Beware! The final episode of Season 1 from the series “Grosse Pointe Garden Society,” titled “Bad Seeds” is out now. You can watch it on Peacock, only if you have a subscription.
The inaugural, humorous yet intricate season of “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” wrapped up on NBC’s spring 2025 TV lineup, leaving viewers uncertain whether it would be renewed like the “One Chicago” series or cancelled like “Suits LA”, as the network chose not to disclose its fate. The finale, titled “Bad Seeds”, revealed that Alice and her team had made a mistake when they thought they’d solved who murdered Molly, as they discovered that the gun belonged to Patty instead.
As Alice prepared a bag for an emotionally charged journey, the main four characters were preoccupied with finding a solution to dispose of Keith’s body and handling the private investigator who uncovered their secret. The season 1 finale ended with several unanswered questions in the present narrative, yet it transitioned to a flash-forward showing a Halloween party that appeared to go awry for Brett, Catherine, and Birdie much like the gala did.
It’s fortunate that I had discussions with showrunners Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs during Season 1 about the possibility of a second season, and their remarks carry more weight now as we await word on the fate of GPGS.
What About Season 2?
Intriguingly, the central enigma of GPGS‘s inaugural season revolved around uncovering the identity of “Quiche.” As more clues surfaced about the unfortunate demise of this individual, it was a shocking revelation to discover that Quiche was none other than Keith. His untimely end occurred while he was desperately trying to prevent a cherished quilt from being shredded in a woodchipper – quite an unexpected and darkly comical turn of events! To add another layer of intrigue, the series further unveiled an unexpected twist: it was Marilyn, not Patty, who took Molly’s life.
Has there been any confirmation about a Season 2 since the main enigma from Season 1 has been resolved? I put this inquiry to the co-showrunners, who have worked together on “Good Girls” before “Grosse Pointe”. Jenna Bans, one of them, replied:
We anticipate [the future development of events]. I believe we have a clear idea of what it might entail by the end of this season… What intrigues us is that all the ensuing events stem from the Keith/Quiche’s death. It’s not as if a completely new character meets an untimely end or something similar. Instead, it’s the consequences arising from their decision to conceal this murder that create further complications.
To GPGS fans, this development might be pleasing, but it’s important to acknowledge that there hasn’t been a renewal yet. It’s significant to point out that Bans dismissed the notion that the show was intentionally placed to fail on Friday nights. Instead, Bill Krebs clarified their aim was to increase viewership on Peacock, and they even envisioned it potentially becoming an original series on the platform.

As I eagerly await news about the future of “Grosse Pointe Garden Society,” it’s not inconceivable that we might see a shift from NBC to Peacock. After all, much like how “Law & Order: Organized Crime” Season 5 made its way over, this streaming platform seems like an ideal fit for the show, given its potential for more explicit language. Fingers crossed!

The “Tragic” Evolution Of Season 1
As a movie critic, I must admit that the nail-biting climax at the end of Season 1 of “Grosse Pointe Garden Society” left me on the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating the resolution. However, the uncertainty over whether or not we’d get a second season to tie up loose ends made it difficult to fully appreciate the suspense. The final scene, unfolding in the present, depicted Alice struggling to confess her crime to a police officer, with Joel trying to intervene without tipping off any of his fellow officers. It was a tense and gripping ending, but I can’t help but wonder how much more satisfying it would have been if I knew there was more story to come.
Initially, we didn’t get to witness or learn whether Joel managed the task. Instead, the scene shifted ahead to a Halloween garden party, where a pumpkin foreshadowed “Next Season.” Alice was absent, but Birdie, Brett, and Catherine were engaged in a conversation about trust with an individual who was disguised in a large duck costume, completely hiding their identity.
The suspenseful conclusion, or several such endings, echoed the producers’ remarks about the various elements that contributed to the tantalizing sneak peek of “what’s next” without a definite promise of another season. They stated:
- Bill Krebs: “We like the simplicity of how the whole season evolved, which will then evolve in hopefully multiple seasons, which is it all started with Alice wondering what happened to her dog, and had she not gone on that journey, none of these journeys would have branched out from that, and we they never would have ended up on that fateful night.”
- Jenna Bans: “And had Catherine not told her that that bullet came from that gun, it wouldn’t have happened. And had Patty not loved that quilt, it wouldn’t have happened. It was all a tragic domino effect.”
If GPGS only lasts one season due to a tragic turn of events, that’s certainly accurate. Krebs further explained that the chain of unfortunate incidents might have been prevented if the main characters hadn’t formed their friendship, hadn’t played the prank with the quilt, and hadn’t found themselves near the woodchipper. Bans added that perhaps Connor wouldn’t have provoked Brett, which could have prevented Brett from putting the pickaxe back in its original place.
According to Jenna Bans, they aimed for everything to fall into place when looking back, and hopefully fans understand that they’ve given it careful consideration. Bill Krebs then emphasized the extensive efforts they undertook to ensure that everything was coherent in the end.
Due to the fast-paced nature of our production, where each episode was shot before it was written, we barely had a fortnight’s lead time. This meant that we needed to plan our plotlines in advance, as once an episode was filmed, we couldn’t go back and make changes or reshoot. To ensure the storyline made sense and didn’t feel hasty, we had extensive timeline boards in our office and writers room, constantly adjusting and rearranging elements to fit together coherently. We aimed to avoid any appearance of cheapness in our work.
Regarding the future of Grosse Pointe Garden Society, I can only express optimism. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a possible Season 2 renewal by NBC or news that it might transition to streaming and become an original on Peacock. Currently, NBC has scheduled On Brand with Jimmy Fallon, a new competition series hosted by the host of The Tonight Show, in the 8 p.m. ET time slot on Fridays during the fall. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the chances for more GPGS are diminished.
As a cinephile, I’ve got some exciting news! If you haven’t had enough of your favorite shows from the first season, here’s your chance to revisit them all! With a Peacock subscription, you can stream the full first season anytime you want. Since summer vacation is approaching and major networks are taking a break, scripted broadcast options will be scarce for a while. So, make the most of this moment and catch up on some amazing TV shows you might have missed!
