Is DC Going to Undo a Major Wonder Woman Death?

In the ongoing series of ‘Wonder Woman‘, significant transformations have been unfolding. The journey started with the debut of Trinity, daughter of Wonder Woman, in issue 800. Since then, Wonder Woman has been engaged in a fierce struggle against a new adversary known as the Sovereign. This conflict led to the Amazons being outlawed, igniting a war that has engulfed everyone connected to Wonder Woman, be they friend or foe. Tragically, during this fight, Steve Trevor lost his life at the hands of the Sovereign. This loss propelled the conflict to an even more intense level, with Wonder Woman and the Wonder Girls determined to eliminate the Sovereign. They ultimately succeeded, and readers were given insight into Trinity’s conception, followed by a chilling peek into Wonder Woman’s future. Additionally, throughout ‘Wonder Woman’, there have been supplementary stories focusing on Trinity. The appeal of these side tales culminated in the launch of ‘Trinity: Daughter of Wonder Woman’ #1, a spin-off series that explores concepts initially presented in ‘Wonder Woman’.

In the first issue of “Trinity,” the spirit of Steve Trevor seems to linger throughout. The storyline, which involves three distinct iterations of Trinity encountering each other and inadvertently transforming their Jon Kents and Damian Waynes into Corgis who then make off with a Time Bubble, leading the trio to journey through time to reverse the transformation, is heavily influenced by the demise of Steve Trevor. This tragic event plays a significant role in Trinity’s life, and the comic effectively establishes this backstory. However, this raises an intriguing question: will Steve Trevor be brought back to life? The response to this question is not as straightforward as a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no.’

Steve Trevor’s Death Is a Major Turning Point in Wonder Woman’s Life

Steve Trevor has consistently been a crucial element in the story of Wonder Woman. Typically, he lands on Themyscira by accident and Diana grows so fond of him that she decides to venture into the human world, competing in a contest that earns her the title Wonder Woman. Throughout the Golden, Silver, and Bronze eras, Steve often served as Diana’s unofficial partner. However, their relationship has not always been central to the storyline. While Steve was portrayed as Wonder Woman’s equivalent to Lois Lane—a resourceful, intelligent human who matches her abilities—in recent times, their romantic relationship has taken a backseat as Wonder Woman evolves as a character. In the latest run of Wonder Woman, some readers were taken aback by Steve Trevor’s prominence, but it proved effective. It was clear that Tom King had a specific story he wanted to tell, culminating in the creation of Trinity. King skillfully crafted their relationship, even for those who may not have been fond of it. Since his demise, Wonder Woman has effectively emphasized Steve Trevor’s significance and his loss. Readers witnessed Diana guiding him across the River Styx to the Underworld and also saw him in the afterlife, yearning for Diana. He makes an appearance in Trinity #1, resolving the Fates and expressing his need to see his daughter.

New Wonder Woman Movie Confirmed by James Gunn

A common frustration with superhero comics lies in their habit of restoring everything to the original state. This practice is primarily due to the fact that many fans outside of these comics aren’t familiar with the intricate details of each character. For instance, Batman wasn’t allowed to marry Catwoman after Tom King’s Batman, despite rumors suggesting otherwise, because casual Batman readers might be perplexed if they encountered a comic where he was married. This pattern is more evident in DC comics, given their inclination to avoid resetting everything for fans unfamiliar with the series.

For example, the death of Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman seems likely to lead to his resurrection, considering the announcement of a new Wonder Woman movie by DC Studios. However, unlike other instances where characters are brought back to life, DC appears less inclined to do so for Steve Trevor. This trend is further emphasized by the fact that even though writer Tom King killed Alfred, he has remained dead since 2020.

Both Wonder Woman and Trinity #1 have hinted at Steve Trevor’s return from the dead, but so far, this hasn’t happened. It’s possible that Steve may never come back to life. As someone who previously advocated for his resurrection, I now believe that perhaps it’s best if he remains deceased. This new perspective stems from recognizing that the current state of affairs might actually be preferable and that DC might choose not to bring him back.

Bringing Back Steve Trevor Takes Away a Major New Aspect of Wonder Woman’s Life

In recent times, Steve Trevor’s character hasn’t been central in DC comics. Apart from his role in various Wonder Woman reboots, Steve doesn’t seem essential to the broader narrative of the DC Multiverse. Instead, he serves as a poignant symbol of grief, shared by both Wonder Woman and Trinity.

There are several possibilities for reviving Steve Trevor, while maintaining the weight of his death, given that Wonder Woman is acquainted with gods. Moreover, Trinity’s history of time travel in ‘Wonder Woman’ back-ups and ‘Trinity’ #1 implies that younger versions of Trinity might attempt to resurrect him. However, I believe bringing Steve back would not be wise.

Having Steve return would diminish the significance of the Sovereign narrative for Wonder Woman. His death enhances the story’s historical importance in the Wonder Woman series. Furthermore, his resurrection would hinder her progression as she cannot move on while he remains among the living. Although it is reasonable to imagine Steve making occasional appearances in Wonder Woman comics (considering their mythological nature and connections), I believe that bringing him back from the dead would be inappropriate. Some characters are more impactful when they’re deceased, and Steve Trevor is one of those instances. It seems unlikely that DC will choose to resurrect him.
