Intergalactic is Still Changing and Evolving During Development – Creative Director

The upcoming game from Naughty Dog, titled “Intergalactic,” is undergoing modifications even during its development process, as confirmed by Neil Druckmann, the studio’s head and creative director. In a recent discussion on Sony’s Creator to Creator series, Druckmann expressed that the specifics of how “Intergalactic” will unfold are still fluid.

Druckmann shared that although he has a broad concept of what he envisions for the final product of the game “Intergalactic“, given that the game is still in development, it’s constantly “growing and adapting” as the creative process unfolds.

Druckmann remarked again that these matters are intricate, vast, and involve numerous individuals. He expressed that, even though he has a concept and a notion, the final outcome is still uncertain and continues to shift and adapt as they work on it.

Druckmann has previously discussed “Intergalactic,” characterizing it as featuring the most profound gameplay in Naughty Dog’s entire history. Although he didn’t disclose many specifics regarding this upcoming game, he did hint at how it will leverage all the knowledge Naughty Dog has gained throughout their game development journey.

Druckmann shared that “Intergalactic” maintains the Naughty Dog legacy of crafting a profound, character-centric adventure that tugs at the heartstrings. Our storytelling aspirations are matched by our drive for innovative gameplay. This game will feature the most intricate gameplay ever developed by Naughty Dog, building upon lessons from our past series and surpassing anything we’ve attempted before in terms of gameplay depth.

In December 2024, during The Game Awards, the game titled “Intergalactic” was introduced with a trailer. Although the trailer didn’t reveal much about the gameplay, it did give us an idea of the game’s overall themes and that it falls under the science fiction genre. At present, the game is being developed for the PS5, but there’s no scheduled release date as of now.

As a captivated admirer, I’d express it like this: In the thrilling game called “Intergalactic”, I find myself assuming the role of protagonist Jordan A. Mun. An unexpected turn of events leaves me stranded on a distant world named Sempiria. For centuries, this planet has been shrouded in mystery, with minimal attempts to uncover its secrets. My mission is not just about escaping from this mysterious planet, but also breaking free from its gravitational pull.

Recently, Shuhei Yoshida, a former executive at PlayStation, disclosed that the team had abandoned their project for The Last of Us Online. Instead, they chose to channel their energy into Intergalactic. Furthermore, he shared that he got a chance to play an early version of The Last of Us Online and found it impressive, referring to it as “excellent”.

According to Yoshida, the concept for “The Last of Us Online” originated with Naughty Dog, but they were keen on bringing it to life. However, Bungie shared insights about the demands of creating live service games, and Naughty Dog recognized that if they pursued this project, they wouldn’t be able to work on “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.” This was due to a lack of planning ahead.

Although Naughty Dog and Sony haven’t shared much about “Intergalactic” yet, let me share with you ten fascinating insights we’ve gathered about the forthcoming title.
