As a longtime Naughty Dog enthusiast who has witnessed the studio’s evolution from Crash Bandicoot to Jak & Daxter and beyond, I find myself intrigued by their latest announcement – Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Having grown up with the adventures of Jak, Daxter, and Nathan Drake, it’s fascinating to see elements reminiscent of Jak 4 in this new sci-fi venture.
It seems like the latest game from Naughty Dog, titled “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet“, may be drawing inspiration from an abandoned concept for “Jak 4“. Known for their extensive contributions to gaming, Naughty Dog initially made a name for themselves with the iconic platformer, “Crash Bandicoot”, which was a standout title on the PS1 and played a significant role in the studio’s rise to fame. Later, they transitioned to a more family-friendly series called Jak & Daxter. As the studio evolved, they started exploring mature themes, with “Uncharted” marking the beginning of this shift, although it still catered to younger audiences. Over time, they delved deeper into darker narratives, culminating in the adult-oriented storylines of the “The Last of Us” franchise.
Though Uncharted and The Last of Us have made Naughty Dog famous, some long-time fans yearn for a return to their original style. At one time, Jak 4 was being developed by Naughty Dog with the team splitting during the production of Uncharted 3. One half worked on Nathan Drake’s next adventure while the other aimed to create Jak 4. Regrettably, they discovered the direction they were heading wasn’t successful and decided it would be better to put the project aside and focus on a new concept, The Last of Us. It seems Naughty Dog has moved away from Jak and Daxter forever, but that doesn’t mean they can’t draw inspiration from them instead.
Following ten years of exclusively working on Uncharted and The Last of Us, Naughty Dog unveiled plans for a completely fresh concept at this week’s Game Awards – introducing the development of a new sci-fi series titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Over the past four years, the studio has been dedicated to creating this franchise. The game revolves around a bounty hunter embarking on a perilous mission on an arid planet. This new project looks captivating and appears to be quite distinct from Naughty Dog’s previous work, with a strong focus on melee combat as opposed to gunplay.
It seems clear from the reveal trailer that Naughty Dog is venturing beyond typical third-person shooter territory, as their focus appears to shift towards swordplay rather than guns. Fans of Jak & Daxter, particularly those on Twitter at @eco_community, have spotted a link between “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet” and the proposed “Jak 4”. Towards the end of the trailer, a massive, intimidating robot is seen battling our main character. This robot shares a striking resemblance with a design from the concept art of “Jak 4”. Whether this similarity is mere coincidence or not remains to be seen, but it’s hard to ignore such a strong resemblance.
It’s possible that since Jak 4 was moving towards a more grounded sci-fi style, Naughty Dog might draw inspiration from the aesthetic of Jak 4 to create a new project. This is just speculation, but given the high costs and lengthy production time of video games, reusing elements from an existing project can be a strategic financial choice.
Currently, we’re unsure about when Naughty Dog’s game “Intergalactic” will be released. Although fans might anticipate a 2025 launch, it’s important to consider that development on the game didn’t start until after June 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic when everyone was working from home. This could have presented numerous production hurdles and potentially slowed down the project. Additionally, Naughty Dog is also confirmed to be developing “The Last of Us Part 3,” which is slated for the PS5 at some point in the future. Given these circumstances, it seems improbable that “Intergalactic” will launch next year, especially considering the fall season already appears quite crowded with the planned release of “Grand Theft Auto VI.
It seems quite possible that Naughty Dog might grant Rockstar some space and focus more time on perfecting their upcoming title, Intergalactic, aiming for a 2026 launch. Fingers crossed, we won’t have to wait too long before getting glimpses of the game prior to its release. For now, all we can do is stay patient and observe. The online community has shown strong reactions towards the appearance of Intergalactic‘s protagonist, causing Naughty Dog to disable comments on the YouTube trailer. Whether this feedback will influence the game’s rollout remains to be seen.
