The connection between the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the X-Men was rather frosty until Disney acquired Fox’s assets in 2017. Since Fox owned the X-Men franchise, along with the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man at Sony, the mutant team often felt like a neglected stepchild within the company, both in print and on screen. However, now that all these characters fall under the MCU umbrella, it’s only fitting that the X-Men might unknowingly serve as antagonists in Avengers: Doomsday, potentially bringing one of the 21st century’s most contentious Marvel Comics narratives to life on the big screen, marking Doctor Doom’s grand entrance.
What Is Avengers vs. X-Men?
The conflict titled “Avengers vs. X-Men” arises when these two superhero groups clash due to a disagreement regarding Hope Summers, a mutant who is prophesied as the messiah. The return of the cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force and its apparent destination towards Earth triggers this dispute, as it seems intent on merging with Hope.
The X-Men, led by Cyclops, are stationed at their base, Utopia, and are preparing to aid Hope and allow the Phoenix to unite with her. On the other hand, Captain America heads the Avengers who aim to apprehend Hope Summers for protection from the Phoenix. This confrontation escalates into a battle between both teams, while some Avengers members are in space, attempting to halt the Phoenix from reaching Earth.
In an unfortunate turn of events, Iron Man’s actions exacerbate the situation by dividing the Phoenix Force into five separate entities that bond with Cyclops, Emma Frost, Namor, Colossus, and Magik.
The story unfolds in three parts: Two teams engage in conflicts across Earth and on the Moon, with Cyclops transforming into the Dark Phoenix, while Charles Xavier reappears only to die. Later, Hope manages to extract the Phoenix from him, reversing the chaos, resurrecting mutants globally, and eventually sending the Phoenix away with the aid of Scarlet Witch. This marked a conclusion to a plotline initiated in Avengers Disassembled back in 2004, which proved financially successful for Marvel, but left fans somewhat confused. The teams appear as antagonists throughout the event and are driven more by storyline needs than their established traits. Although it’s not the lowest point in Marvel’s recent history, it does signify a slump for mutants that persisted until 2019 with House of X.
After that, Marvel introduced Uncanny Avengers, focusing on Captain America’s attempts to reconcile with Mutants. This was followed by the AXIS storyline, where Red Skull seized Charles Xavier’s brain to transform into Red Onslaught. During this time, the X-Men even clashed with the Inhumans as Marvel attempted to redefine them as the MCU equivalent of mutants, making the 2000s particularly challenging for the team.
How Would ‘A vs X’ Fit Into the MCU?
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been thrilled by the crossover of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and X-Men characters lately. For instance, Sir Patrick Stewart reprised his role as Professor X in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” Kelsey Grammer made an appearance as Beast in the post-credits scene of The Marvels, and there were numerous cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine. Now, with many actors from the Fox X-Men series joining the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, it’s natural for people to speculate that Avengers Vs. X-Men could be influencing the storyline.
While only basic details such as the main cast and filming commencement have been officially revealed, there are numerous potential plotlines that Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) could draw upon in crafting the fifth Avengers movie and its sequel, titled Avengers: Secret Wars.
It seems to me that elements from “Avengers vs. X-Men” and the initial issue of the 2015’s “Secret Wars” might merge in some way. The ongoing story of Incursions and the multiverse, which are significant aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as a whole, have already set the stage for a confrontation between the MCU Earth (as shown at the end of “The Marvels”) and the X-Men’s Earth. In the original “Secret Wars” comic book crossover, the Ultimate Marvel Earth and regular Marvel 616 Earth eventually collided as the final two remaining worlds, with heroes on both sides battling until the very end.
This Is The End?
There’s been some chatter suggesting that the initial Avengers from the Marvel Cinematic Universe could transform into dark counterparts in the movie “Doomsday”. However, discussions about the X-Men appear to carry more substance. This is partly because Doctor Doom, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four were all owned by Fox before their acquisition. It seems plausible that they would represent a massive, world-altering invasion against the MCU, leading up to “Secret Wars”. Given the upcoming soft reboot of the MCU, this could further stoke excitement for mutant fans.
The upcoming Avengers films may not be an exact replica of “Avengers vs. X-Men” or any other stories influencing them. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have shared some insights about their story plans, stating they will draw inspiration from various sources, including the original 1980s “Secret Wars” comics, Jonathan Hickman’s 2015 version, and anything else that fits seamlessly into the narrative mix.
Joe Russo explained, “We often craft our unique take on the story, using comics as a general guide. However, I’ve been a fan of the original series since my childhood and it sparked my interest in Marvel comic books. The Hickman run is equally captivating, and while they differ significantly from each other, we plan to pull inspiration from both.
Without a doubt, the countdown is on for “Avengers: Doomsday,” with more details and revelations unveiled as we approach its release in May 2026. The path towards “Secret Wars” has been set, and anticipation will run high as fans try to guess what’s coming next.
