There’s a lot of chatter on social platforms suggesting that Harrison Ford’s character as Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World might not have many scenes, possibly less than five minutes, in the highly-anticipated Marvel movie. If accurate, this could be seen as a misleading tactic by Marvel Studios, given how they’ve heavily promoted the Red Hulk in virtually all trailers, ads, and posters. However, it’s important to note that these are just rumors at this point, not confirmed facts.
The claim was shared to X by the movie news account We Love Physical Media.
The Red Hulk has Less than 5 Minutes of Screen time

In the marketing strategy for the film, Ford’s characterization of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who turns into Red Hulk, has been a significant highlight. Posters featuring Red Hulk squaring off against Sam Wilson’s Captain America and action-packed teasers have built anticipation that Ross’s transformation will be crucial to the plot. However, if his screen time is minimal, some fans might feel deceived by the studio, an issue often raised in discussions about Marvel’s promotional techniques in recent times.
Given that the running time of the movie is 118 minutes, it’s interesting to note that even though the Red Hulk appears in almost all promotional materials (approximately 100%), he will actually be featured for a mere 4.2% of the film’s duration.
When evaluating this assertion, it’s challenging to find reasons to contradict it. So far, we’ve only witnessed Red Hulk in one scene: beginning with Ford’s transformation on a presidential stage and concluding with a fierce fight against Sam Wilson under cherry blossom trees in Washington D.C. This limited exposure suggests that the Red Hulk might not have been a persistent threat throughout the movie, but instead, could be a surprising plot twist added at the end of the film for dramatic effect.
Marvel has demonstrated a readiness to deceive its audience when necessary, as seen in the promotional trailers for “The Marvels.” Contrary to appearances, lines originally spoken by Josh Brolin as Thanos were used, despite the character not appearing at all in the final film.
A Film Already Mired in Controversy
Rumors about The Red Hulk surface as Brave New World grapples with escalating difficulties. The film is believed to have a colossal production budget, ranging from $350 million to $375 million, excluding marketing costs. With these promotional expenses factored in, the movie must earn close to $1 billion globally just to break even – an intimidating challenge considering current box office estimates.
Initial sales figures for the upcoming release have been characterized as lackluster, performing just 1.4 times better than the disappointing box office performance of The Marvels, which ultimately managed to rake in only $206 million worldwide. To make matters worse, it seems that Brave New World‘s pre-release buzz is roughly on a par with The Eternals – another Marvel production that fell short of expectations and earned a total of $402 million globally on a budget of $236 million.
Production Problems and Audience Fatigue
According to sources, the novel “Brave New World” went through numerous revisions and retakes, which substantially boosted its initial high budget. A large part of these changes centered around integrating Giancarlo Esposito’s character, Sidewnder, into the storyline.
Additionally, Marvel grapples with a decrease in excitement among its original fanbase. The character Sam Wilson, portrayed by Anthony Mackie and who assumed the role of Captain America in Disney+’s “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” has found it challenging to match the cultural impact that Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers had previously achieved.
As a defender, I acknowledge the criticism that Disney+ series have faced for seemingly placing identity politics ahead of compelling narratives. However, it’s crucial to remember that each production aims to tell unique stories from diverse perspectives, including those that challenge traditional norms. Brave New World, in particular, carries the weight of these lingering perceptions, but I believe it offers a fresh and thought-provoking take on its source material.
In its current state of recovery, Marvel’s future seems to hinge on the success or failure of the upcoming film “Brave New World”. With a substantial budget, waning fan enthusiasm, and recent concerns about deceptive advertising, the risks associated with this project are immense. If reports about Red Hulk having minimal screen time turn out to be accurate, it could solidify “Brave New World” as another significant blunder in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s downward trend.
