In the climactic finale of “Invincible” Season 3, a major twist left both animated series and comic book enthusiasts buzzing: the reappearance of Damien Darkblood. (SPOILER ALERT) Since his expulsion from Earth to Hell by Cecil and the GDA at the end of “Invincible” Season 1, following his disregard for Cecil’s orders not to probe into the Guardians’ murder and particularly avoid looking into Nolan/Omni-Man’s role, Darkblood has been absent. However, a surprising scene towards the end of Season 3 hinted that after spending more than a year in Hell according to the show’s timeline, Darkblood has devised a spell capable of summoning a highly potent individual to Hell. This would enable his “master,” an ancient demon, to seize control of that person’s power and contest for the “throne of Hell.” As we prepare for “Invincible” Season 4, it will unveil a fresh narrative line not found in the comics, sparking curiosity among fans, with the most pressing question being:
Invincible Season 4: Who Is Damien Darkblood Trying to Possess?
It seems quite plausible that Damien Darkblood will take over the powers of Mark Grayson/Invincible, given his central role in the series. However, the true implications might be more complex than they appear. In that crucial scene, Damien’s words suggest he has knowledge of a “surface dweller” whose power hasn’t been seen on Earth for ages. This could refer to either Mark or Nolan, depending on how Damien perceives the situation.
Indeed, “Invincible” has seldom adhered to typical narrative patterns, often veering off in unexpected directions instead. Case in point, the last episodes of Season 3 where Mark and their companions were caught off guard by Angstrom Levy and a horde of Invincible counterparts from various dimensions. This was immediately followed by the arrival of Conquest, a particularly ruthless and insane Viltrumite enforcer. Therefore, anticipating a simple resolution to the Season 3 cliffhanger might be an underestimation of the show’s penchant for unpredictability.
A possibility some spectators are suggesting is that Damien might seek retribution directly, fulfilling his vow. Back in Season 1, during a ritual banishing the demon detective, Damien swore to Cecil he would meet him in Hell one day and suffer an even more dreadful fate when he arrived. It could be that this moment is fast approaching.
In the context of Damien’s terminology, a secondary plot in Season 3 of Invincible involved Cecil turning corpses into superpowered cybernetic soldiers (ReAnimen) for Sinclair’s mad scientist, as a means to counter high-level threats such as the Viltrumites. The Season 3 finale disclosed that these ReAnimen have progressed to a new stage, utilizing the bodies of Mark’s deceased variants to create new soldiers capable of fighting at Viltrumite power levels. With these new soldiers, an army of superheroes, and numerous military/espionage resources under his control, Cecil is arguably the most powerful individual on Earth. Given Damien’s perspective, Cecil might be seen as having a “blackened heart,” offering a potential hint that he, not Mark, could be Damien’s target. Damien’s demonic master has expressed a yearning to experience battle once more, and it seems that no one else would be better equipped to provoke global war and turmoil than Cecil.
Robert Kirkman, renowned for creating the Invincible show and comic, has verified that the Damien Darkblood ‘Hell Arc’ is a fresh storyline unique to the animated series. This arc contains content that Kirkman regrets not including in the comics when he was writing them, which he now considers a missed opportunity.
In every superhero tale, there’s a part where they journey to the underworld to battle the devil. This occurs in both DC and Marvel comics, and it’s quite significant. However, in Invincible, Kirkman shared with Variety that he didn’t include anything similar. He kept getting diverted, and there was never a suitable moment. So, it could be that we might see something like this in the series, and the scene at the end of that episode is preparing us for that possibility. Oh my goodness, and we had the chance to collaborate with Bruce Campbell. It doesn’t get any better than that!
The show Invincible has a habit of incorporating side quests, often starting an episode focused on one group of characters only to abruptly shift focus to another set midway through. Robert Kirkman, the creator, may choose to use this technique in the upcoming Hell Arc, which could potentially be seen as a side quest to maintain the primary story’s continuity. This might lead to a surprising twist for fans by giving more screen time to Nolan (played by J.K. Simmons), while the main comic-based storyline continues with Mark and his crew.
Regardless of how things unfold, it’s exhilarating to find that fans of Invincible are all in the same boat, unsure about the upcoming twists in Season 4.
Invincible streams on Amazon Prime Video.
