Former AEW Champion Malakai Black could be on his way out of AEW.
Since the AEW Full Gear event in November, the Black leader’s wrestling career has taken a pause alongside Brody King. They challenged for the AEW World Tag Team Championship, which is currently held by Private Party. However, unlike other members of his group, he hasn’t been seen on TV recently. Meanwhile, Buddy Matthews and Will Ospreay engaged in a fierce battle last night on AEW Dynamite, with Ospreay emerging victorious. As per Fightful Select, there is speculation within AEW that he has completed his contractual duties with the company.
The topic of Black’s contract with AEW has been a subject of discussion. Contrary to what was suggested earlier, Black’s contract doesn’t end in 2027. Instead, after the year 2025, Black had the option to renew his contract with AEW, and it appears they chose not to re-sign him. It’s important to mention that as of now, Black is still included on the AEW roster page, which gets updated when talent join or leave the company.
On social media and in November, there was much discussion about his AEW status, with many assuming he was retiring. However, this isn’t the first time he’s clarified the situation, but his tone suggested frustration. “Once more we find ourselves short a match, and again everyone is saying ‘he’s retiring — he’s retiring because of his injury.’ I’m not injured, nor am I retiring, nor am I leaving,” Black expressed on Instagram.
I find myself encountering this issue in almost every game, and it seems like you keep bringing up the same points, which then don’t materialize and people still seem to believe it. I haven’t had a back injury for over three years now. When I did post about it, it was only after the incident had occurred. If you had read my post, you would have understood that, rather than relying on other people’s interpretations of it. I’m in good health, and I’ve been this way for quite some time. I would be very grateful if such discussions could cease, man. If I decide to retire, it will be my decision and not based on a promo by Adam [Cole] thanking me for the match because that’s all it was.
If it seems he’s about to leave AEW, WWE might extend a job offer to him again. Previously, there was significant interest outside of AEW for him, and he isn’t the only AEW star to make such a move. The exodus started with Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 39, but since then, WWE has also signed Jade Cargill and Penta. He initially joined WWE back in 2016 and stayed until 2020. His AEW debut was on Dynamite in 2021, with Rhodes being his primary target.
