Internal Death Stranding 2 Reviews Are Tracking Much Higher Than the First Game, But Kojima Isn’t Pleased

Back in 2019, when Death Stranding debuted on PS4, it was hard to predict its reception, but the initial release garnered an 82 score. The Director’s Cut for the PS5 refined things a bit and earned an 85.

As reported by a recent interview of Hideo Kojima in Edge magazine (through VGC), the complete PS5 sequel has been receiving much better feedback from test reviewers. It seems that Sony is satisfied with these results, but Kojima himself hopes it will stir up a little more debate among players.

Kojima clarifies that he takes feedback and criticism on aspects like controls and camera angles into account, but the narrative and themes of his game stay consistent, irrespective of what critics suggest. Essentially, while he encourages players to engage with his game, he doesn’t aim to please everyone in terms of content creation.

As a gamer, I’ve been part of numerous test sessions for the original game, and here’s what I discovered – out of every ten players, four found it utterly captivating, while six considered it a complete dud. Personally, I believe that’s a fair balance. However, when it comes to Death Stranding 2: On the Beach playtests, everyone seems to be singing its praises.

As a creative enthusiast myself, I can relate when Kojima expresses his desire to steer clear of mass-market appeal and aim for controversy instead. After all, it’s about crafting unique experiences that challenge the status quo rather than replicating what’s already out there. Yet, I understand his responsibility towards his studio, team, and finances – no one wants to see a failure. However, the essence of my passion lies in pushing boundaries and creating something fresh and original.

Hideo Kojima consistently breaks new ground in video game creation, starting with the bold move of making Raiden the main character in Metal Gear Solid 2. Each installment of the Metal Gear Solid series has been distinct since then, and Death Stranding represented a notable shift from his previous projects. At first glance, Death Stranding 2 appears to be Kojima’s most sequel-like work so far. But we have no doubt he still holds plenty of surprises in store for us.
