Is a Bleach Remake Really Happening? It Better Be.

As a long-time fan of anime and manga, I can confidently say that Ichigo Kurosaki from Bleach is one of the coolest characters to ever grace our screens. I remember when Bleach first aired back in 2004, and it quickly became a staple in my weekly viewing schedule. The supernatural storyline, coupled with Tite Kubo’s brilliant plotting, captured my attention from the very beginning.

Among the most charismatic characters ever created, Ichigo Kurosaki was initially introduced to the world in 2001 through the manga series Bleach, written by Tite Kubo. From its inception, the fantastical storyline captivated fans, and the anime adaptation by Studio Pierrot, which premiered in 2004, further cemented its popularity. Despite a recent comeback, the series still needs more – an anime reboot is long overdue, and there may be plans for such a project in the works.

For years now, the Bleach fandom has been asking for an anime remake, and a new post from its team has netizens doing a double take. This year does mark the 20th anniversary of the original Bleach anime, and a special event will soon take place in Japan to mark the event. On September 16, a Bleach fan-event will be held in Tokyo that promises to drop “new information about the 20th anniversary” of the anime. In another post by the team, they promise the event will include information that encapsulates and transcends the anime. So really, it is no surprise that rumors of a remake are popping off.

Why Do We Want a Bleach Remake

One reason for considering a remake of the anime series “Bleach” lies in its pacing. While Studio Pierrot did an admirable job animating Bleach in its early days, and iconic moments like Ichigo’s Bankai debut remain memorable, it is well-known that Bleach faced production challenges. The manga was ongoing when the anime premiered, causing the production team to eventually catch up with Kubo’s content. To mitigate this clash, the Bleach anime included a fair amount of filler content, ranging from single episodes to entire arcs. This filler content is often cited as one of the show’s main criticisms.

The main storyline of Bleach has concluded, making it simpler for a reboot to structure the narrative from beginning to end without including unnecessary filler content. Since the battles have already taken place, the Pierrot team can refine certain encounters and avoid repetition that occurred during the Hueco Mundo arc and Aizen’s final fight, where the original anime stretched the storyline due to weekly chapter requirements. Now, we have a clear roadmap for Ichigo’s adventure throughout the series.

Now Is the Perfect Time for a Bleach Reboot

Apart from wrapping up the manga of Bleach, another compelling reason for a remake arises now – the Thousand-Year Blood War arc. If you haven’t been keeping tabs, Bleach is back on our screens, and I must say that the reunion has been incredibly satisfying. The original anime never got to adapt the final saga because it ended while Kubo was still sketching the finale. A few years ago, Pierrot announced the creation of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, and this four-part series is still ongoing. This October, the anime’s third season will air with ‘The Conflict’, and trust me, it looks absolutely epic!

This latest Bleach anime has successfully rekindled interest in the Soul Society, while demonstrating the creative potential of Pierrot when given a consistent production timeline. From its premiere, Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War has delivered high-quality animation without any filler episodes. Moreover, author Kubo has added original elements to the anime that enrich the canon. The success of this comeback underscores the fact that Bleach possesses greater potential with careful planning, and it’s only fitting that the original anime receives similar high-quality treatment.

Even Tite Kubo Wants a Bleach Remake

As a dedicated Bleach fan, I can’t help but feel a spark of hope when it comes to potential remakes. Back in February 2024, our beloved creator, Tite Kudo, was asked about his feelings towards a Bleach remake on his personal blog. And guess what he said? He expressed his desire to make it happen! While nothing official has been announced yet, the fact that the mastermind behind this iconic series is eager for such a project certainly adds fuel to our speculations. Here’s to hoping for a new Bleach adventure someday!

Moving forward, the originator expressed his delight at the prospect of reimagining Bleach, aiming to stay true to the source material. With Kubo supporting the project, this reduces a significant obstacle for Pierrot in reviving Bleach. The artist yearns for Bleach to receive a similar treatment as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and quite frankly, who wouldn’t? In terms of anime popularity, few series can rival Bleach on a worldwide level. Ichigo’s influence has been undeniable with Thousand-Year Blood War. The community would eagerly welcome a high-quality remake of Bleach, so let’s hope Pierrot is preparing something special for the original series’ 20th anniversary.
