Originally published over two decades ago, the popular series “Invincible” underwent numerous adaptations during its transition to television, and among these updates, one significant improvement has been yielding fruitful results in its third season.
Apart from beneficial changes such as Amber gaining additional intelligence and William revealing his sexuality, Invincible’s third season also highlights why preserving Rae’s life instead of her original character’s demise contributes positively to the series.
Towards the finale of Invincible season 2, when diminutive Rae, the character who shrinks, was devoured by the Komodo Dragon belonging to the Lizard League, comic enthusiasts weren’t particularly surprised because this was precisely how the male counterpart from the comics – ‘Shrinking Ray’ – perished.

Yet, it becomes clear that Rae in this instance narrowly made it through, suggesting there were deeper underlying issues at play.
Despite the shock value of transforming the character into a woman during Season 1, it wasn’t too much of a leap because Kirkman had acknowledged in an interview with ComicsBeat that they were running low on well-developed female characters.
Over the course of the series, Rae may not have had extensive screen presence, but she surpassed the original character’s intrigue in many ways. Her conversations were more captivating and the action sequences were improved upon. In contrast to her comic book counterpart, Shrinking Ray, who was primarily a secondary character, Rae stood out as a more substantial and engaging figure.
In the third season of Invincible, Rae, Rex, Bulletproof, and Rudy depart from Guardians HQ en route to their Teen Team base. The series is now delving deeper into Rae’s character, providing more substantial development as opposed to the previous, less impactful death scene.
In episode 3, as I began unraveling Rex’s past with her, revealing how her parents sacrificed her childhood for heroism, this particular version of the shrinking hero has taken on a more world-weary tone. She yearns for a life that’s ordinary, one where she can experience freedom and independence, instead of constantly teetering on the edge of danger as she did in season 2, barely escaping death.
It appears that, during episode 4, while grocery shopping with Rex, she firmly insists on wanting to be self-reliant, purchasing and preparing her own meals – much like any ordinary person would. By being reborn in this rendition of Invincible, she’s growing increasingly determined to experience the life she couldn’t fully live when she was younger.
Instead of merely serving as alternate interpretations of Marvel’s Ant-Man or DC’s Atom, the TV series of Invincible distinguishes itself by developing unique characters such as Rae, who are distinct individuals with their own motivations and backgrounds, contributing to a more immersive and detailed world.
In my opinion, while the original Male Ray remained part of the refreshed Guardians of the Galaxy team, his character was so seamlessly integrated that his absence would barely be missed.
Although Ray’s demise at the jaws of a Komodo Dragon was undeniably tragic, it underscored the harsh reality that even heroes often face gruesome fates. Still, this event didn’t bring any laughter to comic book enthusiasts.

In a grueling twist for the character Shrinking Rae in The Invincible series, nearly taking her life was tough, but it’s becoming apparent that maintaining her existence in season 3 serves the overall narrative better than merely ending her character arc.
It appears that Kirkman is sticking to his goal of improving the viewing experience by gradually increasing Kirkman’s screen time in this season, rather than altering the narrative merely for change’s sake.
As a devoted movie buff, I can’t help but notice that the modifications made to Rae aren’t influencing the course of the escalating struggle between Mark, Nolan, and the Viltrimites, as they fight relentlessly for Earth and the cosmos.
While they work on this franchise, both the original creators and their associates are using the chance to enrich the world we’re all battling over with extra details, ensuring it feels authentic without overshadowing the beloved main storyline’s key moments.
Ultimately, regardless of how Rae’s story unfolds in this season of Invincible or further, the conclusion of her tale will carry far greater significance compared to its portrayal in the original source material.
