As a dedicated follower of Lucas Bravo and his captivating portrayal of Gabriel in Emily in Paris, I must admit his recent remarks about feeling disconnected from the character he brought to life have left me a bit heartbroken. Having witnessed his growth from a charming, enigmatic chef in season one to a character that seems lost and manipulated, I can’t help but share his sentiments of disappointment.
Lucas Bravo might catch the next flight out of Paris.
In fact, the actor who portrays Gabriel on the show “Emily in Paris” confessed that he’s experienced a decreased connection with the Michelin-starred chef’s character, since the series began.
In a recent interview with IndieWire (October 29), Lucas admitted, “The ‘sexy chef’ was deeply connected to me during Season 1, but we drifted further apart as the seasons progressed due to the decisions he made and the paths they chose for him. I’ve never felt so disconnected from his character.
And while the 36-year-old felt himself drawn to the character as it was written in season one, he feels his personality has jumped the shark.
Lucas added, ‘They kept him somewhat detached from his environment, constantly leaving him at a disadvantage, misunderstood, out of touch with what was going on around him, and easily influenced by others.’
Because of the shifts in his personality, Lucas mentioned that working on the show Emily in Paris has stopped being enjoyable for him.
He clarified that it was painful to either watch or imagine the character he adores, who has given him so many enjoyable moments, gradually becoming mashed avocado. Clearly, their bond has weakened.
Since his Netflix show contract ended in Season 4, Lucas questioned if he’d consider coming back, given that the series recently got renewed just last month.
He expressed that despite his efforts over multiple seasons to add depth and subtleties to the character, there was limited flexibility on set. He stated that they couldn’t alter a single word or emotion, which left him pondering about his participation in Season 5. He shared a strong desire to see if Gabriel returns to his lively, witty, playful persona once again.
But Lucas isn’t holding his breath, as he considered other potential plot changes in the series that were ultimately reigned back in by showrunner Darren Star.
He suggested that they might be clinging tightly to an element that contributed significantly to their success, which they couldn’t quantify, hence their reluctance to alter the formula and maintain its originality. In other words, anything that could potentially deviate from the norm is handled with great care. It’s like handling many soufflés. No, it’s not a pregnancy or a trip to Rome, but rather situations that are similar in nature. There seems to be a conscious avoidance of risk.
Lucas’ candid comments come shortly after he lauded Darren for fighting for him to play the part of Gabriel, telling People in September that the showrunner had known he “was the part from the beginning.”
And the Netflix actor acknowledged his more recent comments toward the series were a bit harsh.
He mentioned to IndieWire that he may not appear nice or thankful, but when one cares deeply about something, they strive for its best form. Admittedly, I’ve been upset with the character development trajectory. However, we’ll see what happens. The show still has more to unfold; it isn’t finished yet.
