It’s easy to understand why — Slade serves as the primary villain in Season 2, offering a captivating narrative both in the present and through flashbacks. Arroverse Deathstroke
In the first season, Slade was initially shown through flashbacks while Oliver was on the enigmatic island of Lian Yu. This island served as an engaging starting point for fans, sparking curiosity about Oliver’s past and how it shaped him into the vigilante we know. From the get-go, Slade was linked to these mysteries and would have been intriguing enough if he had remained in the past. However, the thrill of encountering a live Slade in present-day Starling City ignited excitement for Season 2.
Slade’s character development significantly leveraged the narrative possibilities of Arrow’s dual timeline, generating tension in both periods and hinting at dramatic conclusions for each. This is where we gleaned the majority of Oliver’s shipwreck backstory, and in Season 2, it appeared that Slade served as Oliver’s primary mentor, imparting most of his combat skills. The information presented heightened anticipation for their confrontation in the present, leaving us curious about their past and why they can’t reconcile.
As a devoted fan, I discovered that Slade was an Australian intelligence operative who found himself marooned on Lian Yu while attempting a rescue mission for his fellow agent, Yao Fei. With Oliver’s aid, we managed to revive this mission and successfully rescued Shado, Yao Fei’s daughter. Tragically, Slade was injured by Dr. Ivo, leading to his revival through the Mirakuru drug. Under its effects, Ivo manipulated Slade into believing that Oliver had murdered Shado, and despite my best efforts to prove otherwise, I was compelled to engage him in a life-or-death battle. In what seemed like the final blow, I plunged a knife into his eye, only for him to be later rescued by other ASIS agents.
Currently, Slade persists on a misguided path of retribution. He’s not content with merely facing off again; instead, he seeks to undermine Oliver’s growing repute, endanger his loved ones, and seize control of the city that Oliver is striving to keep crime-free. To achieve this, Slade employs an army fortified by Mirakuru, and he goes as far as to kill Oliver’s mother in his plan. Meanwhile, Oliver struggles with his recent pledge to combat crime without taking more lives, pondering if it’s possible for him to stop Slade without resorting to lethal force.
Over time, Oliver successfully counteracts the influence of Mirakuru, leading to his collaboration with Slade once more in subsequent seasons. This character frequently reappeared throughout future episodes, consistently delighting viewers with engaging storylines that stood out among the series’ offerings.
Bold Strokes
In the early stages, Arrow showed great audacity by incorporating DC Comics characters effectively, and Deathstroke is a clear demonstration of this strategy’s success. Although he was already recognized, Deathstroke wasn’t overly tied to any specific hero or team, making him an ideal fit for Green Arrow’s rogues gallery. By the time Arrow premiered, even fans who hadn’t delved into comic books would likely have been acquainted with Slade due to his prominent roles in Cartoon Network’s Teen Titans, Young Justice, and Teen Titans Go!, as well as being a recurring character in DC video games.
