In the latest installment of “Doctor Who”, some viewers were left puzzled by the character of Poppy (played by Sienna-Robyn Mavanga-Phipps), who was considered the Doctor’s daughter by him. Why was this the case, and what led to Susan (portrayed by Carole Ann Ford), the Doctor’s granddaughter from the early series, making a brief appearance only for her character to seemingly be overlooked later on?
According to internet personality Daniel Richtman, who claims to have insider knowledge, an alternate ending was originally planned for the characters Poppy and Susan in the show. Instead of the complex finale where the Doctor sacrifices himself to save Poppy but later learns she’s not his daughter, it was supposedly intended that Poppy and Susan would be seen together in a final scene with the Doctor and their companions at a party. In this version, Susan would then turn to baby Poppy and say, “Let’s go, Mum.
In the series, the subject of the Doctor’s offspring and Susan’s family background had never been explored. If showrunner Russell T. Davies were to delve into this unexplored territory, it would mark a groundbreaking move, something no one had ever attempted before. Significantly, as per Richtman, this innovative twist was intended to seamlessly transition into season three of Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor tenure – however, that third season is currently uncertain due to Disney+ opting out of further production, although the BBC may still be interested.
It appears that the conclusion for Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor is somewhat ambiguous, while Poppy’s narrative remains unclear due to Disney+ not renewing season three. The ending seems incomplete and raises questions, especially concerning Belinda’s character arc, which concludes with her becoming a mother to a child that wasn’t originally hers, creating a sense of dissatisfaction or unease.
Doctor Who Doesn’t Know When It Will Return
It appears that the fans of “Doctor Who” were taken aback as there’s no announcement for a new season yet, and sadly, neither a Christmas nor New Year special has been confirmed. However, the last season ended on a cliffhanger. Interestingly, there’s no news about the return of Billie Piper, who played Rose Tyler alongside the Ninth and Tenth Doctors.
Some viewers express concerns that the show might be excessively reminiscing about its past and neglecting to focus on new developments, given that Ncuti Gatwa replaced David Tennant as the Doctor after three specials featuring his return. They may fear that the program is overly reliant on past achievements rather than propelling forward. If Piper’s portrayal of the Sixteenth Doctor does indeed materialize, there might be a possibility for her to encounter Susan again in future episodes.
