The 1990s and 2000s were an extraordinary era for animation in both film and television, earning their fame through a combination of exceptional art, compelling narratives, and, let’s not forget, their unique, offbeat charm. Shows created during this animation boom are still fondly remembered today, whether it’s with a peculiar sense of nostalgia – be it the revulsion from the gross-out trend or the longing from the flashy “Xtreme” Y2K era – or something else entirely. Regardless, there’s no arguing that this period gave rise to some of the most distinctive shows, even by today’s high standards, or perhaps even more so given today’s standards.
Although numerous shows from the past are often referred to as classics without much question, certain hidden treasures continue to prove their worth in contemporary culture and even transcend their original audience. Interestingly, some have gained cult status beyond their intended generation or demographic. One such timeless gem is the show Invader Zim, which continues to captivate audiences today with its enduring appeal drawing both old and new fans. They eagerly consume media, merchandise, and exclusive behind-the-scenes content related to the series. Fans remain hopeful that a revival of their beloved show will occur someday.
A Little Green Alien Conquering Generational Gaps
Despite the Irkens’ inclination towards planet conquest, their decision to send Zim to invade Earth was actually a means to eliminate an unwanted troublemaker from their home planet. However, oblivious to his leaders’ views on him, Zim aspires to prove himself as a successful invader and rule over Earth. Accompanied by his flawed robot sidekick GIR, Zim adopts the guise of a typical human child to gather information and persistently attempts to execute his elaborate, bizarre plans. Yet, there is one human child who has uncovered Zim’s true identity – Dib. Despite Zim’s frequent failures as his schemes are repeatedly foiled by either Dib or his own ineptitude, the humans’ overall lack of intelligence somehow manages to work in his favor.
In simpler terms, “Invader Zim,” with its humor stemming from peculiar scenarios and offbeat jokes, is often seen as the epitome of the slightly awkward but widely popular and cherished “RAWR XD” era. While Nickelodeon was home to many strange yet successful shows during this time, “Invader Zim” stood out as if it didn’t quite fit in, its style resembling the more bizarre and darker shows on Cartoon Network. Despite this, “Invader Zim” managed to thrive beyond its original broadcast.
Invader Zim Still Invades Pop Culture
In 2001, comic book artist Jhonen Vasquez proposed the concept for “Invader Zim” to Nickelodeon, who were seeking ideas tailored for an older demographic. They immediately took a liking to his initial pitch and greenlit the production of the show. Over its run, which spanned 28 episodes including a pilot, the series eventually encountered decreasing viewership and budget issues, ultimately leading to its termination with six unfinished, broadcast-unseen episodes. Despite this untimely end, “Invader Zim” has since garnered acclaim for its distinctive art style and humor, earning recognition as one of Nickelodeon’s top shows, and receiving seven Annie Award nominations, two Golden Reel Awards, and actually winning an Annie Award, an Emmy, and a World Animation Celebration Award.
Enter the Florpus was released on Netflix in 2019. Over time, official merchandise for this beloved series, including video games, toys, clothing, and accessories, has been produced with strong demand.
Vivienne “Vivzipop” Medrano, the mind behind Hazbin Hotel, has always been an ardent fan of Invader Zim. This passion is evident in her distinctive art style that permeates her successful contemporary series. In fact, she succeeded in recruiting Richard Horvitz, the celebrated voice actor of Zim, to lend his voice to Moxxie in Helluva Boss. As fans continue to gather on relevant social media platforms and forums to express shared enthusiasm, as well as discover new merchandise in pop-culture stores like Hot Topic, the fandom remains vibrant with both seasoned and novice supporters.
Invader Zim can be streamed on Paramount+.
