inZOI Early Access Review – Second Life

In the virtual world of inZOI today, I had an interesting chat with my roommate. We discussed coffee bean varieties and life lessons derived from death, which was quite unusual. Surprisingly, she brought up how our relationship seemed tense. The conversation then took a casual turn, “It seems we’re just feeling irritated towards each other now,” before I steered it back to our usual Sim-like language and emoticons. Quite puzzling indeed.

As a gamer, here’s how I might put it: Landed a gig at Blue Moon Soft, a development studio. The recruitment process was as simple as tapping a button on my smartphone – talk about an easy entry! I made sure to clock in some extra sleep and wake up early, then spent the morning gearing up… only for my character to vanish from the screen for work duties. At least I got the ability to delegate tasks using that handy sidebar icon and command my roommate like a boss in this new game called Real Life!

It’s important to set clear objectives for your Zone of Impact (ZOI) in the future. This could mean pursuing education at a university or finding employment to cover living expenses.

Stating that “inZOI” is bizarre would be quite modest, and this isn’t due to deliberate occurrences. It’s fascinating to observe my ZOI engaging in conversation by standing up and then sitting down again. Or speaking to the back of their head while they’re facing another direction. Or reading a book in front of a computer rather than on the balcony or spacious living room.

That doesn’t even touch on the issue of that one day of frequent bathroom visits, seemingly every hour (possibly due to diseases that can arise from it). Additionally, the phone conversation between my two ZOIs emphasizes the almost impervious stupidity that might characterize the AI controlling their dialogues.

In a manner reminiscent of “Sims”, it offers an engaging early access experience. When you first start, you’re given various personality options for your ZOIs, such as the Adventurous type who is always eager to explore new things, or the Authority figure who seeks control and gets frustrated more easily when things don’t go as planned. There are many other personalities available too. Moreover, there’s an incredibly detailed character creation tool, enabling you to customize your ZOI in countless ways, including a variety of clothing styles.

As a game enthusiast, when I’ve picked my in-game city and chosen my dwelling, I find myself juggling the unpredictable Urges of my character’s ZOIs. These sudden prompts inspire my character to venture out and engage with the diverse NPC community, each living their unique lives. For instance, an intense emotion could spur me to connect with another player, sharing my feelings with them, even if it leads to some cringe-worthy moments. But hey, these interactions reward me with precious MeowCoins, a token of appreciation from the game’s adorable feline mascot!

You don’t have to attend to these tasks right away; you could choose not to search under the vending machine or clean the bedding. However, it’s essential to establish the broader objectives for your zone of influence (ZOIs), such as deciding whether to enroll in school or find a job to cover expenses. This isn’t meant to suggest that you can’t enjoy leisurely activities like strolling through the park or observing people who give you odd looks, or spending time at the beach and appreciating the peaceful scenery. However, reality often demands that we have some sort of plan to manage finances, especially when money is limited, so a thoughtful approach, considering your lifestyle, would be beneficial.

I’m not very fond of the AI that generates textures from prompts, as it often requires a lot of time but delivers limited outcomes with minimal options for personalization.

If you’re the type who enjoys letting systems run on their own, expecting a certain amount of disorder to emerge, I’m not sure that inZOI is quite there yet in terms of allowing such freedom. There’s an intrigue in observing these systems under a microscope, captivated by the ZOIs as they interact, forming various relationships, working, and engaging in other activities.

Beyond visiting coffee shops, parks, art galleries and similar spots, I found the number of activities somewhat limited. Hosting a gathering where my ZOI showcased their less-than-stellar singing left me feeling underwhelmed, partly because they tended to stick with their roommate instead of greeting guests, despite the “Greet the Guests” option being chosen.

After a few hours of early gameplay, it appeared that I was barely scratching the surface of the intricate mechanics. A glance at the map and Families section underscored the depth and complexity of the game’s world.

Although these stories were captivating, they didn’t develop in the diverse ways I had anticipated. You’re right, life itself mirrors this, and I need to actively engage with it instead of passively waiting for events. Perhaps generating various ZOIs could address that issue, as manipulating my roommate during her daily routines gave me a unique sense of control.

inZOI provides a wide range of personalization options for your living spaces through its Creative Studio. Here, you can choose from various house templates and tailor them to your preferences. You’re free to remove walls, make them transparent, switch tile types and colors – the possibilities are endless. However, I find the AI used to generate textures based on prompts a bit limiting as it may require time for results that lack significant customization opportunities.

As a gamer, I’ve found that disregarding some tips might lead to even more impressive in-game outcomes. For instance, you can demolish walls, twist them around in unconventional ways, essentially customizing the game environment to suit your style.

While it may appear confined at first glance, exploring the world and interacting with non-player characters offers a wealth of possibilities. By engaging with them, learning their stories, and observing how events unfold, you’ll uncover hidden depths.

Let’s talk about the performance of inZOI. I ran it primarily on High settings in DLSS Quality Mode, making some adjustments to enhance the frame rate. During my initial playtest, I encountered several drops in frame rate and stuttering, along with at least one crash. However, after an update, these issues were addressed, and when I switched to the early access build, there were noticeable improvements.

Even as vehicles whizzed past at close distances, there were occasional interruptions in the image and lower clarity. Keep in mind that performance may improve with time if the playtest’s updates are any indication. For the best visual experience, a powerful computer system will be required.

Despite its quirks and unusual events, inZOI is still a game worth watching. Although it may appear shallow at first glance, there’s certainly something intriguing about exploring the world, interacting with other characters, learning more about them, and seeing what transpires. The busy atmosphere of life, which includes socializing and advancing in your career, might not appeal to everyone. On the flip side, the richness of content in The Sims undeniably surpasses it.

On the other hand, InZOI provides a strong collection of self-reliant features and serves as a reliable base for further development, with the hope that it will improve upon the minor flaws in its system.
