As a longtime PlayStation fan and follower of the gaming industry, I must admit that the recent developments surrounding Marvel’s Wolverine at Insomniac Games have left me with a mix of curiosity and concern. The departure of Brian Horton, the game’s creative director, has sparked discussions about potential creative differences within the team, which is always a bit unsettling when it comes to highly-anticipated exclusives like this one.
Enthusiasts of PlayStation are growing more apprehensive about the progress of Marvel’s Wolverine at Insomniac Games. Ever since its unveiling in 2021, Sony has yet to display any fresh glimpses of their PS5-exclusive Wolverine game, either through a new trailer or official gameplay clips. In contrast, the past year has been marked by a significant data leak at Insomniac that led to vast amounts of Marvel’s Wolverine details and footage being released online. More recently, an unusual decision taken by Insomniac is adding to the unease surrounding Wolverine.
As reported earlier by Game File, it was revealed that Marvel’s Wolverine has recently seen its creative director, Brian Horton, depart from the studio. Horton, who was also responsible for Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales at Insomniac, decided to leave his position to take up a new one as director of the Perfect Dark reboot at Xbox. Consequently, Horton’s role at Insomniac is being taken over by Marcus Smith as creative director, and Mike Daly has been appointed as the new game director. Smith and Daly previously worked together as co-directors on Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, a game released in 2021.

Of course, when a director like Horton departs from a project during its early stages, as with Marvel’s Wolverine, it naturally sparks curiosity. However, it’s worth noting that directors changing projects or companies during the development process is not an uncommon occurrence in the industry. Therefore, Horton’s departure from Insomniac may not necessarily indicate any issues concerning Marvel’s Wolverine.
To put it simply, there’s an aspect of the Wolverine report that stands out as slightly troubling. The issue lies in the assertion that Horton departed from Insomniac due to creative disagreements surrounding Marvel’s Wolverine. It appears that Horton and some other key figures at Insomniac may have clashed over the project’s direction, which could suggest a significant dispute that ultimately led to his departure. This part of the report, specifically, is cause for concern, particularly since PlayStation has yet to reveal anything about Wolverine.
The primary doubt that this report has triggered is whether the leak at Insomniac had any influence on Horton’s departure. Was Marvel’s Wolverine experiencing creative difficulties prior to the leak, or did Insomniac decide to modify aspects of the story, scale, and gameplay for Wolverine following the public disclosure of their previous work due to the leak?
No matter what the outcome may be, it’s undeniable that Insomniac has faced a challenging year. Adding to their troubles is the breach of employee personal data in a massive leak, which undoubtedly affected every aspect of the studio and created obstacles for all future projects. However, even though there might have been setbacks with Marvel’s Wolverine during its development in 2024, it’s premature to worry excessively about this PS5-exclusive game at this point.
Based on earlier rumors, it seems Insomniac might not launch Marvel’s Wolverine before 2026 at the very latest. It remains uncertain if the creative adjustments will cause further delays or not, but there’s a chance PlayStation could offer some official sneak peeks of Wolverine in the coming months. For now, fans may find themselves feeling somewhat anxious due to the uncertainties surrounding the Marvel game.
