As an ardent fan, I’m thrilled to share that Donnie Yen will rejoin the John Wick universe next year, specifically in the Caine-focused spin-off from John Wick: Chapter 4. However, it’s important to note that the iconic character of Baba Yaga won’t be making an appearance. In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter about From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, director Chad Stahelski clarified that the Caine spin-off won’t feature the John Wick character. Instead, it will be all about Donnie Yen, and it pays homage to classic kung fu movies. Stahelski even compared it to John Wick 1 being about Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin, explaining that this spin-off is more about Chow Yun-fat, John Woo, and Wong Kar-wai, which he believes places it in a unique sub-genre within our beloved action cinema.
In the “John Wick” series, Yen Caine was initially introduced as an old friend of John’s who was manipulated by the powerful High Table member Marquis Vincent de Gramont to chase down John. The safety of Caine’s daughter was held hostage to compel him. Throughout “John Wick: Chapter 4,” the visually impaired kung fu master and swordsman found himself in a difficult position, opposing John while also forming a new enemy in Shimazu Akira. In the closing scene of the film, Akira vowed revenge against Caine for killing her father, Shimazu Koji, during his mission to reach the Baba Yaga. Given this plot development, it’s likely that a spin-off featuring Caine will focus on their eventual showdown.
Fans of the John Wick franchise might experience mixed feelings upon hearing that Chad Stahelski’s confirmation about Yen directing a Caine spin-off means Keanu Reeves as John Wick won’t be featured. While fans are excited to see Reeves reprise his role in the recently released Ballerina, early reviews have been positive for both the movie and Ana de Armas’ portrayal of Eve Macarro, the lethal protagonist of the spin-off. This suggests that having John Wick in a spin-off doesn’t necessarily overshadow the main character, leading some fans to feel a bit let down that Caine and John won’t reunite on screen.
In a different perspective, John’s appearance in “Ballerina,” particularly since the film is titled “From the World of John Wick“, seems to serve partly as a marketing strategy for the spin-off focusing on Eve Macarro, a character from the John Wick series who will be making her debut in this spin-off. On the other hand, Ian McShane already left a lasting impact in “John Wick: Chapter 4,” which explains why he is more prepared to lead his own spin-off compared to the relatively unknown Eve. Moreover, Chad Stahelski’s description of McShane’s spin-off as an “ode to kung fu movies” implies that its self-contained nature could make it more appealing to audiences, especially considering Yen’s extensive background in martial arts films.
Donnie Yen, a veteran Hong Kong action star, has seen his global fame skyrocket in recent times. His career took off in Hong Kong with acclaimed kung fu films like “Drunken Tai Chi,” “In the Line of Duty IV,” “Once Upon a Time in China II,” and “Iron Monkey.” In the early 2000s, Yen gained even more recognition with the successes of “Hero,” “Sha Po Lang,” and “Flash Point.” He then reached unprecedented heights portraying Bruce Lee’s mentor in the “Ip Man” series. Since then, Yen has led many of Hong Kong’s top martial arts movie productions and is increasingly venturing into Hollywood, appearing in films such as “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “xXx: Return of Xander Cage,” and most recently, “John Wick: Chapter 4.
Overall, the John Wick universe is growing with fresh characters and spin-offs dominating the spotlight, while Baba Yaga appears in side-stories where he fits perfectly as a supporting character. Following the electrifying on-screen partnership between Keanu Reeves’ John Wick and Donnie Yen’s Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4, fans may wish for one more joint appearance by these action movie stars. Yet, with Donnie Yen’s impressive portrayal of Caine previously and the anticipation of a powerful kung fu film set within the John Wick universe, it is expected that Caine’s next appearance will be just as significant as his initial one.
From the World of John Wick: Ballerina is now playing in theaters.
