent a physical attack on a Hollywood street by a homeless individual. Although she was deeply affected, she chose to use this experience as a platform to discuss and tackle larger societal problems that were prevalent at the time.
Tonight marked a significant shift in my life. I’m at a loss for words, but it’s clear that we require comprehensive mental health services. We must provide housing and aid to the homeless. We should back our law enforcement officers. It’s crucial to avoid walking alone. I myself need time to recover.
The individual was taken into custody, later indicted for issuing a threatening statement with criminal intent and using force to confine another person unlawfully.
In a piece for Motto published a few months ago, Perrette expressed her deep empathy. That night, her tears were for him. She had gazed into his eyes, but there was nothing in them – it appeared as though his spirit and humanity were absent. It seemed he was homeless and lacked resources, a result of our society’s neglect towards the mentally ill and homeless population.
She added, “Indeed, I find it within me to forgive him. What I feel is not resentment, but sorrow. You see, he wasn’t aware of my identity, nor his own. He’s quite lost, without a home, and requires assistance.
In an interview with People back in December 2016, I shared, “There was a whirlwind of feelings and emotions, but looking back, it seems like if that event were to unfold anywhere in the cosmos, it was meant for me. There’s something about my background – working with homeless individuals, helping those struggling with mental health – that makes me believe this instance, this crucial de-escalation, was destined for me at that very moment.
Yet, the actress showed apprehension back in February 2018 when her attacker, previously confined to a mental health facility run by the state, regained his freedom.
She told Fox 11 News, “This event has irrevocably altered my life. I no longer feel safe stepping outside my home. It’s quite plausible that the next news I receive about him could be of him harming another woman.
Meanwhile, she was preparing to depart from a location that had served as her secondary home for a span of fifteen years, while various events transpired around her.
However, even though there was a possibility that Abby might have been nearby and could have entered through an open door, Perrette made clear in June 2019 that she had no intentions of coming back to NCIS, period.
I won’t be returning, not now or ever, if you don’t mind understanding. The thought of Harmon causing distress again is something I dread and often haunts my sleep. But fear not! A fresh and joyful project awaits, one that promises a delightful experience for all!
At the time she was returning to CBS, though, as the star of the sitcom Broke.
In response to questions from reporters following the 2019 Television Critics Association summer press tour panel, CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl stated that he couldn’t comment on the specific issues she was discussing in her tweets. However, he did mention that she had approached them with a workplace concern a few years ago. They promptly investigated the matter and managed to resolve it to everyone’s satisfaction.

The show ran for just one season, yet following the announcement of its termination, Perrette expressed on Twitter that the experience was therapeutic for her.
In her post from May 2020, she expressed that the show not only reaffirmed her trust in both people and the entertainment industry, but also shared her profound gratitude for collaborating with such exceptional cast and crew members. She stated that they had a healing impact on her, brought about change in her life, and ultimately made her feel complete. Her overall sentiment was one of immense gratitude and blessing.
To this day, Perrette’s last performance on screen has been her final acting role, and she’s openly stated that she currently has no intentions of taking on another acting project.
The 55-year-old said in an interview with HELLO! on October 1, “Although I appreciate the advantages that [acting] has brought me, I am no longer the same person. I want to embrace every aspect of my life—the positive, the negative, and even the hardships—and be true to myself. It takes a lot of bravery for me to admit this, but it’s honestly how I feel.

Over a year ago, there were whispers about the actor leaving the popular Paramount drama after four and a half seasons unexpectedly. In June 2024, he officially announced that he wouldn’t be returning for the fifth and final season of the series.
Following 19 years portraying Meredith Grey, Ellen Pompeo appeared for her final time as a main character in the ABC drama during the February 23rd episode.

In a recent update, it was disclosed that Henry Cavill, known for his role in “Batman vs. Superman”, will be departing from Netflix’s fantasy series after its third season. Interestingly, Liam Hemsworth has been chosen to take over the role of Geralt starting from season four, and possibly continue beyond that point.
Last October on Instagram, Cavill expressed that his journey as Geralt of Rivia was a mix of monsters and thrilling experiences. Unfortunately, he will be retiring the medallion and sheathing his swords at the end of Season 4.
2022 saw the departure of original cast member Jesse Lee Soffer from his long-cherished role as Detective Jay Halstead, bidding farewell to the character he had portrayed for a decade.
In his statement following his last appearance on the NBC procedural on October 5th, Soffer expressed that crafting this weekly hour drama has been a heartfelt endeavor for everyone associated with the show. He is always going to take pride in his tenure as Detective Jay Halstead.

Back in August of 2021, news broke out that Emily VanCamp put away her medical stethoscope permanently, as she had parted ways with the medical drama series “The Resident” on Fox.
In the role of a devoted follower, I am sharing that one of the enchanted sisters, Macy, portrayed by Madeleine Mantock, is bidding farewell. This decision comes as we approach season four of the CW’s Charmed reboot. Madeleine expressed her gratitude for the understanding and support from the producers as she embarks on this new chapter in her career.
It turns out that Elizabeth Keen won’t uncover Raymond Reddington’s true identity, as Megan Boone decided to depart from NBC’s The Blacklist at the end of season eight. Since then, her character was written off before she could discover the contents of the letter that would have disclosed all secrets. Boone symbolized the conclusion of Liz’s adventure with an Instagram post where she described it as a “dream.
In the second season of “Bridgerton”, the role of a duke will be vacant because Rege-Jean Page, who became the breakout star and caused a stir among fans with his departure from the show, won’t be coming back. However, fans can take solace in knowing that Anthony Bridgerton, played by Jonathan Bailey, will now take center stage instead. Meanwhile, Page is moving on to other projects, including a Netflix movie titled “The Grey Man”, where he stars alongside Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling, so we’ll get to see him again soon.
In the CW drama, Rose took on the lead role of Batwoman, also known as Kate Kane. She initially appeared in a crossover event within the Arrowverse in 2018 and starred for one season, becoming the first lesbian superhero to spearhead her own show. A significant TV scene revealed that Batwoman is a lesbian. However, Rose departed from the role just two days after the season finale, and her part was later filled by Javicia Leslie as Ryan Wilder, who will assume leadership of the Batcave in season two.
Later on in season two, Kate got a bit of a face swap and returned played by Wallis Day.
America Ferrera chose to part ways with Superstore at the conclusion of its fifth season, which left Cloud 9 without a manager and the show without its main character. However, due to the pandemic, she appeared in the first two episodes of season six before the series was ultimately concluded as final. In the series finale, she made a return to provide Amy and Jonah (Ben Feldman) with the happy ending they deserved.
In the final episode of the fourth season of the Syfy series, titled “The Magicians,” Ralph’s character Quentin embarked on a mission to rescue Eliot (Hale Appleman), which he successfully accomplished. However, in doing so, Quentin made the ultimate sacrifice and did not reappear for the fifth and concluding season of the show. Despite the series frequently involving deceased characters due to its name being “The Magicians,” Ralph himself was absent during the fifth season.
Ahead of the final season, Arrow‘s Rickards announced her exit in a poem of sorts.

After lengthy contract discussions, Cohan bid farewell to “The Walking Dead,” and her character Maggie Greene was absent following a few episodes in season nine. Producers had hoped she would reappear in some form for season 10. When her TV show on ABC, “Whiskey Cavalier,” ended prematurely, the producers’ wish came true. Cohan re-emerged in the 16th episode of this season, which aired in October 2020.
Immediately following the departures of Lauren Cohan and Andrew Lincoln from the zombie drama, Gurira also announced her exit. She had been a part of the AMC series since its third season as Michonne, who uses a katana. Her final appearance was in an episode that aired in March 2020.
In the first season, Sheridan was a frequent cast member, while in the second season she became a regular series character, portraying the legendary figure Alexis Carrington. Prior to the start of season three, she disclosed her intention to leave the CW’s reboot, so she could spend time with her ailing mother.
Eads exited the CBS remake in 2019, midway through season three. At the time, he expressed his desire to leave and spend more time with his family.
The TV show “Lethal Weapon,” starring Fox, has often experienced cast departures. For instance, Clayne Crawford was let go from the series following the second season, while his on-screen partner Wayans announced his intention to leave after completing the 13-episode third season. In his own words, “I will be leaving the show in December when we finish the initial 13 episodes. I’m not sure about their plans, but that’s what I’ve decided.” He added, “I’m a 58-year-old diabetic and I’m working 16-hour days… Murtaugh said I’m too old for this.
They weren’t required to create a backup plan since the series ended after its third season had concluded.
