Enthusiasts of Nintendo and those who fondly remember the Nintendo 64 console era have been given renewed optimism that a classic game from this period, long forgotten but dearly loved, is poised for a comeback after nearly three decades. While the Nintendo 64 gaming era may not stand the test of time as gracefully as some periods before and after it, there are numerous games from this system that hold a special place in fans’ hearts due to their nostalgic value, even if they aren’t necessarily considered top-tier gaming experiences. With Nintendo Switch Online, many Nintendo enthusiasts have been granted the opportunity to revisit these N64 memories that would otherwise be trapped in the late 90s and early 2000s. However, it’s worth noting that there are still several N64 classics missing from Nintendo Switch Online.
One notable instance of this is Diddy Kong Racing from 1997, a game that seems to have slipped Nintendo’s memory. There have been whispers of theories suggesting that the character might be retired due to issues surrounding Sean “Diddy” Combs, but these are merely speculations. Regrettably, the fact that Diddy Kong Racing has been overlooked hasn’t quelled these rumors.
While the official status quo remains unchanged, there’s been some positive news for enthusiastic gamers eagerly waiting to play again: They now have renewed hopes of returning to the game, either through Nintendo Switch Online, a re-release, or a brand new version.
A Reddit user has brought attention to an intriguing event. In March, a user shared old art from Diddy Kong Racing on a social media platform. Another user expressed their fondness for the game and expressed hope for a sequel. This wouldn’t usually stand out, but the response to this response caught everyone’s attention. Kevin Bayliss, the creator of Diddy Kong, responded with a winking emoji. For those who might not know, Bayliss now works at Playtonic Games, a studio filled with former Rare employees. You guessed it – Rare is the developer behind Diddy Kong Racing!
Could there be some truth to this post? It’s hard to tell for certain, but let’s entertain the idea that there might be. If this post contains any valid information, it could potentially indicate that Playtonic may be collaborating with Nintendo on a project related to Diddy Kong Racing. Alternatively, it could hint at a spiritual successor using Yooka-Laylee as the intellectual property being developed. Lastly, it’s possible that Bayliss has picked up some rumors about something in development involving Diddy Kong Racing, which could be a Switch Online release, remaster, or sequel. However, these are all speculative ideas at this point.
If you’re new to Diddy Kong Racing, it was initially launched in 1997, exclusively for the N64 by Rare and Nintendo. This game scored an impressive 89 on Metacritic, making it one of the top-rated games of its year. It also managed to sell close to five million copies, placing it as the 8th best-selling N64 game ever. However, despite its popularity, a sequel was never produced. A follow-up was being developed for the GameCube, but unfortunately, the project was terminated in 2002, just a month before Microsoft purchased the studio. In essence, the sequel didn’t happen due to this event. Nevertheless, there was a remake on the Nintendo DS in 2007. Since then, fans of the series have been waiting for more content, but unfortunately, nothing new has emerged.
