One of the beloved romances depicted in the animated series “Justice League Unlimited” is being developed further in the comic books. The character John Stewart, who gained widespread recognition as the main Green Lantern on “Justice League,” was initially introduced to a new fanbase through the animated series. This audience soon became enamored with John’s burgeoning romance with Hawkwoman (Shayera Hol of Thanagar), which was prominently featured in the show. Although they had previously fought together on the Justice League in the comics, a newly launched series seems to be taking cues from the animated show to reexplore John Stewart and Shayera’s relationship with a fresh perspective. [SPOILER ALERT: The following paragraph contains spoilers for Green Lantern Corps #2]
In the comics, it appears that the latest series is delving deeper into John Stewart and Shayera’s relationship, possibly taking inspiration from the animated show to offer a new perspective on their bond. [SPOILER: In Green Lantern Corps #2, we see John and Shayera sharing an intimate moment, hinting at the rekindling of their romance.]
In issue #2 of Green Lantern Corps, the story is penned by Morgan Hampton, Jeremy Adams, Fernando Pasarin, Oclair Albert, Arif Prianto, and Dave Sharpe. The narrative opens with John Stewart commanding a group of Green Lanterns to the remnants of Thanagar, a planet devastated during the Green Lantern: Civil Corps Saga. Fortunately, Shayera was in the Altar System when Thanagar was destroyed, but upon their arrival, they discover that half of the planet is mysteriously absent. It appears that former leader of the United Planets, Thaaros, managed to unleash the Red Rage from the living Green Lantern planet Mogo, which in turn caused the colossal Green Lantern to lash out against Thanagar.
In simpler terms, Atrocitus along with his Red Lanterns are digging a tunnel in Thanagar. Meanwhile, Kilowog and Razer monitor the Red Lantern commander, while John Stewart and Hawkwoman secretly enter Atrocitus’ spaceship. Just as they’re about to be caught, Hawkwoman quickly shoves John into a storage room, causing an escalation of romantic tension between them to reach its peak.
John Stewart and Hawkwoman’s Justice League romance heads to the comics
As a movie enthusiast, I’d put it like this: In the dimly lit storage bay, I find myself standing toe-to-toe with Shayera, also known as Hawkwoman. The comic page seems to whisper instead of speak, capturing our silent moment chest to chest. My gaze strays from her eyes towards a spot above her head, evading that intense connection for some reason. Yet, it’s clear that Shayera is returning my gaze firmly, her unwavering stare piercing through the silence between us.
In the end, they exit the room and return to their tasks. As for Atrocitus, he’s attempting a daring heist, trying to pilfer a colossal amount of Nth metal hidden within Thanagar. When John Stewart and Hawkwoman manage to gain access to the engine room on Atrocitus’ vessel, they stumble upon Red Lantern Zilius Zox serving as an energy source. The climactic confrontation between John Stewart, Hawkwoman, and Atrocitus unfolds, and by the end of Green Lantern Corps #2, an Nth metal orb drifts away from Thanagar.
Are John Stewart and Hawkwoman going to become a couple?
In the animated series “Justice League Unlimited,” although John Stewart and Hawkwoman weren’t officially declared a couple, hints were dropped suggesting they could have become one if the show continued. An example is when John Stewart was propelled into the future, where he fought alongside Batman Beyond and the Justice League Beyond. Among this future team, Warhawk, the son of John Stewart and Shayera Hol, is a member. This implies that at some point in the future, these two Justice League members would have been romantically involved, leading to the birth of Rex Stewart.
In Justice League Unlimited, an attempt was made to create a romantic connection between John Stewart and Vixen, introducing a love triangle for more dramatic tension. However, John Stewart’s relationship with Shayera ultimately prevailed, hinting at their predestined romance. It’s yet unclear if the comic books follow this pattern or not. War can sometimes lead to unexpected alliances, so any romantic sparks could be attributed to the intensity of warfare.
If you’re eager for more of John Stewart, don’t miss the forthcoming “Lanterns” series airing on HBO. In this production, Aaron Pierre takes on the role of John Stewart, while Kyle Chandler brings Hal Jordan to life.
