The third season of “Invincible” has reached its midpoint, and the suspenseful cliffhanger at the halfway mark unveiled a significant secret that the Viltrum Empire has concealed from everyone. Since it was disclosed that Nolan Grayson was sent to Earth with the ultimate goal of conquering it by the Viltrum Empire, there’s been an increasing anticipation about their true power. Viewers have had glimpses of how formidable some of these warriors are as they’ve posed challenges for both Nolan and Mark on multiple occasions, leaving them drained just to survive the encounters.
The persistent dread hanging over everyone regarding the Viltrum Empire stems from the possibility of an enormous army of highly potent warriors, poised to dominate galaxies at will. However, in the final episode of Invincible Season 3, Nolan clarified to Allen that the Viltrum Empire may not be as invincible as people believe. In actuality, they’ve been concealing a secret: their numbers have dropped dramatically, leaving fewer than 50 pure-blooded Viltrumites still alive.
Invincible’s Viltrum Empire Is Smaller Than Expected
In Episode 4 of Season 3, the story resumes with Allen attempting to persuade Nolan to flee and join the uprising against the Viltrum Empire. However, Nolan appears resigned to his impending execution. So, Allen must orchestrate a prison break, resulting in him, Nolan, and a reappearing Battle Beast confronting the two Viltrumite executors dispatched to eliminate Nolan. Yet, there’s an odd twist: after Allen and Nolan begin resisting and defeat the two warriors, Nolan informs them that no reinforcements will be sent to recapture them following the events. It seems the Viltrum Empire is simply unable to spare the manpower for it.
Nolan confides in Allen that there are merely 50 pure-blooded Viltrumites still living, a fact that aligns with the evidence we’ve gathered about their planet. It appears they have eliminated each other to ensure only the most robust survived. Moreover, producing offspring with other species is considered an abomination within their society. Consequently, their empire isn’t growing as it should, and this has led to a society that desires expansion but is rapidly losing its fighting strength. They are vulnerable and can be overpowered.
What Does This Mean for Invincible?
This new insight sheds a different perspective on Mark’s current situation. Now it seems logical that he was not only saved but entrusted with the task of conquering Earth instead of Nolan. Despite being half-human, his fighting abilities are so impressive that even the Viltrum Empire is ready to delegate such an important role to him. It’s due to the fact that there aren’t many of them left alive. This revelation also raises some intriguing questions about what the future holds.
Although facing a finite number of foes in the Viltrum Empire’s war may seem like a glimmer of hope, if each one possesses strength comparable to or exceeding the Viltrumites we’ve encountered so far, conquering them will be an uphill battle. Mark must brace himself for this potential danger while simultaneously handling whatever challenges arise in each new episode. The situation is likely to worsen before it can improve.
