Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet Has “the Deepest Gameplay in Naughty Dog’s History”, Inspired by Akira and Cowboy Bebop

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for narrative-driven games that offer immersive worlds and deep gameplay mechanics, I must say the announcement of Naughty Dog’s new IP, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, has piqued my interest significantly.

At The Game Awards, Naughty Dog, the studio behind Uncharted and The Last of Us, unveiled its first new intellectual property (IP) in over a decade – Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. A cinematic trailer debuted, providing glimpses into the game’s sci-fi setting and introducing its bounty hunter protagonist, portrayed by Tati Gabrielle. Further details on the title were shared by creative director and studio head Neil Druckmann in an update on the PlayStation Blog.

In the vast expanse of the cosmos, our hero Jordan A. Mun finds himself marooned on an isolated planet named Sempiria, a place shrouded in mystery as it’s said to have vanished without trace for centuries. No one who has attempted to reach it has ever come back. The task now falls to Jordan: he must unravel the enigma and become the first in 600 years to break free from Sempiria’s gravitational hold.

In a conversation with The New York Times, Druckmann disclosed that this game takes place in an alternate reality of our world. Here, space travel progressed swiftly starting from 1986. It’s no secret to those who watched the trailer that the game is influenced by “Akira” and “Cowboy Bebop”.

In Druckmann’s words, the tale is “fairly bold.” The narrative revolves around a made-up religion and explores the consequences of placing trust in various establishments, as stated by Druckmann.

In simpler terms, “Intergalactic” is said to offer an intense, character-focused adventure filled with emotion, as per Naughty Dog. Regarding gameplay, the studio assures players that it will feature the most in-depth play mechanics in their history, leveraging lessons from past franchises and aiming to surpass anything they’ve attempted before.

The intriguing title, “Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet”, is being crafted for the PS5, but a release date remains undisclosed at this time. This captivating game has been under development since 2020, with approximately 250 employees from Naughty Dog contributing to its creation, along with external collaborators.
