Is Dalgliesh returning for season 4?

As a long-time admirer of British detective series and having spent countless hours poring over PD James’s Dalgliesh novels, I must say that the third season of this captivating adaptation has left me yearning for more. Bertie Carvel’s portrayal of Adam Dalgliesh is nothing short of extraordinary, and the introduction of Dr Emma Lavenham (Claire Goose) adds an intriguing layer to the narrative.

In the third season of Dalgliesh, things didn’t quite follow the routine for Detective Chief Inspector Adam Dalgliesh, played by Bertie Carvel.

During his busy workload involving three intricate matters, Dr Emma Lavenham momentarily provided a refreshing diversion.

As a devoted film enthusiast, I can’t help but notice that her brief appearance suggests a character of great significance in the narrative. For those who’ve delved into the source material, you’ll understand why her part in the story is pivotal; more on her role will be unveiled as we progress.

But will we see any of that explored in future episodes?

Read on for everything you need to know about a potential Dalgliesh season 4.

Has Dalgliesh been renewed for season 4?

Channel 5 has yet to confirm if there will be a fourth season of Dalgliesh.

Discussing the potential of season 3 for the series, Bertie Carvel expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “There have been discussions, and I’d definitely be thrilled to contribute more.

I don’t see a great number of additional novels to be adapted, but predicting the future is beyond my capabilities.

“I’d certainly love to do more, let’s put it that way.”

When could a potential Dalgliesh season 4 air?

Initially premiering in November 2021, the first season captivated audiences. However, eager fans had to endure a two-year gap before season 2 was released in April 2023. Finally, another year passed and season 3 made its appearance in December 2024.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I must share that, although there’s no official news yet, we’re anticipating the fourth season might not hit our screens until late 2025 at the earliest. However, based on past seasons’ patterns, it could potentially premiere as early as 2026. So, fellow movie lovers, mark your calendars and keep those fingers crossed!

Who could return for a potential Dalgliesh season 4?

It’s a given that Bertie Carvel will return as Adam Dalgliesh if season 4 is given the thumbs up.

It’s possible that we might see Claire Goose again in the role of Dr. Emma Lavenham, and there’s a chance Alistair Brammer may return as DS Daniel Tarrant.

Regarding Miskin, at our last encounter, she was pregnant. Therefore, it’s uncertain whether she will appear in the following season.

Look forward to the addition of numerous fresh guest actors, along with potential new detectives who will be teaming up with Dalgliesh on their cases.

What could happen in a potential Dalgliesh season 4?

9 of the Dalgliesh novels have been adapted so far:

  • Season 1: Shroud for a Nightingale, The Black Tower and A Taste for Death.
  • Season 2: Death of an Expert Witness, A Certain Justice and The Murder Room.
  • Season 3:  Death in Holy Orders, Cover Her Face and Devices and Desires.

That leaves five more books ready and waiting to be adapted:

  • A Mind to Murder
  • Unnatural Causes
  • Original Sin
  • The Lighthouse
  • The Private Patient

By the close of season 3, it appears Dalgliesh is poised to pursue a romantic relationship with Dr Emma Lavenham. Readers familiar with the series will recognize that the two indeed begin dating, but his professional obligations frequently cause tension between them.

However, with time, they manage to synchronize themselves, and in the final novel of P.D. James, The Private Patient, they end up getting married. Carvel suspects that Miskin may have helped arrange this marriage.

He commented, “She triggers the development that had been on hold for an entire three seasons.” He’s been wandering around in diverse paths regarding his hidden feelings, and she seems to have the unique ability to unlock them in an unexpected manner.

PD James used an evocative expression suggesting that Dalgliesh carries a tiny piece of frost within him, and I believe what she meant was his unyielding, no-nonsense attitude above all else.

Furthermore, I believe it’s significant to consider how his injury and sorrow have shaped his character since we first encountered him in this series. Essentially, over the course of these past three years, there has been a gradual melting of the emotional iceberg that he carries within him.

Carvel went on to say: “A significant portion is attributed to Miskin, and the sometimes complex dynamic they share. It’s also worth mentioning that, as the series progresses, he will undoubtedly take a step, make a bold move, and expose himself to potential harm once more by initiating a new relationship with Emma Lavenham.

It’s due to Miskin’s previous education, his past experiences closing opportunities, and the understanding that he needs to reopen those chances and take risks, that I believe he is incomplete.

Prior to the release of Season 3, Carvel hinted that if the audience’s interest continued beyond James’s books, he might consider developing unique storylines from the perspective of the showrunner.

Carvel stated: “She seems to have stayed faithful to PD James’ style, yet it’s impossible to replicate the original content due to the differing formats. It will always be a unique creation.

“And I guess what I’m saying is I’m really excited to see what Helen wants to do next.”
