Murder mysteries, whether on the big screen or television, are as common as daisies in springtime. The show “Midsomar Murders” has gained such popularity that it’s almost as affordable as a substitute for “Dignatas.” Fitting snugly into the cozy afternoon murder slot is “Invitation to a Murder,” starring Mischa Barton as Miranda Green, a florist and amateur detective. However, when Miranda and the six other guests arrive at the island mansion, the host Lewis Findley is nowhere to be found.
Right off the bat, the film pays homage to Agatha Christie’s works with its setting, characters, motives for murder, and even a dead body meeting a grisly end. Miranda has the chance to showcase her detective abilities, and there are scenes reminiscent of Poirot as she uncovers secrets through careful observation of words, speech patterns, and behaviors. However, the film isn’t without its flaws – some minor (like a 1938 British police officer carrying a weapon) to major (a conclusion involving advanced technology for that time). The issues seem to be rooted in the writing, as it leaves out crucial details, making the audience guess instead of solving the mystery. It’s possible the writers are learning from these mistakes since a sequel has already been produced and appears to be a potential franchise for Barton, who convincingly takes on a role distinct from her previous roles.
