As someone who has been following Dragon Ball since its inception, I have to say that the prospect of a new Dragon Ball Super movie is both exhilarating and daunting. On one hand, I am thrilled at the possibility of seeing more adventures of Goku, Vegeta, and the rest of the Z-Warriors. On the other hand, the loss of Akira Toriyama leaves a void that may be difficult to fill.
The popular series, Dragon Ball, is experiencing a significant transformation as it marks its 40th anniversary, sparking speculation about the possible return of Dragon Ball Super in the form of a future movie. At present, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero stands as the latest tale for the Dragon Ball Super franchise, appearing in both its anime and manga versions. However, following the demise of original creator Akira Toriyama, the franchise has been on an open-ended break. In the interim, fans have been introduced to a fresh Dragon Ball anime series titled Dragon Ball Daima, featuring a never-before-seen storyline.
Despite the ongoing prosperity of “Dragon Ball Daima,” there remains a strong yearning among fans for a revival of “Dragon Ball Super” in some form of future anime project. A recent financial report from Toei Animation, as noticed by @DragonBall09876 on X, hints that they might be releasing two new films within the 2026 fiscal year (from Spring 2025 to Spring 2026). It’s possible that one of these movies could be a new “Dragon Ball” film, or perhaps even a new “Dragon Ball Super” movie, but at this stage it seems more wishful thinking than a certainty.
Is Dragon Ball Super Coming Back?
Ever since “Dragon Ball Super” TV anime concluded in 2018, fans have been eager for its continuation. However, we’ve had the story progress through new manga chapters and two feature films instead. Reviving “Dragon Ball Super” with a fresh movie isn’t an outlandish thought. Although fans might prefer seeing the manga’s narrative unfold, there’s a chance it could branch off into a completely new tale, similar to the first two movies. However, if the series makes a comeback with new tales, it’s more probable that we’ll witness it in manga form initially.
The artist behind Dragon Ball Super, Toyotaro, has hinted at the possibility of a manga continuation after the passing of Toriyama, with Black Frieza’s debut as a significant upcoming adversary for Goku and Vegeta in future battles. Recent events in Dragon Ball Daima are also linking this new anime to the multiverse of Dragon Ball Super, suggesting a potential return for the franchise. However, if we’re expecting a Dragon Ball film, it might be set in the timeline created by Dragon Ball Daima instead.
What Will the Next Dragon Ball Movie Look Like?
If Toei Animation is planning a new Dragon Ball movie, it’s possible that the storyline will continue from where Dragon Ball Daima left off. This upcoming series takes place approximately one year after the Majin Buu arc and before the Battle of Gods events. This timeframe offers numerous opportunities for fresh stories as it delves into the unexplored Demon Realm. Each episode of this new animation has been expanding the franchise significantly, altering fans’ perspectives on the Buu arc forever. Therefore, it seems ripe for an in-depth look at the period between Daima and Super.
The creators of Dragon Ball have shown their intention to carry on with anime releases after Dragon Ball Daima concluded, and a fresh movie aligns perfectly with this strategy. However, Toei Animation manages several other prominent franchises too, which could also be candidates for a new film project. Although Dragon Ball is currently popular among fans, it’s not the only successful franchise they possess that could be highlighted in this financial report.
In the past, series such as One Piece, Digimon, Sailor Moon, Precure, and others have had theatrical feature film releases, so it’s possible that any one of them could receive a new movie before Dragon Ball. However, while it’s not impossible for there to be a new Dragon Ball film in development, it might be more challenging for it to be a new Dragon Ball Super project, given the significant changes being made with the Dragon Ball Daima rebranding. This rebrand seems to be setting the stage for upcoming original anime releases, so it’s likely that any new projects will focus on this revamped identity before moving onto other titles like Dragon Ball Super.
If fortune favors us, we might witness fresh Dragon Ball Super manga chapters coinciding with a movie inspired by Dragon Ball Daimao gracing theater screens at approximately the same time. At this point, it’s hard to predict whether these plans are solid or not, but with Jump Festa 2025 drawing near in just a few days, things might take an exciting turn.
