Is Nancy Leaving Call the Midwife? Fans Are Left in Suspense!

Another week, another Nancy Corrigan no-show on Call the Midwife.

After an overwhelming whirlwind of events during the Christmas special and season 14 opener, where she found love, got engaged, took on a new job that required her to leave Poplar, she has been absent from our screens for the last fortnight, and there’s no sign of her in tonight’s episode either.

Even without the added stress of her uncertain future, that situation alone would be disheartening. The ensemble in this period drama struggles significantly whenever any key actors are absent for extended periods.

As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but feel relieved and excited upon hearing Megan Cusack’s reassurance that she’s sticking around, at least for now. This tidbit of information seems to hint at a potential wave of emotional turmoil in store for our beloved midwife character.

However, though it could deeply sadden Nancy, the viewers might not resonate with the same emotions, leaving them in an awkward predicament, and I’d like to clarify…

Although Cusack’s character was thrilled about getting a job at Netherditch hospital because of the attached house, it was her engagement to drug salesman Roger Noble that eventually convinced her to take up the offer.

He mentioned that the location was directly in the center of his sales territory. He insisted that she should accept it, Nancy. That way, she’d be closer to him, until their wedding day.

It seems that instead of disappearing, she might have quietly moved on to a new position with little ceremony. She plans to come back to east London next spring for her wedding.

If Cusack is not actually departing from Call the Midwife, then it seems almost certain that she’ll rejoin Nonnatus House permanently. This might imply a strengthening of her bond with Roger.

It wouldn’t seem logical for Nancy to move her daughter Collette away from London and then quickly move back, unless perhaps her new relationship ends, causing her to seek the comfort and assistance of her family in Poplar to help her recover.

As a devoted parent and a movie enthusiast, I had my reservations about meeting Roger for a date, considering the potential complications it might bring to my child’s life. But if there was a reason compelling enough to make me reconsider, surely it wouldn’t be due to any coercion.

However difficult it might seem for Nancy, given her past struggles, viewers of the series are reluctant to see her depart from the show.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’ve found immense pleasure in witnessing her transformation into the remarkable woman she is today, with Collette playing a significant role in this journey. Her endearing sweetness intertwined with her dry humor and vibrant spirit has been a breath of fresh air, balancing the sentimental aspects of the show and ensuring it never veers too close to overly sappy territory.

Although many fans support Nancy’s joy, a significant number might prefer her to face hardships, keeping Cusack in place. However, isn’t it unfair, and more importantly, against the essence of the series?

Indeed, it’s possible that the actor was feigning innocence to keep up the suspense, as it seems Nancy is planning to depart.

By the conclusion of Season 14, it seems likely that she will join them, and with Sister Catherine recently joining their group, they certainly won’t lack members.

Regardless of how things turn out with Roger, she may conclude that Netherditch Hospital suits her needs better. Even though she and Collette found happiness at Nonnatus House, it’s possible for them to experience a similar sense of community somewhere else across the country.

But that outcome feels unlikely.

It seems that Roger’s sales territory might shift to east London, which could mean good news for Nancy – she may avoid the heartache, enjoying the benefits of two favorable situations instead.

But that theory also feels tenuous.

Last season, I found myself in a familiar predicament, just like Trixie. My husband, Matthew, was grappling with financial difficulties, causing significant disruption in our lives. In his quest to rebuild, he saw an opportunity to collaborate with an old friend abroad on a business venture.

Though spectators cheered on as Trixie prepared to leave, it was a far cry from happiness within her heart, for she yearned for him deeply. Over the course of many seasons, we, the audience, had invested our time and feelings into their unique bond. Yet, despite the desire to see her departure, we longed for this parting not to be forever etched in stone.

Fortunately, screenwriter Heidi Thomas devised a method to reintegrate the character, while maintaining the integrity of Trixie and Matthew’s union – it’s worth mentioning that viewers appreciated their shared scenes more than just sporadic updates about them.

It also remains to be seen what will happen to Trixie if Olly Rix does not return.

If Matthew chooses to continue living in America, could that lead to the dissolution of their marriage? It’s heartbreaking for Trixie to face another potential loss. However, viewers of the series might find this turn of events acceptable, especially if it means Helen George continues to be part of our television experience.

And the same also goes for Nancy.

As much as viewers support her happiness, there’s no world in which they want to wave goodbye.
