Is Aunt May Revealing Superpowers in Marvel’s Latest Issue?

In the world of Spider-Man, Aunt May has typically played a supportive role, either providing emotional strength for Peter Parker or needing rescue herself. However, in the latest issue of “Spider-Boy,” this dynamic shifts significantly. The spinoff series revolves around Bailey Briggs, a young boy with spider DNA, who fights for the freedom of creatures created by Madame Monstrosity, leading to clashes with one of Spider-Man’s classic villains. In an unexpected turn, Aunt May showcases a previously unseen ability in this confrontation.

Caution: Spoilers for Spider-Boy #19 follow.

Issue #19 of “Spider-Kid” features the creative minds of Dan Slott, Paco Medina, Erick Arciniega, and Joe Caramagna from VC. In this storyline, Spider-Kid and his companion Christina attempt a bank heist, unaware that Mr. Negative has hidden keys in some safety deposit boxes within. Predictably, the situation takes an unexpected turn when Mr. Negative manipulates a group of bystanders to assault both Spider-Man and Spider-Kid. As the crowd rushes towards Spider-Man, Mr. Negative compels Aunt May to demolish the wall-crawler. However, something peculiar occurs… Aunt May manages to withstand Mr. Negative’s control.

Does Aunt May Have a Super Mind?

One by one, Mr. Negative manipulates the mob psychologically, urging them to assault Spider-Man. He even orders Aunt May to harm Spider-Man. This leaves our friendly neighborhood hero stunned when he witnesses Aunt May under his influence. However, she quickly regains control and retaliates against Mr. Negative using her handbag. “If you’re looking for a piece of my mind, Martin Li…,” Aunt May threatens, “… I’m more than ready to give it to you, you despicable man!

Initially, it’s unclear how Aunt May managed to withstand Mr. Negative’s influence; this detail is revealed later. However, before Mr. Negative could harm her, Spider-Man snatched him and hurled him through a window. Upon seeing this, Aunt May expressed relief that Mr. Negative didn’t manipulate her once more, a situation reminiscent of the incident in 1999’s Amazing Spider-Man #618, as noted by the editor.

Looking back at the incident, it was just after Mr. Negative had stabbed one of his demons in the abdomen when Aunt May unexpectedly entered. Overwhelmed, Mr. Negative seized control over Aunt May, convincing her that what she perceived wasn’t authentic. Later on, Aunt May crossed paths with Peter Parker and Jay Jameson, exhibiting behavior under the sway of Mr. Negative’s negative influence, as she scolded Peter harshly.

In the closing scenes of issue #19 of Spider-Boy, we discover how Aunt May managed to escape from Mr. Negative’s control. The events that unfold are strikingly similar in a later instance, where Mr. Negative manipulates Bailey Briggs to attack Spider-Man. Initially, Bailey follows orders, but then surprises Mr. Negative by striking him from behind, allowing Spider-Man the opportunity to deliver the decisive kick. Later, Bailey clarifies to Spider-Man that Mr. Negative can’t take control twice, as he had already possessed Spider-Boy in 2023’s Superior Spider-Man #1. As a result, this second attempt, much like Aunt May’s case, was unsuccessful.
