The remarkable family known as the Fantastic Four is all set to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe in July with their debut film titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“. Following the release of the film’s first trailer and details shared during Marvel’s presentation at CinemaCon, fans have been eagerly discussing what to expect from the movie and its connection to the MCU. There are whispers that the team might inhabit the same Earth as the X-Men in “The Marvels“, potentially leading to a confrontation with the Avengers in “Avengers: Doomsday“. However, some fans are delving deeper into Marvel Comics’ history, speculating about Sue Storm’s pregnancy in “First Steps” and the upcoming arrival of Franklin Richards.
In 1968, the character Franklin Richards made his debut, eventually exhibiting extraordinary abilities that catapulted him to the highest echelons of power among Marvel characters. If he were to appear in the movie, it might pique Galactus’ interest and bring him to our old Earth. Additionally, Franklin could be instrumental in the formation of Battleworld during the “Secret Wars”. However, his presence might also stir up a contentious narrative for Marvel enthusiasts, potentially similar to the “Heroes Reborn” storyline.
What is Heroes Reborn?
Prior to NBC’s (unrelated) revival of its Heroes TV series under the same name, Marvel had already launched a comic book series named Heroes Reborn in 1996. This initiative was led by Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld and lasted for a year. The plot revolved around Marvel superheroes, such as the Avengers and Fantastic Four, being sacrificed to defeat Onslaught. Instead of dying, these heroes were transported to another realm by Franklin Richards. During this time, classic stories and origins were retold and reimagined with Lee and Liefeld at the helm. The sales for the rebooted titles increased, but the concept began to unravel after Liefeld was removed from the project and Lee took over the entire creation. It concluded after twelve issues, leading to Heroes Return and their reintegration into the main Marvel Universe.
A significant aspect of the series Heroes Reborn involves the ominous appearance of Galactus as a formidable adversary for all heroes. The storyline, reintroduced in the revamped titles, primarily focuses on the approaching arrival of this universe-devouring entity, linking Marvel’s beloved characters to this villain. The climax unfolds across a four-issue battle reminiscent of The Fantastic Four, specifically First Steps and its confrontation with Galactus. In the final crossover event, Doctor Doom manipulates time travel to go back to before Galactus’ arrival on Earth, aiming to prevent his destructive rampage. However, each attempt to stop him ends in failure, resulting in several key characters meeting their demise until ultimately, Galactus is slain by the Silver Surfer in the last issue.
It’s improbable that all the superheroes appearing in the crossover will materialize, but certain plot points align with the speculated storyline for “First Steps”. The most popular theory suggests Galactus manages to consume the retro-futuristic Earth in “First Steps”, paving the way for Franklin Richards to aid his kin and migrate to the primary timeline. It’s worth noting that this version of Galactus is consistent across all universes, so the destruction of this planet and the recurring conflicts between alternate realities could draw him into the main Marvel Universe – often referred to as the “sacred” timeline.
How Could Heroes Reborn Play Out In the MCU?
First Steps” draws inspiration from the late ’90s “Heroes Reborn” crossover event, what might we anticipate?
It’s quite possible that Franklin Richards will showcase his abilities, possibly confronting Galactus, as a last-ditch effort to protect an alternate Earth. Connecting this scenario with the concept of incursions or showing him assisting his family in escaping impending destruction would strengthen the narrative. If predictions hold true, Franklin Richards may step into the role previously held by Molecule Man in the MCU. In a revised version of the “Secret Wars” storyline, Doom might employ Franklin’s powers to construct Battleworld and maintain order.
As we get nearer to the movie’s release in July, we’ll stay alert and attentive. In the meantime, what are your thoughts about Franklin Richards’ probable part in the MCU from here on out? If Heroes Reborn were introduced right away, could it potentially harm the entire franchise? Share your opinions in the comments below.
